The One-Five has many incredible nonprofits. From youth programming, to community gardening, to health awareness - our nonprofits both care for and uplift each of our communities.
These nonprofits exemplify the best of us. Led, driven, and composed of our neighbors working to better our own community. They give us a space to carry out our dreams and shape them into on the ground realities.
Nonprofit work is incredibly hard, but worth the effort. The results like seeing kids flourish in your programs, being able to eat the fruit you grew in your neighborhood’s garden, and giving people lifesaving health resources, is unparalleled.
I’m appreciative of the East Side Riders Bike Club for organizing a Nonprofit Day event today, August 26th now until 3 PM at 1513 E. 103rd St. This is an incredible opportunity for our community serving organizations and residents of Watts to come together and share resources.

On Wednesday, the Council passed my motion for a report on workplace conditions for the catering employees who provide in-flight airline meals at Los Angeles International Airport. Employees of Flying Food Group launched an unfair labor practice strike in April demanding that they have been underpaid and in danger of losing their health benefits.
Our city’s laws are very clear about what our workforce should be paid and if a major company like Flying Food Group is going to ignore this, the city should right the wrong and step in to protect workers. I look forward to hearing from the Bureau of Contract Administration, which enforces the Living Wage Ordinance, with the help of the Los Angeles World Airport and the City Attorney report on any enforcement actions taken to Flying Food Group, on alleged wage violations and any pending enforcement actions. |

UCLA STUDENT LEADERSHIP ACADEMY |

The UCLA Student Leadership Academy is an immersive program providing UCLA undergraduate students the opportunity to expand their capacity for and understanding of leadership. On Saturday, I met with the students at the new UCLA residential campus in San Pedro, on Palos Verdes Drive North, to discuss my career journey. I hope I could share some insight and inspiration to a class full of future Councilmembers! |

Next Monday, September 4th we’ll be at the 44th annual Los Angeles/Long Beach Labor Day Parade and Rally. Let’s come together to celebrate the strength, and leadership of our Los Angeles workers and the labor movement. |

SOCAL GAS |

In a recent update, SoCalGas employees who visit customers’ homes for collection purposes, as of August 23, are no longer accepting cash, checks, or money orders for the payment of bills. However, SoCalGas can assist customers in paying their bill through a variety of options on their website. Customers can also pay in person at SoCalGas payment offices, or pay by phone, email, direct debit, debit/credit card, or home banking.
Additionally, SoCalGas continues to provide assistance options to avoid disconnections, including extended payment plans and debt forgiveness through the Arrearage Management Plan. |

POOL PARTY |

Join us next Saturday as our office is partnering with the Department of Rec and Parks for an end of summer pool party at the Harbor Pool. One-Five residents are welcome to join us September 2nd from 2-5 PM for music, food, activities, and games. |

TRASH BIN COLLECTION |

After receiving calls of a long stain emitting a foul odor in the Narbonne area; we discovered it was caused by Sanitation trucks emptying leaky trash bins. When we experience heavy rains please remove any standing water before putting them out for collection. Our office has contacted the Bureau Sanitation and they will be sending a street sweeper to clean the stains on the streets. |

POWER OUTAGES AFTER HILARY |

With the tropical storm hitting Los Angeles earlier this week, LADWP was out in full force addressing power outages in CD15, including the Harbor Gateway. Crews were out day and night repairing any damaged electrical lines. |

REMOVING FALLEN TREE LIMBS |

The windy conditions this weekend posed a hazard when it came to trees. Many tree limbs fell and blocked driveways. However, the Bureau of Street Services and its Urban Forestry Division played an integral role in responding rapidly to all the service requests received during the week. |

ILLEGAL DUMPING CLEAN UP |

Please keep reporting any trash and illegal dumping onto 311 so that the Department of Sanitation can address it. This week we worked with them to clean underneath the 105th on San Pedro St. |

FLOODING ON 5TH & GAFFEY |

We are aware of the flooding that is continuing on the corner of 5th & Gaffey St on the southbound side for the past few days. We have sent LASAN trucks to pump the water out multiple times each day since Monday, we also had LAFD come out to make sure the water was not contaminated, which it is not. We are working with LA County to fix any pipe issues that are causing this to occur. |

OLD FIREBOAT NO. 2 |

On Thursday evening, I joined LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley to celebrate the grand re-introduction of the legendary LAFD Ralph J. Scott Old Fireboat No. 2! We learned about the rich history and it was an incredible opportunity to look up close at this iconic fireboat, which has played a vital role in safeguarding Los Angeles for many years. |

