This Monday our kids will put on their backpacks, lace up their shoes, and head back to school! In the One-Five, one thing is clear, we care deeply about our children, and providing a space for them to grow and enriching them for a prosperous future is incredibly important to our community. We saw that in many ways the last few weeks as we came together for back to school giveaways full of new backpacks, shoes, and even haircuts to get our kids ready to return to the classroom.

This summer has been full of our community coming together for street fairs, barbecues, and picnics in our One-Five parks. It’s important that throughout the year we continue the programming for our youth. Whether it’s after school programs at our local youth centers or after school sports, we need to continue to find and create spaces for our kids to thrive.

I want to also take a moment to shout out the two One-Five summer interns: Marveon Mabon and Ren MacMorran! Both currently in college, Marveon and Ren spent their summer serving the One-Five communities, culminating in helping throw last week’s Career Fair. Thank you for your service to the One-Five!

“Quiet Zones” for railroad crossings can come in many forms and can be established after implementing safety improvements that provide the same level of risk reduction as would be provided by the train horn. Once in place, a “quiet zone” reduces or eliminates the required horn blasts by a train. As a main entryway for goods movement to and from the Port of Los Angeles, Wilmington has faced the brunt of environmental injustice and quality of life impacts.

As a city, we must support the neighborhoods that bear the impacts of cargo transport. On Wednesday I introduced a motion, following on a budget line item I introduced, to get a report on funding for a quiet zone feasibility study and implementation throughout the One-Five. I’m requesting that the preliminary list of crossings include the highest priority crossings due to the noise and environmental impacts to the surrounding community. This project will require support from our communities, especially the Neighborhood Councils, so I hope they will provide valuable feedback.

CLEAN 15 HIGHLIGHTS

RIDING THE J LINE THROUGH THE ONE-FIVE

On Monday, I joined the CEO of Metro Los Angeles, Stephanie Wiggins, to ride the J Line (previously known as the Silver Line) from DTLA through the One-Five to the Harbor. We talked about the future of Metro including the electrification of buses, creating electrical charging infrastructure, safety and accessibility on the lines, and more. Thanks for the ride!

ILWU STRONG

This week we worked with the ILWU to collect donations to fill up a shipping container to Maui to assist their longshore members and Hawaii residents who have lost everything in the Maui fire. Thank you to everyone who volunteered and donated! The brother and sisterhood extends far beyond our breakwater and I’m so proud of your work.

LA REPAIR

No one knows better than our residents what resources our communities need. Through the LA Civil Rights' REPAIR Program, we're ensuring communities have decision making power over funding for programs they care about. This is equity being delivered. In Watts, our residents have voted to fund the Watts Empowerment Center to produce programming for our youth.

The second cohort will begin collecting ideas today that will soon be voted. I encourage everyone in the Gateway, Harbor City, and Wilmington to get involved in this process! Go to Repair.lacity.org for more information.

LA ANIMAL SERVICES

LA Animal Services and Pedro Pet Pals invite you to meet your new furry friend at the special dog adoption event tomorrow, August 13th from 11 AM to 2 PM. Pets adopted from LA Animal Services join their new families already spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and for LA City residents - licensed.

CONSTRUCTION APPRENTICE PROGRAM

The MC3 Construction Apprenticeship is coming soon! At the Harbor Occupational Center, come learn Apprenticeship Preparation, Hand & Power Tools, Introduction to Blueprint Reading Basics, and more! SUMMER NIGHT LIGHTS

Spend time outdoors as the warm evenings continue! Summer Night Lights at the Harbor Rec Center will run through August 25th on Friday and Saturday evenings.

SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING

Our office received a call regarding a mysterious water puddle. The water was tracked back to a business four blocks away. Our team got in touch with the property manager to let them know that the sprinklers were left on for 72 hours. If you see something, say something and our office will try to find a way to help.

POOL PARTY

Save the date! Our office is partnering with the Department of Rec and Parks for an end of summer pool party at the Harbor Pool. One-Five residents are welcome to join us September 2nd from 2-5 PM for music, food, activities, and games.

ALONDRA UNDERPASS CLEANUP

The Bureau of Sanitation helped clean up the Alondra underpass this week. Their crews were out late into the night closing out 311 tickets throughout the Gateway!

HALLDALE BACKPACK GIVEAWAY

Our office joined the Halldale Elementary School staff at their back to school event which included a backpack giveaway! All of the backpacks had a "Halldale" patch sewn on by the staff!

HARBOR GATEWAY SOUTH NC

The Harbor Gateway South Neighborhood Council was joined by Congresswoman Nanette Barragan this week for updates on her work in Washington D.C. fighting for her district! Additionally, our office and LAPD provided reports on what we’re up to in the Gateway South!

NEW MURAL AT WHITE POINT

White Point Nature Preserve has a new mural painted by the community! Designed by Tracy Negrete, the mural features local native plants and animals from our very own White Point. What a great way for our neighbors to come together by painting a mural to further beautify this space.

