On Thursday evening, our community of Wilmington was rocked to its core. Jose Quezada was a wonderful man, a father, husband, and a dedicated community supporter. Tragically, he was killed by gunfire after a Summer Night Lights event at the Wilmington Recreation Center.

Summer Night Lights is a program to combat violence and make our community safe. We had 600 people out there on Thursday evening doing absolutely the right thing, enjoying their neighborhood park. And Jose was there in service, doing what he has done for so many in our community: feeding his neighbors by barbecuing. Beloved by Wilmington residents, he was a man who the community would turn to to provide meals when their loved ones passed away from acts of violence.

My heart breaks for the Quezada family and for our community of Wilmington who loved him very much. We have to grieve, we have to heal, but we also have to find ways to move forward. We won’t allow horrific acts like this to tear our community and sense of safety apart.

Last night we showed just that as we participated in a vigil to remember this great man and let the world know that this is our park. From faith to community leaders, we joined together to grieve and to start to heal. Healing takes time and right now, full of grief, it’s the darkest of days. But by being with each other in support and love, we can move forward step by step.

CLEAN 15

Our Clean 15 Team has hit the ground running! In the past two weeks we’ve taken well over 100 tons of trash out of the community, picked up 200 tires and we’re charging full steam ahead! If there’s an illegal dumping site in your neighborhood, call our district office!

I BUILD THE TOWER SCREENING

We're extending the “Cinematic Bridge” from Watts to the Harbor with the acclaimed documentary 'I Build The Tower’ - the story of Italian Immigrant Simon Rodia who single handedly built the Watts Towers.

Join us and LA Harbor International Film Festival (LAHIFF) this Sunday, July 30th at 3 PM at the Warner Grand Theatre. The event is free to the public, first come-first seated. To attend this special screening click here.

Tuesday, August 1st is National Night Out! Bring your family, friends and neighbors for an evening of fun and community building with our public safety officers throughout the One-Five. See above for National Night Out events in your community.

TOURING THE HARBOR

The captains and boat crews who deliver the port pilots to their ship assignments have incredibly important jobs. These crews enable the pilots who guide in the large vessels that call on the LA Harbor - helping move billions of dollars of goods through the world economy. The work of the pilots and crews is specialized, highly skilled, and critical to international goods movement. This week I took a tour of the boat crews and the pilots' workplaces to have a better understanding of the critical and sensitive work that they perform everyday.

SAIL GP

Declared the tightest racetrack in SailGP history, the Port of Los Angeles challenged crews like never before! There were plenty of close crosses, penalties and near misses! It was an honor to have the Port of Los Angeles host this year’s SailGP and although America put up a good fight, Spain claimed its first ever win. What a memorable weekend!

NEW AND USED TOY DRIVE

The 2023 Used Toy Drive, sponsored by the City Facilities Recycling Program (CFRP) of LA Sanitation and Environment, is underway! Through August 25th, 2023, the CFRP will be collecting new, and gently used toys. Donate educational games and toys, video games and video game consoles, dolls, stuffed animals and more!

Donated toys will be provided to the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services’ Toy Loan Program, which provides access to toys to more than 30,000 low-income children each year. See flyer for more information.

BRIDGE TO SUCCESS CLEAN UP

Join us now until 2 PM for our “A Bridge to Success” Community Beautification Day in memory of Lindsay Nicole Pollack. Stop by and spend the morning cleaning up the Frampton Pedestrian Bridge just in time for the new school year!

TORRANCE AIRPORT

On Tuesday evening I attended the Torrance City Council Meeting to give public comment on the Torrance Airport. Harbor City has been impacted by the noise generated from the airport’s flight patterns. I appreciated their recommendations to set fees and restrict operations at the airport. This is what being neighbors is all about - when you have an issue, you address it quickly and respectfully. I want to thank the Torrance City Council for giving me time to speak in support of a very important issue to the Harbor City community.

ILLEGAL DUMPING CLEAN UP

This week we worked with GAP to address this illegal dumping in an alley near Normont Elementary that was making the alley impassable. Thank you to the GAP team for promptly clearing the public right of way!

