We were thrilled this week to finally launch our Jefferson Trail Rehabilitation Project! Since taking office, my team and I have been hard at work securing the necessary resources to start restoring the ecological preserve at the Ballona Wetlands, which has been heavily damaged over the last several years by the RV encampment along Jefferson Boulevard.

Unfortunately, the fires, violence, deadly overdoses, and environmental degradation at this location became symbolic of the City's failure to either address homelessness or protect our essential environmental assets. I ran for office on a platform committed to doing both, and that is exactly what we are doing. My only regret is that this problem was allowed to persist for so long, but I am excited for the opportunity to return this area to full use and enjoyment by the entire community.

My team and partners from LAHSA and other non-profits have consistently done outreach at Jefferson for the last several months as we prepared to kick off the rehabilitation project. We are pleased that some people accepted offers of services, and while we are disappointed that others declined, we will continue working with them.

As of this week, over 1,000 feet of Jefferson has been fully cleared, with the remaining portions to be completed over the next several weeks as the work moves toward Culver Boulevard. These anticipated improvements will leave this precious habitat area in far better condition.

I would like to thank the numerous City departments, outreach and service providers, Friends of the Ballona Wetlands, and community organizations, like Friends of the Jungle, for their collaboration and partnership in making sure this effort is a success!

 Ballona Interceptor: Epic Storm Season!
The Interceptor 007 has had an amazing storm season in Ballona Creek! Since its deployment in October 2022, the Interceptor prevented more than 77 tons of trash and debris from reaching local beaches and the Santa Monica Bay. That’s enough to fill eight school buses!

The Interceptor’s onboard trash bins were filled and offloaded 14 times over the course of seven months. The offloaded material was taken to a local waste management facility for sorting, disposal and/or recycling. Altogether, 2,040 pounds of plastic - equivalent to about 48,700 plastic bottles - were recovered for recycling.
Renters Resources

As the August 1 deadline of certain tenant protections are coming to expire, the mayor's office is working with the Los Angeles Housing Department to prepare resources for Angelenos that may be impacted.
