This weekend we will join with one another to celebrate Labor Day! It is a time set apart to honor those in the labor movement who fight for workers’ rights and uplift the essential role workers play in our city.

The movement stems from the Industrial Revolution when the average American worker labored 12-hour days, seven days a week, and it wasn’t unusual to see young children doing difficult tasks in tough working conditions for very little pay. From there, trade unions began to form and fight for workers’ rights to fair pay, decent hours and safe working conditions.

Our unions built this city and I stand with workers in their demands for good jobs, better conditions, and fair contracts. Our workers’ skill, hard-work and solidarity are unparalleled and I’m honored to be in the fight with you every step of the way.

I hope to see you all on Monday at the 44th Annual Los Angeles/Long Beach Labor Day Parade and Rally in Wilmington. Let’s come together to celebrate the strength, and leadership of our Los Angeles workers and the labor movement.

As we head into Labor Day it’s important to talk about an issue impacting Los Angeles workers: Wage Theft. The crime of wage theft can include an employer paying below minimum wage, not paying overtime, not allowing meal or rest breaks, requiring off-the-clock work, or taking workers' tips. Employees in LA are disproportionately affected by wage theft at a higher rate when compared across the state.

The office of the LA City Attorney plays a role in investigating allegations of wage theft, and bringing civil or criminal enforcement actions. This office also has a dedicated team to advise and assist the LA Office of Wage Standards with administrative enforcement actions. In advance of Labor Day, I introduced a motion to pursue a thorough analysis of the capacity and needs of the Office of Wage Standards so that the City can do a better job investigating complaints and holding employers accountable.

Yesterday, I also presented a motion with my colleague Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez to expand on my motion and look into how we can increase enforcement on wage theft for some of the most common forms of violations including overtime, meal breaks, rest breaks, and withholding tips. Wage theft is rampant in Los Angeles and it’s time for the city to step up and do everything in our ability to protect our workers. We cannot allow business owners to prey on their lower-wage employees simply because owners and operators think they will not be held accountable. We’re here to make the system work and stand up for our hard-working Angelenos.

CLEAN 15 HIGHLIGHTS

REPORTING STREET LIGHTS

Our team took an evening drive through Wilmington, Harbor City and the Harbor Gateway looking out for non-working street lights. We reported all of the light poles that we found along our route. The team plans to make monthly night drives throughout the One-Five to check on the status of street lights in the district. If you know of lights that are out, please reach out to our office.

CHILD CARE POLICY AND EQUITY

The City of Los Angeles’ Community Investment For Families Department (CIFD), has launched the Child Care Policy and Equity unit to increase opportunities for the over 200,000 children ages 0-5 currently living in the City. The unit helps families access high-quality child care and supports providers in strengthening their businesses.

To help them design resources that meet the needs of our City’s families, we ask you to take a brief, 5-minute child care survey and share your experiences with finding and paying for care. Click here to take the survey.

L.A. REPAIR

Calling all Harbor Gateway, Harbor City, and Wilmington residents! L.A. REPAIR is inviting you to participate in the idea collection stage of their participatory budgeting program. We want to hear directly from YOU about the changes and improvements you want to see in your communities!

END OF SUMMER POOL PARTY

Join us today at the Harbor Pool for an end of summer pool party we’re hosting with the Department of Recreation and Parks. One-Five residents are welcome to join us today from 2-5 PM for music, food, activities, and games.

PEACE RIDE

On Sunday, I joined the Los Angeles Chapter of Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice for their 2nd annual Peace Ride, followed by a picnic and community celebration at Harbor City Recreation Center. With over 70,000 members, Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice is building a movement to create spaces to heal together and promote public safety policies that help the people and communities most harmed by crime and violence. By supporting one another, we work to break the cycle of trauma and build a stronger community of love and support.

NORMANDALE ADULT LUNCHES

Monday through Friday at 10:30 AM, Normandale Recreation Center provides lunches for those 60 years and older. Stop by to pick up your lunch brought to you by the Department of Aging.

COMMUNITY CLEAN UP

Last weekend our office provided dumpsters for a community cleanup in the Harbor Gateway North. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped fill up the bins, as well as leaving the underpass under Stanford Ave. clean and safe!

186TH ST. BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT

LAUSD schools across the district are back in action, and this week our office joined 186th Street Elementary to help kick off school pride by hosting a Back to School Night for parents to meet the teachers, visit their student's classrooms, and receive One-Five resources from our team!

LA REPAIR OUTREACH

This week representatives from the Department of Civil + Human Rights’ Repair Advisory Committee were in Harbor Gateway collecting input on ideas for their participatory budgeting program. If you would like to share your voice, please go to https://repair.lacity.gov/ to learn more!

CANNOLIS WITH THE COUNCILMEMBER

Thank you to everyone who attended our San Pedro Town Hall: “Cannolis with the Councilmember” edition at the Grand Annex. It was great to provide updates on what’s going on in our office, like the Clean 15 Team, the Western Ave. tree planting and park projects, as well as gain insight from you on the issues important to you. There’s a lot of work to be done but I’m glad to have you all as partners.

