CHUMASH

Parshas Eikev - Shishi with Rashi

Moshe is still farbrenging with the Yidden, so they will behave in a way that they can STAY in Eretz Yisroel!

Moshe tells the Yidden about how special Eretz Yisroel is! Even though Mitzrayim is very beautiful, Eretz Yisroel is MUCH nicer!

In Mitzrayim, everyone waits for the Nile River to flood to water the fields, but in Eretz Yisroel, Hashem sends rain from Shomayim.

Then Moshe reminds the Yidden that if they listen to Hashem they will get rain and Hashem will take care of them, but if they don’t, Hashem won’t send rain. Everyone will be hungry because nothing will grow, and they will have to leave this very special place, Eretz Yisroel…

So Yidden! Listen to what Hashem says and you can live in Eretz Yisroel forever!

In today’s Chumash we have the second of the three paragraphs of Shema, which starts with the words “Vehaya Im Shamo’a”! If you learn it inside, you will know what it means every time you say it in davening!

TEHILLIM

83 - 87

Today’s Tehillim is kapitelach Pey-Gimmel to Pey-Zayin.

Every single kapitel in today’s Tehillim has a special niggun which was made in honor of the Rebbe’s Yom Huledes! Can you find the niggun in each one?

In Kapitel Pey-Daled, the posuk says “Yeilchu Mechayil El Choyil, Yeiro’eh El Elokim BeTzion.” This means that people who trust in Hashem go from strength to strength, and they go before Hashem in Yerushalayim.

The Rebbe tells us that Yeilchu Meichayil El Choyil, when we are always doing better than before, brings Yeiro’eh El Elokim Betzion, that we will be able to go to the Beis Hamikdosh! When we keep trying to do better, every single day and every single hour, we will bring Moshiach!

Chassidus says that there is a new chayus from Hashem that comes into the world, not just every day, but every hour! When that chayus comes, we get more opportunities to grow in Yiddishkeit! We need to make sure to use that new energy to do more!

TANYA

Igeres Hakodesh Siman Hey

We are learning about how tzedakah “makes Hashem’s name.”

Hashem’s name is written with a Yud and a Hey. Each of these letters does something different:

The Yud of Hashem’s name gives chayus to Olam Haba, which is more ruchniyus’dik, and the Hey gives chayus to Olam Hazeh (here!), where Hashem is more hidden and we can’t feel the chayus as much.

In the beginning, there were no Yidden, and Hashem gave His chayus WITHOUT anyone doing anything! But after Adam HaRishon was created, and especially after the Yidden became Hashem’s nation, Hashem needs US to do mitzvos so He will give chayus to the world.

What mitzvah especially has this koach for Hashem to give chayus to the Hey, so that Olam Hazeh will be able to exist?

You guessed it! The mitzvah of tzedakah!

Because when we give chayus to another person by giving tzedakah, Hashem ALSO gives tzedakah — He gives chayus to the world!

HAYOM YOM

Yud-Zayin Menachem Av

Yesterday we said that Chassidus is like fire.

Why is this? The Tzemach Tzedek explained:

Fire is hot — it has lots of chayus! Chassidus is like fire because it gives chayus to the Torah that we learn. Chassidus explains the Neshama of the halachos that we learn. Even when the neshama is in Gan Eden, it learns the same halacha that we learn in the world! But since there is no Gashmius there, it learns the Ruchnius of the halacha.

Chassidus teaches us the Ruchnius of the halachos! When a Yid knows that his neshama will learn the same thing in Gan Eden as he is learning now, it gives him a special chayus!

That’s why Chassidus is compared to fire — because when we learn it, it lights a fire in our neshama and brings excitement to our learning.

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #104 - Mitzvas Asei #148

Today we learn the Mitzvas ASEI (what to do) of the Mitzvas Lo Saasei we learned yesterday (Mitzvas Asei #148). Yesterday we learned that we are not allowed to take the baby birds while the mother is there. Today we learn that we SHOULD send away the mother bird before we take her babies or eggs from her nest.

Many times Hashem gives us a mitzvah in two ways, so that we will get a bigger reward when we do the mitzvah, the reward for a Mitzvas Asei AND a Mitzvas Lo Saasei!

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Ki Seitzei: שַׁלֵּחַ תְּשַׁלַּח אֶת הָאֵם וְאֶת הַבָּנִים תִּקַּח לָךְ

The halachos of how to keep this mitzvah are all explained in the last perek of Mesechta Chulin.

RAMBAM

Hilchos Shechitah

Perek Yud-Beis: In today’s Rambam, we learn the halachos about a mitzvah we learned before: Not to shecht a mother animal and her baby on the same day. This mitzvah is called “Oso Ve’es Bno.”

Perek Yud-Gimmel: In this perek, we learn the halachos about the mitzvah of Shiluach HaKan, sending away the mother bird before taking her babies or eggs from her nest.

Perek Yud-Daled: We learn the halachos of “Kisui HaDam,” covering the blood of an animal after we shecht it.

