On July 1st, we started the new Fiscal Year for 2023-24 and the funding we implemented from the budget will begin to get allocated. I was honored to help shape this budget as a member of the Budget, Finance, and Innovation Committee.
As Councilmembers, we use this opportunity to advocate for investments in our community. Over the next few months, we will see these investments start to take shape in our own backyard.
From more funding for street improvements like speed humps and protection from streetlight copper wire theft, to major community projects like the Little Italy Plaza and the Watts Happening Cultural Center - I wanted to ensure that the One-Five gets the equitable funding that we deserve.
Here in the district, we will be able to improve our Recreation Centers including Normandale and Harbor City (and we can’t forget the pickleball courts at Peck Park!); secured funding for a Quiet Zone Railroad Crossing Study in Wilmington; and added additional millions to accelerate sidewalk repair requests.
I’m also thrilled to announce that we will be able to fund a dedicated team to beautify the One-Five. This team will go throughout our 5 communities picking up debris and illegal dumping. Stay tuned for more information on our Clean 15 Team!
I am looking forward to seeing these investments make a true difference in uplifting all five communities and improve the One-Five for all of our residents. See below for more One-Five budget wins! |

ADOPT A PET |

Join LA Animal Services and Pedro Pet Pals pet for a very special adoption event on Sunday, July 16 at 395 W. 7th Street, San Pedro, CA 90731, from 11 AM to 2 PM. Also this weekend, LA Animal Shelter will be hosting a Basic Black adoption event on Saturday and Sunday. During the Basic Black weekend, the adoption fees for dogs with primarily black fur will be reduced by $50, which does not include the $20 license fee. Adoption fees for cats and kittens will be waived by the Paula Kent Meehan Pet Care Foundation. |

The Gaffey St. Billboard (at the end of the 110 FWY) will be removed between Monday, July 17th - Wednesday, July 19th.
Crews will be operating from Summerland Pl. and temporary No Parking signs will be posted on the Summerland Pl. cul de sac (see map). Work hours will be from 8 AM to 5 PM and the park will be closed during that time.
One southbound curb lane closure may be required on N. Gaffey St. and pedestrian sidewalk access may also be affected. Local traffic will be allowed to move through on Summerland Pl. and Marshall Ct. |

This weekend we celebrated the 51st Anniversary of the Korean Culture Center at the Korean Friendship Bell. It was a fantastic event with a performance by traditional Korean Fan Dancers, a delicious Bibimbap lunch, and the ringing of the bell 12 times in memory of Rev. Kwang Duk Lee, the founder of the Korean Culture Center. Congratulations on 51 years! |

LANDSCAPING OUR COMMUNITY |

Thanks to the Department of Recreation and Parks for providing much needed landscaping at Leland Park, on Gaffey St. between Elberon Ave. and Channel St. This is a great way to help us clear brush to prevent brush fire from occurring in our parks. We also did some work behind the gates at Sister Cities Plaza on N. Gaffey and O’Farrell St. to make the area safer from brush fire and more beautiful. |

Congratulations to the new graduating class of Community Intervention Workers! Community intervention workers engage with communities where they’re assigned, learn about potential problems and work to de-escalate tense situations and prevent violent incidents from occurring. It was fantastic to be a part of the ceremony at the Watts Labor Community Action Center on Tuesday to celebrate the graduation of 84 new interventionists! |

The Construction Services Division has been working to install a new sidewalk on the 1400 block of E. 101st St. We’re working throughout the One-Five to make our sidewalks safer and more accessible for everyone! |

This week the Bureau of Street Services worked to trim a tree on Fries Ave near Sandinson St. Its branches were hanging so low that the street sweeper was unable to clean the location. We’re glad to report that it has been completed! |
