We’ve had a terribly hard week in the One-Five, from Wilmington to Watts to San Pedro, we’ve experienced senseless acts of violence in our communities. My heart breaks for those who have been impacted by these horrific events and my prayers are with you.

But we also saw the power of community. We stood together in grief, prayed together, called for justice, and stood shoulder to shoulder in strength. We showed the resilience of our community, giving each other space to grieve, and working together to heal and move forward.

Sometimes finding time and healthy ways to heal is very difficult. We don’t often prioritize it and try to push through it. But that’s what makes our district so special, we care and support each other in the good and the tough times. Being there for each other shows the love that we have, not just for our family and immediate neighborhoods, but for each other. And when we come together to share our experiences, fears, and feelings - we realize that we are not alone in this. That’s what makes our community so strong.

CLEAN 15 HIGHLIGHTS

Check out these before and afters of our Clean 15 Team’s work! This week, we’re highlighting the team’s hard work helping clean up piles of illegal dumping in Wilmington and the Gateway! Please report illegal dumping to MyLA311, but you can also report requests to our district offices.

I BUILD THE TOWER SCREENING

From Watts to the Harbor we met at the Warner Grand Theatre on Sunday to watch 'I Build The Tower’ - the story of Italian Immigrant Simon Rodia who single handedly built the Watts Towers. It was great to be with our neighbors watching a documentary of the making of one of the most important landmarks in the district. Thank you to Stephanie Mardesich and the LA Harbor International Film Festival for bringing us together to watch One-Five history on the big screen!

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

We had great National Night Out events throughout the One-Five! From Watts through the Gateway and Harbor City to Wilmington and San Pedro, we enjoyed spending time in our local parks community building, playing games, eating ice cream and having fun with our neighbors and public safety officers.

LA ZOO TEEN COUNCIL

The L.A. Zoo Teen Council for Conservation program is intended to provide young Angelenos with direct engagement and learning experiences to benefit their educational paths and life journeys. The Zoo Department will offer an educational stipend of $300 per month over 9 months to participants of the Council. The application process opens August 7th and is open to high school students. See here for more details.

NEW AND USED TOY DRIVE

The 2023 Used Toy Drive, sponsored by the City Facilities Recycling Program (CFRP) of LA Sanitation and Environment, is underway! Through August 25th, 2023, the CFRP will be collecting new, and gently used toys. Donate educational games and toys, video games and video game consoles, dolls, stuffed animals and more!

Donated toys will be provided to the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services’ Toy Loan Program, which provides access to toys to more than 30,000 low-income children each year. See flyer for more information.

The ONE•FIVE is made up of 5 distinct communities that add so much to our district. See below for specific updates for each of the neighborhoods.

BRIDGE TO SUCCESS CLEAN UP

On Saturday morning we were with Harbor City community members and the Southwest Carpenters to clean, paint, and create a safe passage for our children on the Frampton Bridge in time for school to start in August. These clean ups are an opportunity to strengthen and take pride in our community.

Saturday’s clean up was in loving memory of Lindsay Nicole Pollack. We were honored to have her mother Daphne and brother Chris in attendance - their strength and perseverance was an inspiration to us all.

WATER MAIN BREAK

I stopped by the water main break on Sunday at Vermont Ave., north of PCH in Harbor City. Thanks to the hard work of LADWP, homes were only temporarily affected by the water shut off. This section of Vermont from PCH to Bixby Ave on the west side has since been repaired. Thank you to LADWP, LAFD, and LAPD for the quick response.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

This week with Harbor City SLO Officer Pitones, we joined the newly formed Neighborhood Watch group in the Narbonne area. If your neighborhood would like help forming a Neighborhood Watch group, reach out to our team.

CALTRANS DUMP DAY

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Harbor Gateway Transit Center for Caltrans Dump Day. Caltrans employees assisted folks in getting bulky items out of their vehicles and into the dumpsters. We will keep you updated on when the next event is scheduled!

ALLEY CLEAN-UP

Thanks to the LA Bureau of Sanitation for working with our Clean 15 Team to clear an alley just south of El Segundo Boulevard. Please report any additional locations to our office!

CATFISH WITH A COP

Mark your calendar! On August 16, the Athens on the Hill community will be hosting Catfish with a Cop from 12 to 2 PM at the historic Otis Chandler estate. See you there!

