Ballona Wetlands Progress Report
It's been a journey, but I'm thrilled to report big progress at the Ballona Wetlands. We're ahead of schedule, the RV encampment is nearly gone, and the rehabilitation work along Jefferson Trail is already underway. It will likely take several more months to deliver all of our planned improvements, so we will keep you updated as the work progresses.

Throughout this effort, we offered interim housing and other services to nearly 60 encampments along Jefferson Boulevard. Several people accepted offers and some are still working with LAHSA. For those who declined, our office and LAHSA will continue outreach and engagement efforts.

Our partners at Friends of the Ballona Wetlands are assessing the environmental damage, including soil sampling, structural repairs, litter and hazardous waste removal, and vegetation restoration. The Ballona Wetlands Conservancy is assisting with an extensive fence rebuild that was once used to keep people from walking in the most sensitive areas of the wetlands. Our office will continue to assist with CARE+ and street sweeping to remove debris and litter and provide general maintenance and support to the area.

Finally, my thanks to all of the community partners and advocates who fought so hard to get this done, and to our City and LAHSA partners who helped deliver the results. This work is extremely challenging, but together, we will continue our efforts to urgently address homelessness and protect our sensitive environmental areas.

 Public Safety At Oceanfront Walk

We continue to focus public safety efforts on the Venice Boardwalk, a vital city asset for recreation and tourism. Our partnership with LAPD, Park Rangers, LASAN, and service providers includes additional officers focused on patrol and narcotics enforcement, amplified homeless outreach, and consistent CARE+ operations. We are all aware of the remaining challenges at the beach, but we will continue our work to create and maintain a safe and welcoming space for everyone at LA's most famous beach.

Supporting Our Police Officers

I want to thank Mayor Karen Bass, the police union, and city negotiators for reaching a tentative agreement that supports our police officers by boosting recruitment and retention. With current LAPD staffing at an all-time low, this contract is vital. Over the past four years, we lost nearly 1,000 officers, or about 10% of sworn staff. Unfortunately, we all feel the effects of reduced police staffing. I've persistently championed public safety, and this new deal takes a significant step toward replenishing our ranks and enhancing safety across the City.

National Night Out

We had an incredibly successful National Night Out, with hundreds of community members joining us to meet and thank our public safety partners, discuss local issues, and build connections. It was great to have the chance to say "hi" to so many of you!

Wildfire Hazard Mitigation Working Group

CD11 continues to make significant strides in our community's wildfire preparedness. At our most recent working group meeting, we brought together representatives from twelve City departments involved in wildfire mitigation and response, along with counterparts from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Our discussions focused on strategies to fortify our at-risk hillside and canyon communities against wildfire threats.

Standing Up Against Human Trafficking

On Friday, I introduced a resolution calling on the City Council to support SB-14, a bipartisan state bill that would classify human trafficking of a minor as a serious felony, counting toward the Three Strikes Law. This resolution sends a clear message: child trafficking is a horrific industry that must be eradicated. Personally, I will always stand with the victims and work tirelessly to support measures that combat this abhorrent practice.

Join us for our next Venice Bridge Home community meeting on Thursday, August 24, from 5-6 PM. This is an opportunity for community members to come together and stay informed. RSVP here https://forms.gle/f2YpF4x8wsm3JQqS6.

Our Home Run Little League

Congratulations to the phenomenal Del Rey American Little League 10U All Stars, who achieved an incredible 3rd place finish in the 2023 SoCal State Tournament! The team advanced further than any 10U team in the League's' 69 year history and outperformed all other teams from both the City and County of Los Angeles. What a great job by our Westchester hometown heroes, their coaches, and dedicated parents!
Park's Pick
This week's Park's Pick, Flowers by Felicia in Playa del Rey, highlights the importance of supporting small businesses. With 25 years of service, they've offered the community more than just floral arrangements and home gifts; they're a testament to the vitality and charm that small businesses bring to our neighborhoods.
Adopt-A-Pet
Daisy, a friendly and relaxed 4-year-old gal weighing 45 pounds, is eagerly waiting for her forever home. She loves attention and could be the perfect addition to your family. You can meet Daisy at our Chesterfield Square Animal Services Center.
