This week in LA County, there's renewed concern about Xylazine, a veterinary tranquilizer known to exacerbate drug overdoses. The drug is often combined with the already deadly fentanyl to create a drug cocktail that mirrors heroin but is resistant to current overdose reversal methods.

The Westside is no stranger to the challenges of drug use. In May, I introduced a motion advocating for enhanced communication and information sharing between our first responders, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and City personnel regularly encountering these substances. I cannot stress enough the urgency of addressing this issue, especially given its potential impact on our most vulnerable populations, including the homeless and our youth. We must proactively tackle this challenge to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities.

Ballona Progress Report
This week marked a milestone as we successfully cleared the remaining RVs and vehicles from the Ballona Wetlands. Our attention now turns to rehabilitating this vital area. I recognize that encampments exist throughout the district. I want to assure you that my team remains dedicated to offering our unhoused community safe spaces and ensuring our public spaces are clean and accessible for everyone.
Temescal Canyon Update

The Temescal Canyon Road repair is having significant impacts in the Palisades. The damage to Temescal Canyon is just one example of the significant infrastructure damage caused by our winter storms, and the damage in this area is extensive and will be expensive to repair.

Numerous City departments are actively engaged in this effort, and on Friday, I introduced a motion in City Council to identify potential funding sources for a long-term solution. Your safety and accessibility remain my top priorities, so please be patient as we continue this required work.
Releasing Rehabilitated Sea Lions
On Thursday, we joined the Marine Mammal Care Center at Charlie's Beach to release two rehabilitated sea lions, Lou Lou and Crozier, who both spent time recovering at the temporary center we helped set up on the Marina Peninsula. The moment was both a touching and poignant reminder of how critical it is to protect our precious coast and wildlife.

A big thank you to the volunteers who collaborated with our office and the Marine Mammal Care Center to assist these animals. We couldn't have done this work without your help!

Sadly, we may face another demoic acid algo bloom this fall, so please stay engaged and watch for further updates.
Neighborhood Councils: Voices Of Our Communities

It's an exciting time for local democracy with a shift in leadership in our Neighborhood and Community Councils around the District. These local councils are made up of community volunteers who know their neighborhoods best, and they serve in an advisory capacity to my council office. From homelessness and public safety to land use and business development, our neighborhood and community councils are a great way to get involved in local government!

Paying Tribute to Our Fallen Heroes

On Friday, I closed our council session in honor of the three dedicated public servants who tragically lost their lives in the line of duty in Riverside County.

While battling a brush fire, two firefighting aircrafts tragically collided, taking the lives of two firefighters and a helicopter pilot. This year also marked the 25th anniversary of the LAFD helicopter "FIRE 3" crash in Griffith Park, a somber reminder of past losses. You can view my closing remarks below.

Park's Pick
This week's park pick is truly special. While I typically spotlight local businesses that you can visit, this week, I am highlighting an organization that has been instrumental in protecting our precious ocean wildlife: the Marine Mammal Care Center. Their year-round efforts to help our marine wildlife are essential, and their heroic efforts this summer to save our sea lions deeply touched our community and my heart.
Adopt-A-Pet

This week, meet Margie: a 5-year-old, 67 lb bundle of joy who's passionate about playing ball and is in search of her forever home. Come get acquainted with this sweet girl at our East Valley Animal Services Center.