FIRST THURSDAY

On Wednesday, in broad daylight, a man was shot in downtown San Pedro. While we’re still learning more information about what happened and the LAPD is continuing to investigate the situation, one thing is clear: we have to combat senseless violence and get guns off our streets. I was so proud of our community when the next night we turned out for the First Thursday Art Walk in an incredible display of resilience and celebration. This is what our community is about - showing support and love in the good and tough times. We’re stronger together.

MUSIC BY THE SEA

Congratulations to Music by the Sea! Last Sunday was the last in a series of incredible summer line-ups and performances. We’re so fortunate to have the historic bandshell at Pt. Fermin Park to serve as a venue for this wonderful event. Thank you Mike Caccavalla for your dedication to enriching our community and creating this space for us to be together. Already looking forward to next year’s MBTS.

MILLER BUTLER COMMUNITY APPRECIATION DAY

On Sunday I attended the Miller Butler Community Appreciation Day at Calimucho. We enjoyed live music, dancing, games, pizza and even a raffle from local businesses!

ONE-FIVE CAREER FAIR

Yesterday we held our second One-Five Career Fair, this time at the Watts Empowerment Center in Imperial Courts. It was an incredible opportunity for residents to connect with city, state, and private sector employers, have assistance in online applications, interview on-site, and some were even given same-day offers. Fairs like these can change lives and I’m glad we were able to connect One-Five residents to the resources to do so!

STANDING WITH WATTS

On Tuesday afternoon, I was honored to stand with the Watts Gang Task Force and community leaders in a press conference at our Watts City Hall to call for an end to a recent surge of gun violence and to work towards peace.

Over the last several days, my office and I have been meeting with the Task Force and Watts leaders to increase violence intervention and put an end to the violence we’ve been seeing in the community over the last two weeks. We were honored to have Mayor Bass join us in the morning as we work together to bring the resources to increase the peace in our communities.

FOOD FUNDRAISER IN HONOR OF ARTURO YBARRA

Now until 2 PM head over to the Watts/Century Latino Organization at 10360 Wilmington Ave. for a food fundraiser in honor of Arturo Ybarra. This week, I adjourned Wednesday’s council meeting in honor of Arturo, the founder of the Watts/Century Latino Organization and its Executive Director. Arturo will forever be remembered in the community for his remarkable accomplishments and love for Watts. May he rest in peace.

WILMINGTON SPORTS COMPLEX

On Thursday, I testified before the Rec and Parks Commission to ensure that the Banning High School Softball team can continue to use the Wilmington Sports Complex rent free and that the Boys and Girls Club can use the fields for soccer. I want to make sure that this complex is a place where all of our Wilmington kids can play recreation soccer.

MEMORIAL FOR COACH

We adjourned Tuesday’s council meeting in honor of Jose Quezada- a loving father and husband, and pillar of his community. Senselessly killed last Thursday evening in Wilmington, I wanted to share information about his memorial events taking place today and tomorrow. You can also donate here.

BACKPACK GIVEAWAY

On Thursday, our office attended a backpack giveaway with SBCC’s Wilmington Sin Fronteras. The group selected 30 families in high-need of school supplies and also distributed gift cards for residents to be able to buy new shoes for the upcoming school year.

Ha sido una semana dura en el One-Five. Desde Wilmington hasta Watts y San Pedro, vimos actos de violencia sin sentido. Mi corazón se rompe por aquellos que han sido impactados por estos horribles eventos y mis oraciones están con ustedes.

Pero también vimos el poder de la comunidad. Nos mantuvimos unidos en el dolor, pedimos justicia y nos mantuvimos hombro con hombro con fuerza. Mostramos la resiliencia de nuestra comunidad, trabajando unidos para sanar y seguir adelante.

A veces encontrar un espacio para sanar es muy difícil. A menudo no lo priorizamos y tratamos de alejarnos. Pero eso es lo que hace que cada comunidad del distrito sea tan especial, nos preocupamos y nos apoyamos mutuamente en los buenos y en los momentos difíciles. Al estar ahí el uno para el otro, muestra el amor que tienen, no solo por su comunidad sino por los demás. Y cuando se reúnen para compartir sus experiencias, miedos y sentimientos, se dan cuenta de que no están solos en esto. Eso es lo que hace que nuestra comunidad sea tan fuerte.