COFFEE WITH THE COUNCILMEMBER

Thank you to Harbor Gateway residents for coming out to Coffee with the Councilmember at the Enclave on Tuesday night! From more green space to underpass lighting and combating illegal dumping - talking with each other about ways to improve the quality of life in the Gateway gives me guidance and inspiration as we continue this work together.

CLEARING FREEWAY OFF-RAMPS

CalTrans Trash and Debris teams have been hard at work cleaning various freeway off-ramps in the Harbor Gateway. This week, workers cleared trash on both sides of the 105 along Avalon Boulevard! To make a CalTrans service request, please visit https://csr.dot.ca.gov/ and follow the prompts!

DUMP DAY

Caltrans is hosting a Dump Day TODAY until 1 PM (or until intake capacity is reached) at the Harbor Gateway Park and Ride Lot at 731 W. 182nd St. Caltrans will have staff on site to accept household waste and approved debris at no charge. Stop by and drop off unwanted furniture and bulky household items, glass, mattresses and more. See flyer for approved and unapproved items.

STORY HOUR AT THE LIBRARY

Every Tuesday at 11:30 AM throughout the month of July has been story hour at San Pedro Public Library! Story hour is dark in August, but resumes in September on Mondays at 11:30.

This Tuesday, we read three books, sang songs and did a craft - all about “clouds”. I was happy to read Charles G. Shaw's 'It Looked Like Spilt Milk', a book that encourages us to be creative and use our imaginations. MARY STAR FIESTA

What a great turnout for the 75th Mary Star of the Sea Fiesta! From carnival rides, to games and good food, it was great to be with our neighbors on a warm summer night. A special congratulations to Emily Ramirez, this year’s fiesta queen, and to all the young women who participated. Their service to our community is an inspiration to everyone in the One-Five.

PEDRO PET PALS

Pedro Pet Pals is committed to providing comfort and support to homeless animals through the programs of the LA Harbor Animal Shelter and the SPCA. This weekend I attended the grand opening of Pedro Pet Pals Hyla Marrow Center, a veterinary clinic for cats, as well as celebrated the Pedro Pet Pals annual appreciation dinner.

WARREN CHAPEL CME FAMILY APPRECIATION

On Sunday our community came together for a worship and appreciation of Pastor Adam, First Lady Shari and the beautiful Stevensen family. Pastor Adam has been a guiding light in this community. From helping bring the first Black History Month banners to our San Pedro streets to working with the Barton Hill students by providing rewards for students to increase their attendance - Pastor Adams lives a life in service to the community and we are lucky to have him.

COMMUNITY POLICE ADVISORY BOARD

This Thursday our office attended the Southeast Community Police Advisory Board (C-PAB) to hear concerns from Watts and Gateway residents and get updates from LAPD Southeast Division. The next C-PAB event will be 5:30 PM on August 24th at 10811 S Main Street.

SUMMER NIGHT LIGHTS

Last Friday, I was joined by Mayor Bass for Summer Night Lights at Nickerson Gardens and Imperial Courts. Summer Night Lights is a safe way to activate our local rec centers in the evenings, spending time together, playing games, hanging out, eating and listening to music.

WILMINGTON WATERFRONT

On Monday, we took a tour of the active construction site of the Wilmington Waterfront with Wilmington community leaders. This "window on the waterfront" will feature a promenade, public pier and dock, and playground. We have a little more work to do before it's open to the public but I'm looking forward to this being a space for Harbor Area residents and the entire One-Five to come to enjoy our beautiful waterfront!

L.A. CARE BACKPACK GIVEAWAY

School is almost back and Saturday morning Connie and I distributed backpacks to families and students in Wilmington with the L.A. Care Community Resource Center! Summer is not over yet but events like these are a great way to get prepared for the new year.

FOOD DISTRIBUTION

On Saturday morning, I joined First Christian Church to distribute food to our Wilmington neighbors. Providing food gives families one less thing to worry about during difficult times. Last weekend we distributed cans of food, produce, juice, and eggs. Thank you to the volunteers who came out to help their community!

