This weekend we’re expecting Hurricane Hilary to hit the LA Region. While it’s expected to be downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it reaches Southern California Sunday, there will be possible heavy rainfall and flash flooding with dangerous impacts.

Please take steps to be prepared if there is an emergency, stay safe, and be informed on how you will get important information, such as evacuation orders.

Stay Informed

Monitor forecast updates and ensure you have multiple methods of receiving warnings, including wireless emergency alerts, weather apps & local TV, radio & news stations.

LADWP customers who have lost power should report an outage by calling 1-800-DIAL-DWP or online at www.ladwp.com/outages. You can sign up for outage alerts via text and email at www.ladwp.com/OutageAlert.

Be Prepared

Preparing for a flood — or any emergency situation — starts with making a plan with your immediate family and neighbors.

This includes packing a go-bag with important documents (in a Ziplock or another type of waterproof bag), medication, an extra set of glasses (or contacts), a comfortable pair of shoes, a change of clothes, small bills (a number of $1 and $5 bills), a phone charger, flashlight, water and nonperishable food.

If you have pets, pack food, treats and an extra leash if you have one. Keep every family member’s needs in mind when creating your go-bag.

Follow Emergency Orders

If an evacuation is ordered or advised in your community, evacuate immediately. Stay in the know about warnings and alerts by signing up with your local emergency mass notification system. For LA Residents this includes Alert L.A. County and Notify L.A. to receive notifications via text message or email.

If a Flood Watch Is Issued

If a flood warning or watch is issued for your community and you have some time before evacuating, relocate valuables (particularly water-sensitive ones, such as laptops, tablets and smart devices) from lower to upper floors. You should also disconnect all electrical appliances or turn off electric circuits at the fuse box or circuit breaker panel. If you have been evacuated, wait until authorities give the all-clear to return to your home.

I firmly believe that we do not need to choose between protecting the environment and keeping good, union jobs. Yet, continuously we see longshore workers throughout the nation being wrongfully threatened with losing their jobs to what is promoted to be environmentally sustainable automation technology. After hearing that the driverless electric cargo handlers at one of the Port terminals may be fueled by diesel, on Tuesday, I introduced a motion to see if jobs were eliminated on a broken promise.

My motion asks for the Port of Los Angeles to report in 30 days to the Trade, Travel, and Tourism Committee, of which I am the Vice Chair, to answer the sustainability allegations for the driverless cargo handlers and to provide an accounting of the direct reduction in labor hours at the terminal.

247TH PLACE BLOCK PARTY

Saturday was the second annual 247th Place Neighborhood End of Summer block party in Harbor City! It was a perfect summer event with kiddie pools, bike riding in the streets and a chili cook off. It was great spending the last days of summer with our neighbors and the chili was delicious!

SUMMER NIGHT LIGHTS

On Saturday I spent the evening at the Harbor City Recreation Center for Summer Night Lights. We had backpack giveaways and lots of games for the kids! Reminder, now through August 25th, Summer Night Lights will be held on Fridays and Saturdays instead of the weeknight programming. See here for more information.

POOL PARTY

Save the date! Our office is partnering with the Department of Rec and Parks for an end of summer pool party at the Harbor Pool. One-Five residents are welcome to join us September 2nd from 2-5 PM for music, food, activities, and games.

CATFISH WITH A COP

Every year, Athens on the Hill’s Community Association hosts Catfish with a Cop for the officers from the Southeast Police Station in appreciation of their duties. This week we celebrated this event with catfish cooked by “Catfish Man” Ben King, music by the legendary Lonzo Williams, and hosted inside the beautiful Otis Chandler estate - a truly memorable event. Thank you for inviting me and I can’t wait for next year!

COMMUNITY CLEAN UP

I want to shout out the residents that live off of Rosecrans Ave. that helped coordinate a Community Cleanup this past weekend. Thank you for taking pride in your community and making our neighborhoods more beautiful and safer!

This week, we got the first look into the brand new Blue Burro location that is coming into the Harbor Gateway off of Sepulveda Blvd. The restaurant will be opening soon!

BACK TO SCHOOL DRIVE

This weekend was the Back to School drive at Warren Chapel CME in partnership with the San Pedro Committee Network. I joined them as they gave away backpacks, school supplies and personal care supplies for students to prepare them for their classes this upcoming year. Thank you to Pastor Stevenson, Warren Chapel, and the SPCN for your commitment to the Harbor children!

CANNOLI WITH THE COUNCILMEMBER

Join us Saturday, August 26th from 10 AM to 12 PM at the Grand Annex for a more intimate town hall setting… Cannolis with the Councilmember. Bring your questions, concerns, mugs (coffee will be served) and appetite!

COASTAL NC RETREAT & ALTASEA TOUR

On Saturday, I attended a session of the Coastal Neighborhood Council annual retreat with President Doug Epperhardt and the NC board. The retreat venue was at the AltaSea campus. Afterward we toured the facility at Berths 58-60 in the Port. AltaSea is conducting breakthrough research and at the forefront of discovering solutions to food and energy supply, climate change, and ocean exploration. Check out the wonders of nature - these pink lights are natural illumination from an algae farm called Holdfast!

BRAND NEW PLAY EQUIPMENT AT NICKERSON

On Wednesday we cut the ribbon on brand new play equipment at Nickerson Gardens! It felt like the whole community came out to celebrate! This will be a great place for our kids to play and get exercise and for residents to spend time outdoors with each other. A special thanks to Flea for his personal efforts to help the children and families here at Nickerson Garden. His key involvement in the raising of funds got this project moving and we’re so grateful!