BEACON HOUSE

The Beacon House works to help men achieve recovery from alcoholism and addiction. This week we were honored to stand with Assemblymember Mike Gipson as he presented a $1.25 million State Budget check to the City of LA which will allow Beacon House to make capital improvements to its Bartlett Center, which houses its kitchen and cafeteria. The Bartlett Remodel will update equipment and fixtures and increase storage capacity, allowing the Beacon House to increase daily meals served to residents and unhoused neighbors by approximately 123%.

CANNOLI WITH THE COUNCILMEMBER

POINT FERMIN COMMUNITY MEETING

On Thursday we cut the ribbon with Mayor Karen Bass and Senator Steven Bradford at Children's Institute for the brand new Watts BusinessSource Center! This will be a place for future entrepreneurs and businesses to receive assistance directly in our community. Here the city will help you cultivate your business ideas to create jobs, wealth, and opportunities for yourself and the future generations. COFFEE WITH THE ASSEMBLYMEMBER AND COUNCILMEMBER

Thank you to everyone who came to our Coffee with the Assemblymember and Councilmember! It was a great opportunity to share with residents what our offices are working on individually and together. But most importantly, it was a space to hear your ideas about youth development, beautification in your communities, community safety, and so much more.

BACK TO SCHOOL GIVEAWAY

What a great turn out for the Sisters of Watts’ 8th Annual Back to School Giveaway. Over a thousand kids came out to get a new backpack for the school year and spend time with their neighbors at the street fair. They had everything - a rock climbing wall, barbers for haircuts, a video game trailer, and more! It was a perfect end of summer send off.

FEDERAL FUNDING IN WATTS

On Wednesday I joined the US Department of Transportation Assistant Secretary Christopher Coes at the Watts Towers to announce that Watts Rising will be a recipient of the Federal Infrastructure Bill’s RAISE grant program! This program makes investments in our streets, roadways and bridges to transform neighborhoods and promote active transportation. With this grant, the Wilmington Avenue Corridor will also receive funding for planning and construction, along with funding for the replacement of the Rainbow Bridge. I’m looking forward to seeing this funding uplift our One-Five communities.

NONPROFIT DAY

The East Side Riders Bike Club is organizing a Nonprofit Day event on Sunday, August 20th from 11 AM to 4 PM on 103rd Street between Success and Compton Ave. This is an incredible opportunity for our community serving organizations and residents of Watts to come together and share resources.

SUMMER NIGHT LIGHTS

Throughout the summer LAPD works with local partners to make each night of Summer Night Lights (SNL) fun and unique. On Wednesday, our office hosted a pizza night serving delicious slices to Wilmington families at WilHall Park!

YMCA BACKPACK GIVEAWAY

Last Friday, the YMCA Wilmington hosted their annual backpack giveaway! We distributed over 1,000 backpacks and brand new shoes for the new school year. Students were also able to receive vouchers for free haircuts from local barbershops and salons. As LAUSD classes are about to begin, I’m glad we were able to help the kids prepare to go back to school!

COACH MEMORIAL FUNDRAISER

This Sunday our community came out to raise money for the Quezada family with a carwash. You can also donate to the family’s GoFundMe here.

HARBOR CHRISTIAN CENTER

On Sunday I attended church at Harbor Christian Center with Pastor Louie Trevino. Harbor Christian Center, originally founded in 1930, has not only uplifted lives in the South Bay, but through their missionaries and live stream broadcast, has reached all 50 states and over 40 different countries. Thank you Pastor Tervino for welcoming me.

A BRIDGE HOME

On Thursday, I spoke before the Harbor Board of Commissioners in support of extending the A Bridge Home (ABH) site lease at Eubank. We cannot allow our most vulnerable Angelenos to die on our city’s streets as they wait for us to build and create housing. At the same time, we need to support the communities who have said yes to these interventions. However, I share the concerns of Wilmington residents regarding this ABH. Part of the promise of the ABH program was the augmentation of both sanitation and enforcement services for the neighborhoods in close proximity to the site.

The City failed in its commitments to the neighborhood. That is why I am working with Mayor Bass to work to fulfill these promises made to our communities including: cleaning the area surrounding the ABH, providing weekly CARE and CARE+ services, adding weekly street cleaning, more regular patrolling of the area, and working with outreach workers to address the motor homes across from the ABH. It’s important to me that the city works to regain the faith and trust of the neighbors while we work to help our unhoused neighbors.

MENTAL HEALTH WORKSHOPS

Every Wednesday, the LA County Department of Mental Health and Providence Community Health will be holding educational workshops on prevention and early intervention in mental health. These classes, held in Spanish, are a great resource and opportunity to learn about how to handle stress, understand the signs of depression, build resilience and more.

¡Este lunes nuestros niños se pondrán las mochilas, se amarrarán los zapatos y regresarán a la escuela! En el One-Five, una cosa está clara, nos preocupamos profundamente por nuestros hijos, brindándoles un espacio para crecer y enriquecerlos para un futuro próspero. Vimos eso de muchas maneras en las últimas semanas cuando nos reunimos para los obsequios de regreso a la escuela llenos de mochilas nuevas, zapatos e incluso cortes de cabello para que esten preparados.

