August 11, 2023

Today, I was proud to recognize the 78th Anniversary of Korean Independence Day (known as Gwangbokjeol) with leaders from across our City. Celebrated on August 15, Gwangbokjeol commemorates Korean independence from colonial rule.

The Korean American experience is a reality because of the work of independence activists and so many who fought for Korean liberation. After 78 years, Korea is an world economic powerhouse and renowned as the world's sixth largest manufacturer and exporter. Korean history and culture is increasingly recognized across the country and has influenced all industries on the global stage.

The journey getting here has not been an easy one. I want to express my gratitude to all the incredible Koreans who paved the way for the next generations and to those who have stood with us on our journey- I have no doubt that our future will continue to shine brightly.

CD12 COMMUNITY UPDATES

This week, construction crews completed the replacement guardrail project on Woolsey Canyon Road between Valley Circle and the City boundary. The road here is mountainous and curved, and the previous guardrail had sustained significant damage in past accidents. At the request of a local resident, my office began work to improve safety conditions on this stretch of roadway. With the support and assistance of the Department of Public Works, my office identified funding to carry out this safety improvement and was able to help expeditiously move the project through to fruition.

West Nile Virus Alert

West Nile Virus has been detected in mosquitoes trapped in San Fernando Valley communities. West Nile Virus is transmitted to people and animals through the bite of an infected mosquito. Residents can do their part to reduce the threat of West Nile Virus by actively taking mosquito control measures: eliminate standing water, properly maintain pools and water features, wear insect repellent outdoors, and report neglected swimming pools to the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District. Click here for more information and prevention tips.

LADWP Outdoor Watering Update

After observing two-days-a-week outdoor watering restrictions for the past thirteen months, LADWP customers can begin watering outdoor landscapes for up to three-days-a-week. After experiencing a record snowpack, the return to the City's Phase 2 Emergency Water Conservation Ordinance was approved and effective July 27, 2023.

The return to three-days-a-week watering means customers with street addresses ending in odd-numbers may water on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and customers with even-numbered street addresses may water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m., when the evaporation rate is appreciably lower than during the middle of the day.

Click here for more information about current watering restrictions and water conservation programs.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Officer Alyssa Sanchez

This week’s Community Spotlight shines on Alyssa Sanchez, a dedicated and compassionate LAPD Officer with a profound passion for community service. Raised by her grandparents, she learned the value of love, empathy, and the importance of giving back from an early age. Alyssa's journey in public service began when she joined the LAPD in 2015. She worked as a patrol officer for the first five years of her career, and was later assigned to the Devonshire Community Relations unit. As a Youth Service Officer, she actively engages with the community, attending events, and nurturing positive relationships between law enforcement and the public.

She is assigned to the Greig Smith Youth Center, home to LAPD Devonshire PALS. Officer Sanchez says that she “lives and breathes PALS.” She became a mentor at PALS, where she creates engaging activities and provides academic support. Her dedication to empowering youth extends beyond mentoring, as she actively participates in fundraising and collaborates with organizations to improve the lives of underprivileged children.

With a heart for education, Officer Sanchez has worked with several organizations to bring more resources to the children at PALS. She is working on a school supply program, ensuring every child has the necessary tools to start the academic year with confidence. Officer Sanchez’s work with Shoes That Fit, a shoe donation organization ensuring low-income youth receive properly fitting shoes, is a testament to her commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of others. Her approachable nature, combined with a deep understanding of the community's struggles, has bridged the gap between officers and young people, changing perceptions and fostering trust.

As she looks to the future, Officer Sanchez strives to become a Senior Lead Officer with the LAPD. Her dedication, compassion, and relentless pursuit of positive change makes her an inspiring figure and a shining example of how one person's kindness can have a profound impact on our community. Thank you, Officer Sanchez, for serving the youth and the community of Council District 12!

WEEK IN REVIEW

Thank you to the community and local sponsors for partnering with LAFD, LAPD and me this past weekend at the St. Baldrick's Foundation Head Shaving Fundraiser in Porter Ranch. First responders had their heads shaved to help raise critical funds for kids with cancer, and the community's support helped to make this another successful event!