SUMMER NIGHT LIGHTS

On Friday I joined the Summer Night Lights Backpack Giveaway at Nickerson Gardens. It was great to spend the evening outdoors with our community playing games, eating snacks, and with a very special performance from the Girls ROC Era.

COMMUNITY POLICE ADVISORY BOARD

This week we attended the Spanish Community Police Advisory Board at St. Lawrence where officers from our Southeast Police Division presented to our community members a fentanyl awareness program. We also took the opportunity to share with our community members what our office has been up to!

WILMINGTON SENIOR CLUBS

Lots of great activities going on with our Wilmington Seniors this week. Our office joined them on Wednesday where they meet weekly for bingo and raffles. Then on Friday, our office provided a bus for them to spend the day at Cabrillo Beach.

BACK TO SCHOOL DRIVES

It’s been so incredible to see our communities step up and prepare our kids for their return to school. On Saturday in Wilmington, I joined two back to school drives at Greenbelt Park and New Hope Church. We gave away backpacks, school supplies, and new shoes so they were ready for LAUSD classes which began on Monday.

A BRIDGE HOME IMPROVEMENTS

Last week I wrote a letter about the concerns our community has about the A Bridge Home (ABH) site at Eubank. Part of the promise of the ABH program was the augmentation of both sanitation and enforcement services for the neighborhoods in close proximity to the site. I’m proud to say that they have taken my recommendations and we saw how quickly when this week tree trimming services began cutting down the trees around the Bridge Home site. I am looking forward to seeing my other requests including extra patrolling and weekly street cleaning be implemented as well.

FIESTA DE BLOQUE EN 247th PLACE

¡El sábado fue la segunda fiesta anual de fin de verano del vecindario 247th Place en Harbor City! Fue un evento de verano perfecto con piscinas para niños, andar en bicicleta en las calles y cocinar chili. ¡Fue genial pasar los últimos días de verano con nuestros vecinos y el chili estuvo delicioso!

LUCES DE NOCHE DE VERANO

El sábado pasé la noche en el Centro de Recreación de Harbor City para las Luces de la Noche de Verano. ¡Tuvimos sorteos de mochilas y muchos juegos para los niños! RETIRO COSTERO Y TOUR DE ALTASEA

El sábado asistí a una sesión del retiro anual del Consejo Vecinal Costero con el presidente Doug Epperhardt y la junta directiva. El lugar de retiro fue en el campus de AltaSea. Luego recorrimos las instalaciones en los amarres 58-60 en el Puerto. AltaSea está realizando investigaciones progresivas y está a la vanguardia en el descubrimiento de soluciones para el suministro de alimentos y energía, el cambio climático y la exploración oceánica. Eche un vistazo a las maravillas de la naturaleza: ¡estas luces rosadas son iluminación natural de una granja de algas llamada Holdfast!

EQUIPO DE JUEGO NUEVO EN NICKERSON

¡El miércoles cortamos el listón del nuevo equipo de juego en Nickerson Gardens! ¡Parecía que toda la comunidad salió a celebrar! Este será un gran lugar para que nuestros hijos jueguen y hagan ejercicio y para que los residentes pasen tiempo al aire libre juntos. CONSEJO ASESOR DE LA POLICÍA COMUNITARIA

Esta semana asistimos a la Junta Asesora de la Policía Comunitaria en Español en St. Lawrence, donde los oficiales de nuestra División de Policía del Sureste presentaron a los miembros de nuestra comunidad un programa de concientización sobre el fentanilo. ¡También aprovechamos la oportunidad para compartir con los miembros de nuestra comunidad lo que ha estado haciendo nuestra oficina!

CLUBES DE WILMINGTON PARA PERSONAS MAYORES

Esta semana se realizaron varias actividades excelentes en los centros para personas mayores de Wilmington. Nuestra oficina llegó a visitar el Club Sincero del Wilmington Senior Center para su juego de bingo y rifas semanales. El viernes, nuestra oficina proporcionó un autobús para que el Harbor Senior Club pasara el día en Cabrillo Beach.

CAMPAÑAS DE REGRESO A LA ESCUELA

Ha sido increíble ver a nuestras comunidades preparar a nuestros niños para su regreso a clases. El sábado en Wilmington, me uní a dos campañas con eventos de regreso a la escuela en Greenbelt Park y New Hope Church. Regalamos mochilas, útiles escolares y zapatos nuevos para que estuvieran listos para las clases del LAUSD que comenzaron el lunes.

UN PUENTE MEJORAS PARA EL HOGAR

La semana pasada escribí una carta a la alcaldesa sobre las preocupaciones que tiene nuestra comunidad sobre el sitio A Bridge Home (ABH) en la calle Eubank. Parte de la promesa del programa ABH fue el aumento de los servicios de saneamiento y cumplimiento para los vecindarios cercanos al sitio. Me enorgullece decir que han tomado mis recomendaciones y empezamos a ver el cambio esta semana, cuando los servicios de poda de árboles comenzaron a talar los árboles alrededor del sitio de A Bridge Home. Tengo muchas ganas de ver que mis otras solicitudes, incluyendo patrullas adicionales y limpieza semanal de calles, también se implementen.