GRUPO DE LIMPIEZA DEL QUINCE

PROYECCIÓN DE ‘CONSTRUYO LA TORRE’

De Watts al puerto: el domingo nos reunimos en el Warner Grand Theatre para ver 'I Build The Tower' (Construyo la Torre), la historia del inmigrante italiano Simon Rodia, quien construyó las torres Watts sin ayuda alguna.

CELEBRACIONES DE NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

¡Tuvimos grandes eventos de National Night Out a lo largo del One-Five! Desde Watts a través del Gateway y Harbor City hasta Wilmington y San Pedro, disfrutamos pasar tiempo en nuestros parques locales construyendo comunidades, jugando juegos, comiendo helado y divirtiéndonos con nuestros vecinos y oficiales de la seguridad pública.

CONSEJO JUVENIL DEL ZOOLÓGICO DE LOS ÁNGELES

El programa L.A. Zoo Teen Council for Conservation tiene como objetivo brindar a los jóvenes angelinos una participación directa y experiencias de aprendizaje para beneficiar sus caminos educativos y viajes de vida. El Departamento del Zoológico ofrecerá un estipendio educativo de $300 por mes durante 9 meses a los participantes del Consejo. El proceso de solicitud se abre el 7 de agosto. COLECTA DE JUGUETES NUEVOS Y USADOS

¡Ya está en marcha la colecta de juguetes usados de 2023, patrocinada por el Programa de Reciclaje de Instalaciones de la Ciudad (CFRP, por sus siglas en inglés) de LA Sanitation and Environment! Hasta el 25 de agosto de 2023, el CFRP colectará juguetes nuevos y usados en buen estado. ¡Done juguetes y juegos educativos, videojuegos y consolas de videojuegos, muñecas, peluches y más!

Los juguetes donados se entregarán al Programa de Préstamo de Juguetes del Departamento de Servicios Sociales Públicos del Condado de Los Ángeles, que brinda acceso a juguetes a más de 30,000 niños de bajos ingresos cada año. Consulte el folleto para obtener más información.

LIMPIEZA PUENTE HACIA EL ÉXITO

El sábado por la mañana estuvimos con miembros de la comunidad de Harbor City y Southwest Carpenters para limpiar, pintar y crear un pasaje seguro para nuestros niños en el puente Frampton, justo a tiempo para el comienzo de las clases en agosto. Estas limpiezas son una oportunidad para fortalecer y enorgullecernos de nuestra comunidad.

La limpieza del sábado fue en memoria de Lindsay Nicole Pollack. Tuvimos el honor de contar con la presencia de su madre Daphne y su hermano Chris; su fuerza y perseverancia fueron una inspiración para todos nosotros.

RUPTURA DE AGUA

El domingo me detuve en la ruptura de la tubería principal de agua en Vermont Ave., al norte de PCH en Harbor City. Gracias al arduo trabajo de LADWP, los hogares solo se vieron afectados temporalmente por el corte del agua. Esta sección de Vermont desde PCH hasta Bixby Ave en el lado oeste ha sido reparada desde entonces. Gracias a LADWP, LAFD y LAPD por la rápida respuesta.

GRUPO DE VIGILANCIA DE LA VECINDAD

Esta semana con el Oficial Pitones, representante líder de Harbor City, nos unimos al grupo de Vigilancia Vecinal recién formado en el área de Narbonne. Si su vecindario desea ayuda para formar un grupo de Vigilancia de Vecinos, comuníquese con nuestro equipo.

DÍA DE TIRAR BASURA DE CALTRANS

Gracias a todos los que nos acompañaron en el Centro de Tránsito de Harbor Gateway para el Día de Tirar Basura de Caltrans. Los empleados de Caltrans ayudaron a las personas a sacar artículos voluminosos de sus vehículos y llevarlos a los contenedores de basura. ¡Le mantendremos informado sobre cuándo está programado el próximo evento!