PASEO DEL MAR CLEAN UP

This week, with the help of the LA Conservation Corps, our Clean 15 crew tackled the overgrown vegetation and weeds on the corner of Paseo Del Mar and Western Ave. Many constituents have called inquiring about this location and we are pleased to have gotten the job done!

LEGENDS CAR SHOW

Growing up in the Harbor, there’s an incredible car culture that we were raised to love and appreciate. Last weekend at Point Fermin we had a great turnout for the Legends Car Show. This fundraiser allows the Legends to raise money to support the local organizations in our community and beyond including Wounded Warriors, Boys & Girls Club, and more! A special shout out to Lou, Ambrose, and Mark for their dedication to putting on such an amazing event year after year.

WATTS HEALTHCARE

Breaking down barriers to accessing healthcare is crucial. On Monday, I joined LA Sparks’ Jasmine Thomas from Ballin’ For A Cure to check out the Watts Healthcare mobile screening bus. Black women under 35 get breast cancer at twice the rate and die at three times the rate of white women – that is why early detection can be life saving. I’m grateful to Watts Healthcare for their mobile van to give screenings directly in the community.

NONPROFIT DAY

The One-Five has so many incredible nonprofits. They’re led, driven, and composed of our neighbors working to better our own community. Last Saturday, the East Side Riders Bike Club organized a Nonprofit Day for our community serving organizations and residents of Watts to come together and share information and resources. Great work by John Jones to pull this together.

COMMUNITY ACTIVISM RECOGNITION

I was honored to be asked to MC an event this week at Imperial Courts where the local chapter of the NAACP awarded Dr. Perry Crouch a Historical Award into the Hall of Fame for his 43 Years of Community Activism. The event was shared with leaders of many surrounding chapters of the NAACP and Watts leaders who he had impacted in his career. It was an honor to be a part of the celebration.

POSITIVE VIBES POP-UP

Twice a month in front of Home + Treasures, Olga Diaz hosts the Positive Vibes Pop Up event showcasing a variety of vendors from food to artisans. It’s a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Follow Home + Treasures so you know when the next one is, especially if they have Naught Dogz again because that Bacon-Wrapped Hot Dog was unbelievable!

COFFEE WITH THE PRINCIPAL

This week my team joined Principal Steven Skrumbis of Harry Bridges Span Elementary for Coffee With A Principal. It was a great opportunity to meet with parents and discuss community issues.

STREET RESURFACING

Yesterday through Thursday, September 7th, the Bureau of Street Services will work to repave Q St. between Lakme Ave. and Avalon Blvd. During the first phase (9/1), vehicles will have access but parking will be prohibited. During the second phase (9/5-7), vehicle access and parking will be prohibited. Temporary no parking signs will be posted at least 24 hours prior to work.

Este fin de semana nos reuniremos para celebrar el Día del Trabajo. Un día para honrar a aquellos en el movimiento laboral que lucharon por los derechos de los trabajadores y elevan el papel esencial que desempeñan los trabajadores en nuestra ciudad.

El feriado surge de la Revolución Industrial, cuando el estadounidense promedio trabajaba 12 horas al día, siete días a la semana, y no era inusual ver a niños pequeños realizando trabajos difíciles en duras condiciones laborales por poco dinero. A partir de ahí, los sindicatos comenzaron a formarse y luchar por los derechos de los trabajadores a un salario justo, horarios justos y condiciones laborales seguras.

Nuestros sindicatos construyeron nuestra ciudad y apoyan a los trabajadores en sus demandas de buenos empleos, contratos justos y mejores salarios. La habilidad, el trabajo duro y la solidaridad de nuestros trabajadores no tienen paralelo y es un honor para mí estar en la lucha con ustedes en cada paso del camino.

A medida que nos acercamos al Día del Trabajo, es importante hablar sobre un problema que enfrentan los trabajadores de Los Ángeles: el robo de salarios. El robo de salarios puede incluir: pagar menos del salario mínimo, no pagar horas extras a los trabajadores, no permitir que los trabajadores tomen descansos para comer y descansar, exigir trabajo fuera del horario laboral o aceptar las propinas de los trabajadores. Los empleados en Los Ángeles se ven afectados desproporcionadamente por el delito de robo de salarios a un ritmo más alto en comparación con todo el estado, lo que lleva a Los Ángeles a ser históricamente apodado como "capital de robo de salarios".

La Oficina del Fiscal Municipal desempeña un papel en la investigación de acusaciones de robo de salarios y otras violaciones laborales, y en el inicio de acciones de ejecución civiles o penales cuando corresponda. Ayer, también presenté una moción con mi colega, el concejal Hugo Soto-Martínez, para ampliar aún más mi moción anterior y analizar cómo podemos aumentar la aplicación de medidas contra el robo de salarios en algunas de las formas más conocidas de infracciones, incluidas las horas extra, las pausas para comer y los descansos cortos y retención de propinas. Estas mociones serán escuchadas en el próximo Comité de Derechos Civiles, Equidad e Inmigración.

