We're closely monitoring Hurricane Hilary, which is expected to impact Los Angeles from the late evening of Sunday, August 20th through Monday, August 21st. Storm conditions may include heavy rainfall, severe winds, storm surges, high-risk surf conditions, and a heightened threat of wildlfires.

We are focused on ensuring that the 11th district, especially the coastal area, is well-prepared for any possible effects of the expected storm.

Safety Tips for Extreme Weather Conditions:

  1. Secure Your Home: Anticipate runoff; use sandbags where necessary. Consider boarding up windows and doors if required. To find sandbags, head to your nearest LA County Fire Station. Learn more here.
  2. Be Prepared To Leave: If local authorities advise, be ready to evacuate promptly.
  3. Stay Updated: Tune into local radio or TV channels for the latest instructions and updates from officials.
  4. Help The Vulnerable: Please be willing to assist disabled, elderly, or others who may need extra help during an evacuation.
  5. Exercise Caution While Driving: Wet and slippery roads demand extra care. Please avoid crossing flooded areas or stepping into moving water.
  6. Plan Ahead: Assemble an emergency kit with essentials such as food, water, and medications for a minimum of 10 days. Draft evacuation routes and establish communication plans with family.

Valuable Resources:

Beach Safety Notice: With potential flash floods and unsafe runoff, certain beaches are deemed unsafe. Currently, alerts have been issued for:

  • Mothers Beach, Marina Del Rey: Entire swim area.
  • Santa Monica Pier: 100 yards on either side of the pier.

Measure H Homeless Services
In 2017, voters approved Measure H, a tax increase to fund county homeless services. Six years later, the mental health and addiction crisis on our streets is worse than ever. If taxpayers are asked to renew Measure H before its expiration in 2027, the City of Los Angeles must receive an equitable share of the services and have more oversight of how the funds are spent.

That's why this week in Council, I introduced a motion directing that any renewal of Measure H ensures the City receives resources proportionate to the need of our homeless population.

Retail Crime Task Force
The mayor and LAPD have announced a multi-jurisdictional task force in response to rising "smash and grab" robberies across the City. The task force includes multiple law enforcement agencies who will partner with prosecutors from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, and the California Attorney General’s Office.

Retail theft and smash and grab robberies are destroying businesses, jeopardizing public safety, and driving up costs for consumers. The message we are sending is clear: these events are unacceptable and criminals will be held accountable for their actions.

Traffic Alert
Heads up! Cleaning in the Sepulveda Blvd. Tunnel will require some lane closures and might affect your commute. The dates for the cleanings are August 21 - 25 from 11 PM to 5 AM.

Note: Both northbound & southbound traffic will continue, but expect delays. Please heed all signs and use suggested detour routes. I am proud to say my office secured money for maintenance of the tunnel in this year's budget.

Park's Pick
This week's Park's Pick is Motoring Coffee. Not just for car enthusiasts, this coffee shop has a universal appeal. The best bit -they've rejuvenated a West LA spot on Olympic that sat vacant for a decade! Whether or not you're into cars, this place is a must-visit. Plus, they host some really cool events you might want to check out.
Adopt-A-Pet

Introducing our pet of the week – Everest! At 8 months old and weighing in at 3 lbs, Everest is an adorable bunny with a curious spirit for exploration. Come and meet him at our West LA Animal Services Center.