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB WORKFORCE |

This week we celebrated the grand opening of the Boys & Girls Club of the LA Harbor’s new workforce development center. This center provides pathways to success for young adults ages 18-24 access to services such as resume writing, mock interviews, and employment referrals. The new center is located at 1200 S. Carrillo Ave. |

Last weekend I met with community members and LASAN to focus on proactive illegal dumping cleanup efforts. It was incredibly helpful to our office and served as a valuable resource as we continue to roll out our Clean 15 Program. |

COFFEE WITH A COP |

Our office attended Coffee with a Cop yesterday with the Southeast Division officers. It was a great opportunity for community members to get to know their local officers and learn about resources our city offers. |

Tuesday we celebrated the grand opening of Kinecta at Freedom Plaza. This credit union will be right here in our community to provide accessible banking to our residents. |

On Saturday I attended the Phineas Banning Birthday Celebration at the historic Banning Museum. There was an all-American cookout, jitterbug lessons, and live music by Big Lucky Band! Congratulations to the 2023 Phineas Banning Entrepreneurial Spirit Award Recipient, Olga Diaz, owner of Home + Treasures! |

On Thursday our office teamed up with SBCC to remove palm fronds from the street on Avalon between Anaheim and Opp St. You can continue to report debris to MY311LA and you can also call our district office and we’ll send out our Clean 15 Team. |

On Wednesday we attended the presentation of a check for $1.5 Million from Congresswoman Barragan to LA Cleantech Incubator for the installation of a charging station on the corner of I and Alameda St. for electric trucks. |

El miércoles, el Consejo aprobó mi moción para un informe sobre las condiciones laborales de los empleados de catering que proporcionan comidas a bordo de las aerolíneas en el Aeropuerto Internacional de Los Ángeles. Los empleados de Flying Food Group comenzaron una huelga por prácticas laborales injustas en abril enfatizando que se les estaba pagando muy mal y estaban en peligro de perder sus beneficios de salud.
Las leyes de nuestra ciudad son muy claras sobre lo que se le debe pagar a nuestra fuerza laboral y si una empresa importante como Flying Food Group va a ignorar esto, la ciudad debería corregir el error e intervenir para proteger a los trabajadores. Espero recibir noticias de la Oficina de Administración de Contratos, que hace cumplir la Ordenanza de Salario Digno, con la ayuda del Aeropuerto Mundial de Los Ángeles y los informes del Fiscal de la Ciudad sobre cualquier acción de cumplimiento tomada a Flying Food Group,sobre presuntas violaciones salariales y cualquier acción de cumplimiento pendiente. |

En una actualización reciente, los empleados de SoCalGas que visitan los hogares de los clientes con fines de cobranza, desde el 23 de agosto, ya no están aceptando efectivo, cheques ni giros postales para el pago de facturas. Sin embargo, SoCalGas puede ayudar a los clientes a pagar su factura a través de una variedad de opciones en su sitio web. Los clientes también pueden pagar en persona en las oficinas de pago de SoCalGas, o pagar por teléfono, correo electrónico, débito directo, tarjeta de débito/crédito o banca desde casa.

Cuando experimentemos fuertes lluvias, elimine el agua estancada antes de sacarlas para su recolección. Nuestra oficina se ha puesto en contacto con LA Sanitation y enviarán un barrendero para limpiar las manchas en las calles. |

Estamos conscientes de las inundaciones que continúan en la esquina de 5th y Gaffey St en el lado sur durante los últimos días. Hemos enviado camiones LASAN para bombear el agua varias veces al día desde el lunes, también hicimos que LAFD saliera para asegurarnos de que el agua no estuviera contaminada, lo cual no es así. Esta semana celebramos la gran inauguración del nuevo centro de desarrollo laboral del Boys & Girls Club del puerto de Los Ángeles. Este centro brinda caminos hacia el éxito para adultos jóvenes de 18 a 24 años con acceso a servicios como redacción de currículums, entrevistas simuladas y referencias laborales. El nuevo centro está ubicado en 1200 S. Carrillo Ave. |

El fin de semana pasado me reuní con miembros de la comunidad y LASAN para centrarme en los esfuerzos proactivos de limpieza de vertidos ilegales. Fue increíblemente útil para nuestra oficina y sirvió como un recurso valioso mientras continuamos implementando nuestro Programa Clean 15. |

CAFÉ CON LA POLICÍA |

Nuestra oficina asistió ayer a Café con la Policía con los oficiales de la División Sureste. Fue una gran oportunidad para que los miembros de la comunidad conocieran a sus funcionarios locales y aprendieran sobre los recursos que ofrece nuestra ciudad. |
