COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
The Life of Jimmy Weldon
For this week's community spotlight, we would like to commemorate the incredible life of United States Army Sergeant Jimmy Weldon. Jimmy Weldon was a World War II veteran who served under the command of U.S. General George S. Patton in his Third Army where he participated in legendary moments like as the liberation of Western France in Normandy (D-Day), the Battle of the Bulge, and the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp. He later became known for being the voice of Yakky Doodle in The Yogi Bear Show. He was a lifetime member of Wings Over Wendys, a local organization that provides fellowship for veterans and was renowned throughout the United States for his unique and stirring rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance which is included in the video above.
Jimmy Weldon was deeply involved with the veteran community in Los Angeles and Council District 12. He was a larger-than-life personality and his presence will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.