PRIMER JUEVES

El miércoles, a plena luz del día, un hombre fue baleado en el centro de San Pedro. Si bien todavía estamos recabando más información sobre lo que sucedió y el LAPD continúa la investigación, una cosa está clara: tenemos que combatir la violencia sin sentido y sacar las armas de nuestras calles. Estaba tan orgulloso de nuestra comunidad cuando a la noche siguiente asistimos a la Caminata de Arte del Primer Jueves en una increíble muestra de resiliencia y celebración. De esto se trata nuestra comunidad: mostrar apoyo y amor en los momentos buenos y difíciles. Somos más fuertes juntos.

MÚSICA JUNTO AL MAR

¡Felicitaciones a Music by the Sea (Música junto al Mar)! El domingo pasado fue el último de una serie de increíbles alineaciones y actuaciones de verano. Somos muy afortunados de tener la histórica banda sonora en el parque Pt. Fermín para que sirviera como sede de este maravilloso evento. Gracias Mike Caccavalla por tu dedicación para enriquecer a nuestra comunidad y crear este espacio para que estemos juntos. Ya estoy deseando que llegue el MBTS del próximo año.

DÍA DE AGRADECIMIENTO A LA COMUNIDAD DE MILLER BUTLER

El domingo asistí al Día de Apreciación de la Comunidad Miller Butler en Calimucho. ¡Disfrutamos de música en vivo, baile, juegos, pizza e incluso una rifa de regalos de negocios locales!

FERIA DE TRABAJO

El viernes llevamos a cabo nuestra segunda Feria de Empleos del One-Five, esta vez en el Watts Empowerment Center en Imperial Courts. Fue una oportunidad increíble para que los residentes se conectaran con empleadores de la ciudad y del sector privado, el Departamento de Personal los ayudó con las solicitudes en línea, las entrevistas en el lugar y algunos incluso recibieron ofertas para el mismo día. Ferias como estas pueden cambiar vidas y me alegro de que hayamos podido conectar a los residentes con los recursos para hacerlo.

UNIDOS CON WATTS

El martes por la tarde, tuve el honor de estar con el Watts Gang Task Force y líderes comunitarios en una conferencia de prensa en nuestro Ayuntamiento de Watts para pedir el fin de una reciente oleada de violencia armada y trabajar por la paz.

Durante los últimos días, mi oficina y yo nos hemos estado reuniendo con el Grupo de trabajo y los líderes de Watts para aumentar la intervención contra la violencia y poner fin a la violencia que hemos estado viendo en la comunidad durante las últimas dos semanas. Nos sentimos honrados de que la alcaldesa Bass nos acompañará por la mañana mientras trabajamos juntos para traer los recursos para aumentar la paz en nuestras comunidades.

CAFÉ CON EL ASAMBLEÍSTA Y EL CONCEJAL

RECAUDACIÓN DE ALIMENTOS EN HONOR A ARTURO YBARRA

Hoy hasta las 2 p. m., diríjase a la Organización Latina Watts/Century en el 10360 Wilmington Ave. para una recaudación de fondos de alimentos en honor a Arturo Ybarra. El miércoles concluí la sesión del consejo en honor a Arturo, el fundador y director ejecutivo de la Organización Latina Watts/Century. Arturo siempre será recordado en la comunidad por sus notables logros y su amor por Watts. Que descanse en paz.

COMPLEJO DEPORTIVO DE WILMINGTON

El jueves, testifiqué ante la Comisión de Rec y Parques para garantizar que el equipo de Softball de la Escuela Secundaria Banning pueda continuar usando el Wilmington Sports Complex sin pagar alquiler y que el Boys and Girls Club pueda usar las canchas para fútbol. Quiero asegurarme de que este complejo sea un lugar donde todos nuestros niños de Wilmington puedan jugar fútbol recreativo.

MEMORIAL PARA EL ENTRENADOR

El martes cerramos la reunión del consejo en honor a José Quezada, un amoroso padre y esposo, y pilar de su comunidad. Fue un asesinato sin sentido el jueves pasado por la noche en Wilmington. ENTREGA DE MOCHILAS

El jueves, nuestra oficina asistió a una entrega de mochilas con Wilmington Sin Fronteras de SBCC. El grupo seleccionó a 30 familias con gran necesidad de útiles escolares y también distribuyó tarjetas de regalo para que los residentes pudieran comprar zapatos nuevos para el próximo año escolar.