HOLY FAMILY CHURCH

On Thursday I attended the Holy Family Church Community Meeting with the East Wilmington residents. Holy Family hosts a monthly community meeting to discuss issues of public safety and quality of life. I regularly attend these sessions, and I appreciate the church leadership for making their hall a local meeting place.  This month I presented a certificate to Father Ruben Rocha in honor of his 25 years as a Catholic priest. Fr. Ruben has been at Holy Family since 2010, and welcomes all with open arms at every event that benefits the community.

El jueves por la noche, nuestra comunidad de Wilmington se estremeció hasta la médula. José Quezada fue un hombre maravilloso, un padre, esposo y un dedicado partidario de la comunidad. Trágicamente, fue asesinado a disparos después de un evento Summer Night Lights en el Centro Recreativo de Wilmington.

Summer Night Lights es un programa para combatir la violencia y hacer que nuestra comunidad sea segura. Tuvimos 600 personas el jueves por la noche haciendo absolutamente lo correcto, disfrutando del parque de su vecindario. Y José estaba allí en servicio, haciendo lo que ha hecho por tantos en nuestra comunidad: alimentar a sus vecinos haciendo barbacoas. Amado por los residentes de Wilmington, era un hombre al que la comunidad recurría para proporcionar comidas cuando sus seres queridos fallecían a causa de actos de violencia.

Mi corazón se rompe por la familia Quezada y por nuestra comunidad de Wilmington que lo amaba mucho. Tenemos que llorar, tenemos que sanar, pero también tenemos que encontrar formas de seguir adelante. No permitiremos que actos horribles como este destrocen nuestra comunidad y nuestra sensación de seguridad. Anoche mostramos precisamente eso al participar en una vigilia para recordar a este gran hombre y hacerle saber al mundo que este es nuestro parque.

Desde la fe hasta los líderes comunitarios, nos unimos para llorar y comenzar a sanar. La curación lleva tiempo y en este momento, lleno de dolor, es el día más oscuro. Pero al estar juntos en apoyo y amor, podemos avanzar paso a paso.

GRUPO DE LIMPIEZA DEL QUINCE

¡Nuestro equipo Clean 15 se ha puesto en marcha! ¡En las últimas dos semanas hemos sacado 100 toneladas de basura y 200 llantas de la comunidad y estamos avanzando a todo vapor! Si hay un vertedero ilegal en su vecindario, ¡llame a nuestra oficina de distrito!

DOCUMENTAL I BUILT THE TOWER (CONSTRUYO LA TORRE)

Estamos extendiendo el "Puente cinematográfico" de Watts al puerto con el aclamado documental 'I Build The Tower', la historia del inmigrante italiano Simon Rodia, quien construyó las torres de Watts sin ayuda alguna.

RECORRIENDO EL PUERTO

Los capitanes y las tripulaciones de los barcos que entregan a los prácticos del puerto a sus asignaciones de barcos tienen trabajos increíblemente importantes. Estas tripulaciones capacitan a los pilotos que guían en las grandes embarcaciones que hacen escala en el puerto de Los Ángeles, lo que ayuda a mover miles de millones de dólares en bienes a través de la economía mundial. El trabajo de los pilotos y tripulaciones es especializado, altamente calificado y fundamental para el movimiento internacional de mercancías. Esta semana hice un recorrido por las tripulaciones de los barcos y los lugares de trabajo de los prácticos para tener una mejor comprensión del trabajo crítico y sensible que realizan todos los días.

VELA GP

¡Declarada la pista de carreras más estrecha en la historia de SailGP, el Puerto de Los Ángeles desafió a las tripulaciones como nunca antes! ¡Hubo muchos cruces, penalizaciones y cuasi accidentes! Fue un honor que el Puerto de Los Ángeles fuera el anfitrión del Sail GP de este año y, aunque Estados Unidos dio una buena pelea, España obtuvo su primera victoria. ¡Qué memorable fin de semana!

