July 28, 2023

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of joining the City of Los Angeles' Department of Recreation and Parks, the Bureau of Engineering, and community leaders for the grand reopening of the Chatsworth Park North Baseball Fields! After many months of work, the park has been significantly upgraded with a new irrigation system, grading and reseeding of the field, a new water fountain, the installation of new bleachers, and general improvements to the three existing baseball fields.

As your Councilmember, it remains critically important for me to find ways to maintain our district's open spaces, improve locations that are meaningful and historic to our community, and ensure that kids have access to safe and modern recreational spaces.

COMMUNITY SAFETY AT PETIT PARK

The brash and egregious crimes at Petit Park have rightfully struck a chord with the local community. My office is working with various departments including the LAPD, Recreation & Parks, and the Mayor’s office to crack down on violence in the park and surrounding areas.

Throughout this week, LAPD has deployed extra patrols within and around the park beginning in the afternoon hours to help deter any type of potential criminal activity. Additionally, the Mayor’s Office of Gang Reduction and Youth Development has been deployed to the area to assist in community outreach and provide assistance to any victims.

We will continue working on solutions to improve safety at the park and address the concerns of neighbors in the area.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Dr. David Ramey

Council District 12 is one of the places in Los Angeles that continues to cultivate and encourage equestrian tradition. Horsemanship has a long history in our community and even today, you will find organizations and individuals who are dedicated to the preservation of this culture and the well-being of horses throughout the district. One of those very individuals is Dr. David Ramey, who works as an equine veterinarian in the Chatsworth community.

Dr. David Ramey graduated from the Colorado State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1983. Following his graduation, Dr. Ramey completed an internship in Equine Medicine and Surgery at Iowa State University, entered private equine practice in Southern California in 1984, and then set up his ambulatory clinical practice, Ramey Equine, in 1987. Dr. Ramey’s practice specializes in the care and treatment of sport and pleasure horses. He cares for a diverse group of horses, from top-level hunters and jumpers to pleasure horses, miniature horses, and even the occasional donkey.

In addition to being a full-time practitioner, Dr. Ramey is also an internationally recognized researcher, author, lecturer, and blogger. He has written 13 books, 5 book chapters, and has had over 70 papers published in professional journals. He has lectured on various topics in universities, expos, and conventions around the United States, as well as Canada, Australia, and the UK. Dr. Ramey is also the current president of the Los Angeles Equine Advisory Committee, established by the City Council in 2008 to advise on matters pertaining to horses in Los Angeles.

A Chatsworth resident since 1998, Dr. Ramey lives with his wife, Marissa, and their irrepressible puggle, Funny. Dr. Ramey is especially proud of his two sons, both of whom attended Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth. His son Jackson is an accomplished linguist in service to the US Navy, and his son Aidan is an electrical engineer working at NASA's famed Ames Research Lab in Mountain View, CA.

We thank Dr. Ramey for his advocacy, leadership, and care for the horses in Council District 12 and the City of Los Angeles. If you would like to learn more about Dr. Ramey and Ramey Equine, follow this link