INFORMES DE LUCES DE LA CALLE

Nuestro equipo realizó un recorrido nocturno por Wilmington, Harbor City y Harbor Gateway en busca de farolas que no funcionan. Informamos de todos los postes de luz que encontramos a lo largo de nuestra ruta. El equipo planea realizar recorridos nocturnos mensuales por el One-Five para verificar el estado del alumbrado público en el distrito.

POLÍTICA DE CUIDADO INFANTIL Y EQUIDAD

El Departamento de Inversión Comunitaria para Familias (CIFD) de la Ciudad de Los Ángeles ha lanzado la unidad de Política y Equidad en el Cuidado Infantil para aumentar las oportunidades para los más de 200,000 niños de 0 a 5 años que actualmente viven en la ciudad. La unidad ayuda a las familias a acceder a cuidado infantil de alta calidad y apoya a los proveedores para fortalecer sus negocios.

ALMUERZOS PARA ADULTOS EN NORMANDALE

De lunes a viernes a las 10:30 a. m., el Centro recreativo Normandale ofrece almuerzos para personas mayores de 60 años. Pase a recoger el almuerzo que le trajo el Departamento de Envejecimiento.

LIMPIEZA COMUNITARIA

El fin de semana pasado, nuestra oficina proporcionó contenedores de basura para una limpieza comunitaria en Harbor Gateway North. ¡Gracias a todos los que asistieron y ayudaron a llenar los contenedores, así como a dejar el paso subterráneo debajo de Stanford Ave. limpio, seguro y hermoso!

NOCHE DE REGRESO A CLASES

¡Las escuelas del LAUSD en todo el distrito están nuevamente en acción, y esta semana la Escuela Primaria 186th Street ayudó a iniciar el orgullo escolar al organizar una Noche de Regreso a Clases para que los padres conocieran a los maestros y visitaran los salones de clases de sus estudiantes, y reciba recursos One-Five de nuestro equipo!

CANNOLI CON EL CONCEJAL

Gracias a todos los que asistieron a nuestro Ayuntamiento de San Pedro: edición “Cannolis con el Concejal” en el Gran Annex. Fue fantástico brindar actualizaciones sobre lo que está sucediendo en nuestra oficina, como el equipo Clean 15, la planta de árboles y los proyectos de parques de Western Ave., así como también obtener información sobre los temas importantes para ustedes. Hay mucho trabajo por hacer, pero me alegro de tenerlos a todos como socios.

LIMPIEZA DE PASEO DEL MAR

ATENCIÓN MÉDICA EN WATTS

Derribar las barreras para acceder a la atención sanitaria es crucial. El lunes, me uní a Jasmine Thomas de LA Sparks de Ballin’ For A Cure para ver el autobús de detección móvil de Watts Healthcare. Las mujeres negras menores de 35 años padecen cáncer de mama con una tasa dos veces mayor y mueren con una tasa tres veces mayor que las mujeres blancas, por lo que la detección temprana puede salvar vidas. Agradezco a Watts Healthcare por su camioneta móvil para realizar exámenes de detección directamente en la comunidad.

DÍA DE LAS ORGANIZACIONES SIN FINES DE LUCRO

The One-Five tiene tantas organizaciones sin fines de lucro increíbles. Están dirigidos, impulsados y compuestos por nuestros vecinos que trabajan para mejorar nuestra propia comunidad. El sábado, el East Side Riders Bike Club organizó un Día de organizaciones sin fines de lucro para que nuestras organizaciones de servicio comunitario y los residentes de Watts se reunieran y compartieran información y recursos. RECONOCIMIENTO AL ACTIVISMO COMUNITARIO

Tuve el honor de que me pidieran que fuera el anfitrión de un evento esta semana en Imperial Courts, donde el capítulo local de la NAACP otorgó al Dr. Perry Crouch un Premio Histórico al Salón de la Fama por sus 43 años de activismo comunitario. Una excelente manera de pasar un domingo por la tarde. Sigue a Home + Treasures para saber cuándo será el próximo, ¡especialmente si tienen Naught Dogz nuevamente porque ese hot dog envuelto en tocino estuvo increíble!

CAFÉ CON EL DIRECTOR

Esta semana mi equipo se unió al director de la escuela primaria Steven Skrumbis, Harry Bridges Span, para tomar un café con el director. Fue una gran oportunidad para reunirse con los padres y discutir temas comunitarios.

RENOVACIÓN DE CALLES

Del viernes 1 de septiembre al 7 de septiembre, la Oficina de Servicios Callejeros trabajará para repavimentar Q St. entre Lakme Ave. y Avalon Blvd. Durante la primera fase (1/9), los vehículos tendrán acceso pero estará prohibido el estacionamiento. Durante la segunda fase (5/9-7) se prohibirá el acceso y estacionamiento de vehículos. Se publicarán señales temporales de prohibido estacionarse al menos 24 horas antes del trabajo.