COLECTA DE JUGUETES NUEVOS Y USADOS

¡Ya está en marcha la colecta de juguetes usados de 2023, patrocinada por el Programa de Reciclaje de Instalaciones de la Ciudad (CFRP, por sus siglas en inglés) de LA Sanitation and Environment! Hasta el 25 de agosto de 2023, el CFRP colectará juguetes nuevos y usados en buen estado. ¡Done juguetes y juegos educativos, videojuegos y consolas de videojuegos, muñecas, peluches y más!

Los juguetes donados se entregarán al Programa de Préstamo de Juguetes del Departamento de Servicios Sociales Públicos del Condado de Los Ángeles, que brinda acceso a juguetes a más de 30,000 niños de bajos ingresos cada año. Consulte el folleto para obtener más información.

LIMPIEZA PUENTE HACIA EL ÉXITO

AEROPUERTO DE TORRANCE

El martes por la noche asistí a la Reunión del Concejo Municipal de Torrance para hacer comentarios públicos sobre el Aeropuerto de Torrance. Harbor City se ha visto afectada por el ruido generado por los patrones de vuelo del aeropuerto. Aprecié sus recomendaciones para establecer tarifas y restringir las operaciones en el aeropuerto. De eso se trata ser vecinos: cuando tiene un problema, lo aborda de manera rápida y respetuosa. Quiero agradecer al Ayuntamiento de Torrance por darme tiempo para hablar en apoyo de un tema muy importante para la comunidad de Harbor City.

LIMPIEZA DE VERTIDO ILEGAL

Esta semana trabajamos con GAP para abordar este vertido ilegal en un callejón cerca de la escuela primaria Normont que estaba haciendo que el callejón fuera intransitable. ¡Gracias al equipo de GAP por despejar rápidamente el derecho de paso público!

CAFÉ CON EL CONCEJAL

¡Gracias a los residentes de Harbor Gateway por llegar a tomar un café con el concejal en el Enclave el martes por la tarde! Desde más espacios verdes hasta iluminación de pasos subterráneos y la lucha contra los vertidos ilegales: al hablar sobre las formas de mejorar la calidad de vida en Gateway me brinda la orientación e inspiración a medida que continuamos este trabajo juntos.

DESPEJANDO LAS RAMPAS DE SALIDA DE LA AUTOPISTA

Los equipos de basura y escombros de CalTrans han estado trabajando arduamente para limpiar varias rampas de salida de la autopista en Harbor Gateway. ¡Esta semana, los trabajadores sacaron la basura a ambos lados de la 105 a lo largo de Avalon Boulevard! Para realizar una solicitud de servicio de CalTrans, visite https://csr.dot.ca.gov/ y siga las indicaciones.

DÍA DE TIRAR LA BASURA

Caltrans está organizando un Día de Tirar la Basura HOY hasta la 1 p.m. (o hasta que se llene la capacidad) en el Harbor Gateway Park and Ride Lot en 731 W. 182nd St. Caltrans tendrá personal en el lugar para aceptar los desechos domésticos y los desechos aprobados sin cargo. HORA DEL CUENTO EN LA BIBLIOTECA

¡Todos los martes a las 11:30 a. m. durante todo el mes de julio ha sido la hora del cuento en la Biblioteca Pública de San Pedro! La hora del cuento desaparece en agosto, pero se reanuda en septiembre los lunes a las 11:30. Este martes, leímos tres libros, cantamos canciones e hicimos una manualidad, todo relacionado con las "nubes". Me alegró leer 'Parecía leche derramada' de Charles G. Shaw, un libro que nos anima a ser creativos y usar nuestra imaginación. FIESTA DE MARY STAR

¡Qué gran participación en la Fiesta número 75 de Mary Star of the Sea! Desde juegos mecánicos hasta juegos con premios  y buena comida, fue genial estar con nuestros vecinos en una cálida noche de verano. Una felicitación especial a Emily Ramírez, la reina de la fiesta de este año, y a todas las jóvenes que participaron. Su servicio a nuestra comunidad es una inspiración para todos en el One-Five.