The Rambam finishes the halachos of Shechitah, and the end of the whole Sefer Kedusha, with a lesson: We should cover the blood with dirt using our HANDS, not our feet, to show that Hashem’s mitzvah is special to us! By treating the mitzvos with respect, we are giving respect to the One Who commanded the mitzvos — to Hashem!

Now we finished learning the halachos about Shechitah!

Mazel Tov, we have just finished the whole Sefer Kedushah! Tomorrow we are IY”H going to start a new sefer, Sefer Hafla’ah!

RAMBAM PEREK ECHOD

Hilchos Milah - Perek Gimmel

We learn the brachos we say when we do a Bris Milah. There is a bracha for the mohel, and a bracha for the father.

Mazel Tov! We have now finished learning this set of halachos!

INYANA D'YOMA

Yidden and the Moon - Part 1

We just celebrated Chamisha-Asar B’Av! We learned that there are many special things that happened to Yidden on this day, which makes it a Yom Tov.

One main point of this Yom Tov is that it shows how Yidden will have the greatest good when Moshiach comes after the terrible Churban that happened on Tisha B’Av.

This Yom Tov is in the middle of the month, when we have a full, round moon. Yidden are also compared to the moon, which grows to be full again after being small! The same way, even though the time of Tisha B’Av made the Yidden feel very small, Hashem made many good things happen for us on Chamisha-Asar B’Av, like the full, shining moon. This good will be complete when Moshiach comes.

Still, the Chachomim tell us only one lesson of what we need to do from this Yom Tov: Since the nights start getting longer, we should start learning more Torah, and Hashem will add life to our lives.

Of course, since the nights keep getting longer, we need to keep adding more in Torah each day!

But this lesson doesn’t seem to be connected to the full moon of this Yom Tov! The full moon lasts only one day, and then it gets smaller again. But the Torah learning we are adding in is supposed to become more every day!

So how is adding in learning Torah a lesson that is connected to the full moon of Chamisha-Asar B’Av?

We will IY”H learn the answer in the next shiur!

TEFILLAH

Yud-Beis Pesukim - Yogaati

The posuk Yogaati tells us that we need to try hard, and then we can be sure that we will have hatzlacha!

Yogaati Velo Motzosi, Al Taamin — If someone says, I tried hard and I didn’t find what I was looking for, and I didn’t have hatzlacha, don’t believe them!

Lo Yogaati Umotzosi, Al Taamin — If someone says, I didn’t try hard at all, and I was able to do it right away, don’t believe them either.

Yogaati Umotzosi, Taamin — If someone says, I tried hard and it worked, then believe them!

The Mishna says that with things in Torah and Yiddishkeit, if someone says that they tried hard and they didn’t have hatzlacha, we shouldn’t believe them!

In a sicha to the girls of Camp Emunah, the Rebbe says that another meaning of the word Taamin is that the Torah believes in you! The Torah is sure that YOU CAN DO IT! Every Yid is built to have hatzlacha, and if we try, we WILL be able to have that hatzlacha!

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Shabbos Light

The main mitzvah of Neiros Shabbos is for candles to be lit at the table where the family will eat the Shabbos meal. This brings Shalom Bayis and Oneg Shabbos!

But that’s not the WHOLE mitzvah!

The Chachomim taught that there should be light in the whole house, wherever people go on Shabbos!

Even though we don’t bentch licht in every room, we should make sure that there is a light on in every part of our homes. This keeps people from tripping and falling on things on Shabbos!

Even a bedroom that we like to keep dark should have a way to be lit up on Shabbos, for example with a light in a closet or hallway. This way there will be light if we need to see something.

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

Hashem Always Loves the Yidden

The Navi Hoshea lived at the time of the first Beis Hamikdash.

The Yidden in the times of Hoshea were not following Hashem. They were serving Avodah Zarah and not listening to Hashem. In the first perek of Hoshea, the Navi gives the Yidden tochacha for not staying strong in serving Hashem.

In the second perek, we see that Hashem always loves the Yidden, no matter what. We will see this love revealed in the times of the Geulah!

Vehaya Mispar Bnei Yisrael — The amount of Yidden will be

Kechol Hayam — Like the sand by the sea

Asher Lo Yimad Velo Yisafer — Which can’t be measured or counted!

Vehaya Bimkom Asher Yei’amar Lahem Lo Ami Atem — And instead of the Yidden being called “Not My nation,”

Yei’amar Lahem Bnei Keil Chai — They will be called “Children of the living Hashem!”

In a short maamar of the Alter Rebbe, this posuk is explained:

The word the posuk uses to say “instead of” is “Bimkom,” which can also mean “in the place.” The Alter Rebbe explains that in the same place where the Yidden were called “Not My nation,” because of the aveiros they did, they will be called “Bnei Keil Chai,” children of Hashem.

Where is that place? Right here in the Gashmius’dike world!

This posuk is saying that when Moshiach comes, the Yidden will do a complete teshuvah. Then, there will be nothing stopping kedusha from shining right here in Olam Hazeh like it shines in Ruchnius’dike worlds!

Because of this teshuvah, we will be able to see Hashem in this Gashmius’dike world the way Hashem can nowadays only be seen in Olam Ha’Atzilus!