Este verano ha estado lleno de nuestra comunidad reunida para ferias callejeras, barbacoas y picnics en nuestros parques del One-Five. Es importante que continuemos la programación para nuestros jóvenes durante todo el año. Ya sea que se trate de programas extracurriculares en nuestros centros juveniles locales o deportes extracurriculares, debemos continuar buscando y creando espacios para que nuestros niños prosperen.

También quiero tomar un momento para mencionar a los dos pasantes de verano en el One-Five: ¡Marveon Mabon y Ren MacMorran! Las “Zonas tranquilas” para los cruces de ferrocarril pueden presentarse de muchas formas y pueden establecerse después de implementar mejoras de seguridad que brinden el mismo nivel de reducción de riesgos que proporciona la bocina del tren. CAFÉ CON EL ASAMBLEISTA Y EL CONCEJAL

¡Gracias a todos los que vinieron a nuestro Café con el Asambleísta y el Concejal! Fue una gran oportunidad para compartir con los residentes en qué están trabajando nuestras oficinas individualmente y en conjunto. Pero lo más importante, fue un espacio para escuchar sus ideas sobre el desarrollo de la juventud, el embellecimiento de sus comunidades, la seguridad de la comunidad y mucho más.

ENTREGA DE MOCHILAS DE REGRESO A CLASES

Qué gran resultado obtuvo la Octava Entrega Anual de Mochilas de Regreso a la Escuela de Sisters of Watts. Más de mil niños recibieron una mochila nueva para el año escolar y pasaron tiempo con sus vecinos en la feria de la calle. ¡Lo tenían todo! ¡Un muro de escalada, peluqueros para cortes de cabello, un tráiler con videojuegos y más! Fue una despedida perfecta para el final del verano.

FINANCIAMIENTO FEDERAL EN WATTS

El miércoles me uní al subsecretario del Departamento de Transporte de Estados Unidos, Christopher Coes, en Watts Towers para anunciar que Watts Rising recibirá el programa de subvenciones RAISE del Proyecto de Ley Federal de Infraestructura. Este programa realiza inversiones en nuestras calles, carreteras y puentes para transformar vecindarios y promover el transporte activo. Con esta subvención, el Wilmington Avenue Corridor también recibirá fondos para la planificación y construcción, junto con fondos para el reemplazo del Rainbow Bridge. Espero ver que esta financiación mejore nuestras comunidades del One-Five.

¡El viernes pasado, el YMCA de Wilmington organizó su entrega anual de mochilas! Distribuimos más de 1,000 mochilas y zapatos nuevos para el nuevo año escolar. Los estudiantes también pudieron recibir cupones para cortes de cabello gratuitos de peluquerías y salones locales. ¡Falta poco más de una semana antes de que comiencen las clases de LAUSD y me alegro de haber podido ayudar a los niños a prepararse para volver a la escuela!

RECAUDACIÓN DE FONDOS PARA ENTRENADOR FALLECIDO

Este domingo nuestra comunidad salió a recaudar dinero para la familia Quezada con un lavado de autos. También puede donar al GoFundMe de la familia aquí.

CENTRO CRISTIANO HARBOR

El domingo asistí a la iglesia en Harbor Christian Center con el pastor Louie Treviño. Harbor Christian Center, originalmente fundado en 1930, no sólo ha elevado vidas en South Bay, sino que a través de sus misioneros y transmisión en vivo, ha llegado a los 50 estados y más de 40 países diferentes. A BRIDGE HOME

El jueves, hablé ante la Junta de Comisionados de Harbor a favor de extender el contrato de arrendamiento del sitio A Bridge Home (ABH) en Eubank. No podemos permitir que nuestros angelinos más vulnerables mueran en las calles de nuestra ciudad mientras esperan que construyamos y creemos viviendas. Al mismo tiempo, necesitamos apoyar a las comunidades que han dicho sí a estas intervenciones. Sin embargo, comparto las preocupaciones de los residentes de Wilmington con respecto a este ABH. Parte de la promesa del programa ABH fue el aumento de los servicios de saneamiento y cumplimiento para los vecindarios cercanos al sitio.

El Ayuntamiento no cumplió sus promesas con la comunidad. Es por eso que estoy trabajando con la alcaldesa Bass para trabajar para cumplir estas promesas hechas a nuestras comunidades. Esto incluye limpiar el área que rodea al ABH, brindar servicios semanales de CARE y CARE+, agregar limpieza semanal de calles, más patrullaje regular del área y trabajar con el personal de alcance para abordar los vehículos recreacionales frente al ABH. Es importante para mí que la ciudad trabaje para recuperar la fe y la confianza de los vecinos mientras trabajamos para ayudar a nuestros vecinos sin vivienda.

TALLERES DE SALUD MENTAL

Todos los miércoles, el Departamento de Salud Mental del Condado de Los Ángeles y Providence Community Health llevarán a cabo talleres educativos sobre prevención e intervención temprana en salud mental. Estas clases, impartidas en español, son un gran recurso y una oportunidad para aprender a manejar el estrés, comprender los signos de depresión, desarrollar resiliencia y más.