PEDRO  PET PALS

Pedro Pet Pals se compromete a brindar comodidad y apoyo a los animales sin hogar a través de los programas del Refugio de animales LA Harbor y SPCA. Este fin de semana asistí a la gran inauguración de Pedro Pet Pals Hyla Marrow Center, una clínica veterinaria para gatos, y también celebré la cena anual de reconocimiento de Pedro Pet Pals.

AGRADECIMIENTO FAMILIAR A WARREN CHAPEL CME

El domingo nuestra comunidad se reunió para adorar y apreciar al pastor Adam Stevenson y su hermosa familia. El pastor Adam ha sido una luz guía en esta comunidad. Desde ayudar con las banderas del Mes de la Historia Afroamericana hasta trabajar con los estudiantes de Barton Hill, ayudando con la asistencia, el pastor Adams vive una vida al servicio de la comunidad y tenemos suerte de tenerlo.

JUNTA ASESORA COMUNITARIA PARA LA POLICÍA

Este jueves, nuestra oficina asistió a la Junta Asesora Comunitaria del Sureste para la Policía  (C-PAB) para escuchar las inquietudes de los residentes de Watts y Gateway y obtener actualizaciones de la División Sureste de LAPD. El próximo evento de C-PAB será el 24 de agosto a las 5:30 p. m. en 10811 S Main Street.

LUCES DE NOCHE DE VERANO

El viernes por la noche, me acompañó la alcaldesa Bass para Summer Night Lights en Nickerson Gardens e Imperial Courts. Summer Night Lights es una forma divertida y segura de activar nuestros centros recreativos locales por las noches, pasar tiempo juntos, jugar, pasar el rato, comer y escuchar música. FERIA DE TRABAJO

El 4 de agosto, de 10 AM a 4 PM, celebraremos nuestra segunda Feria de empleo One-Five en el Watts Empowerment Center. Conéctese con empleadores de la ciudad y del sector privado para encontrar un trabajo que le encante y comience su viaje profesional. Preinscríbase en línea aquí.

WILMINGTON WATERFRONT

El lunes, hicimos un recorrido por el sitio de construcción activo de Wilmington Waterfront con líderes de la comunidad de Wilmington. Esta "ventana al paseo marítimo" contará con un paseo marítimo, un muelle público, asientos, y un parque infantil. Tenemos un poco más de trabajo por hacer antes de que esté abierto al público, pero espero que este sea un espacio para que los residentes del área del puerto y todo el One-Five vengan a disfrutar de nuestro hermoso paseo marítimo.

ENTREGA DE MOCHILAS DE L.A. CARE

¡La escuela casi ha regresado y el sábado por la mañana Connie y yo distribuimos mochilas a familias y estudiantes en Wilmington con el Centro de Recursos Comunitarios de L.A. Care! El verano aún no ha terminado, pero eventos como estos son una excelente manera de prepararse para el nuevo año.

DISTRIBUCIÓN DE COMIDA

El sábado por la mañana, me uní a First Christian Church para distribuir alimentos a nuestros vecinos de Wilmington. Proporcionar alimentos les da a las familias una preocupación menos en tiempos difíciles. Esta mañana distribuimos latas de comida, frutas y verduras, jugo y huevos. ¡Gracias a los voluntarios que vinieron a ayudar a su comunidad!

POP UP DE VERANO DE CORAZONES DEL PUERTO

El jueves asistí a la reunión comunitaria de la Iglesia de la Sagrada Familia con los residentes de East Wilmington.  La Sagrada Familia organiza una reunión comunitaria mensual para discutir temas de seguridad pública y calidad de vida.  Asisto regularmente a estas sesiones y agradezco a los líderes de la iglesia por hacer de su salón un lugar de reunión local.  Este mes le entregué un certificado al Padre Rubén Rocha en honor a sus 25 años como sacerdote católico.  El padre Ruben ha estado en La Sagrada Familia desde el 2010 y recibe a todos con los brazos abiertos en cada evento que beneficia a la comunidad.
