Yesterday marked the start of Latino Heritage Month, a time when we celebrate our Latino communities and the contributions they have made in shaping the One-Five and the City of Los Angeles.

It’s a time when we honor the Latino/a community members who have made a difference in the One-Five by empowering and expanding opportunities in this city so our Latino/a residents can thrive. Take time this month to uplift their stories and commit to standing with our Latino/a neighbors.

We kicked off Latino Heritage Month with an inspirational and fun El Grito celebration at City Hall. El Grito honors the courage of Miguel Hidalgo and countless other heroes who, 213 years ago, stood up and fought for Mexico’s Independence. The message of El Grito still resonates today–the enduring fight for equality, justice, freedom, community, and love of the place we call home.

Yesterday also began the High Holy Days for our Jewish friends and family. I want to wish all those who are celebrating Rosh Hashanah this weekend throughout the One-Five and Los Angeles, a happy, healthy, and sweet new year. L’ Shana Tova!

Major policy can lead to life changing programming. Thanks to the funding from Measure ULA, the City Council approved a new Emergency Renters Assistance Program that will be launching on Tuesday, September 19th.

This program will provide up to six months of rental arrears to low-income residential renters who are at the risk of homelessness due to unpaid rent as a result of COVID-19 or other financial hardship. See the eligibility requirements on the flyer above. You can apply online at housing.lacity.org anytime between 8 AM September 19th and 6 PM October 2nd.

I also introduced a motion to see how small mom-and-pop landlords with 12 units or less, can apply for rental assistance in the case an eligible tenant has not applied for rental relief. The council passed this motion and this application period will be coming soon!

UPDATES

CLEAN 15 HIGHLIGHTS

Our team was out this week in each of our 5 communities cleaning up piles of illegal dumping. Check out these Before and Afters of the work in Watts and Wilmington!

Also, my office has been working since early July to get the weeds along Western Ave. removed by Caltrans. I'm happy to share that Caltrans was out on Wednesday and Thursday working on 1st to 9th St. in San Pedro weeding the medians. Our Clean 15 Team was also out this week with LACC to continue the clean up from Weymouth to 25th.

WEST NILE VIRUS UPDATE

West Nile is the most common mosquito-borne disease that affects residents in Los Angeles County. Public health agencies detect West Nile virus every year in LA County which means it's endemic and found naturally in our city environments. The best ways to prevent contracting this virus are to prevent mosquitoes from breeding and protect against mosquito bites. See the fact sheet above for more information on how to stay safe.

LA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

On Tuesday, I met with leaders of the LA Area Chamber of Commerce to discuss issues of importance from small businesses, workers rights, environmental sustainability and economic vitality in our City. I look forward to working with them on policies that will help Angelenos thrive.

POLAHS ACTIVISM

On Labor Day we sponsored a bus to take the Port of Los Angeles High School students to our Harbor Labor Day Parade! It was incredible to see young students marching for environmental justice and a cleaner, greener world. Thank you to Rachel Bruhnke for organizing your class and empowering them to take such an important stand!

HEAL THE BAY

Next Saturday, September 23 at 10 AM, we’ll be at Cabrillo Beach for the Heal the Bay Coastal Cleanup! Join thousands of volunteers from Los Angeles County in this statewide movement to remove trash and marine bound debris from Summit to Sea. In 2022 alone, 4,583 Heal the Bay volunteers gathered across LA County to remove 11,298 pounds of trash and 313 pounds of recyclables from our watersheds, neighborhoods, and coastline. COMMUNITY PLAN

The proposed Harbor LA Community Plan has been released with a new video series that discusses the new zoning in the Harbor Gateway, Wilmington, and Harbor City communities. The new zoning is a tailored approach to meet the needs and vision for each neighborhood. You can watch the zoning tutorials, check out the interactive Harbor LA StoryMap and review the draft code pages. The Planning Department will also be hosting Virtual and In-Person Office Hours this September. Sign up to learn more or share your thoughts and questions about the new proposed zoning.

L.A. REPAIR

Calling all Harbor Gateway, Harbor City, and Wilmington residents! L.A. REPAIR is inviting you to participate in the idea collection stage of their participatory budgeting program. We want to hear directly from YOU about the changes and improvements you want to see in your communities!

GREEN MEADOWS POTLUCK

On Saturday afternoon I attended the Green Meadows Potluck Garden Party in Harbor City. It was so nice catching up with folks and meeting new families that have moved to the neighborhood. From the Hawaiian Fried Chicken to the conversation - it was a great event! Thank you to Tom and Cathy Houston for hosting a wonderful day of food and neighbors.

MOSQUITO HOTLINE

Calls regarding mosquitos prompted our team to contact LA County Vector Control to inspect the Harbor City Greenway. After a thorough investigation, it was determined that the water in the greenway is filled with mosquitofish which feed off of mosquitoes and keeps the area clear. If you are having trouble with mosquitoes around your home please contact Greater LA County Vector Control - find your agency here.

CLEARING PINE NEEDLES

This week GAP cleared the pine needles on Western Ave from 247th St. to 242nd Pl. After the hurricane and recent rain there was an abundance of pine needles along our roads so we called GAP to help provide us with extra support to keep our streets clean.

REPLACING STREET SIGNS

Thank you to the Department of Transportation for replacing signs that were damaged along Western Ave. If you see a damaged or missing sign you can report it on the 311 app under transportation/ traffic device maintenance/ signs.

116TH COFFEE WITH A PRINCIPAL

Our team joined the parents of 116th Elementary School this week for their monthly Coffee with a Principal, where parents received updates from the school on all the wonderful activities and programming the school is offering, as well updates from LAPD and our office on what we are working on in the community!

UNDERPASS LIGHTING

Underpass lighting has been a big focus for our office and we have been working with the Bureau of Street Lighting to address lighting deficiencies. The lighting underneath the 105 Fwy. on San Pedro St. was restored recently, and has been upgraded to be much brighter!

CalTrans has been a very active partner in the Harbor Gateway over the past year. Working together with our different overlapping governmental bodies is very important to us, so we recognized CalTrans District 7 for all their hard work and commitment to the community!

ANGELS GATE PARK PLAYGROUND RE-OPENING

Today we’ll be cutting the ribbon on the grand re-opening of Angels Gate Park playground. We’ve worked with the Department of Recreation and Parks to update the park with brand new equipment including slides, a crossing bridge and even some musical instruments!

PIAZZA MIRAMARE

We counted down to construction on Piazza Miramare on Thursday! What will be a beautiful European-style piazza by the San Pedro waterfront, will be an incredible place for residents and visitors to have coffee, meet up, and spend time outdoors. Thank you to the Little Italy of Los Angeles Association for being such great partners in the Harbor and to my predecessor Councilmember Joe Busciano for everything he did for the lead up to this moment!

ELECTRIFICATION PARTNERSHIP

This week I attended the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator's (LACI) Quarterly Transportation Electrification Partnership Meeting where we took a site visit to the EV car share program and the companion electric bike share pilot at Rancho San Pedro. It’s so great to have a partner like LACI that is looking at transportation as an equity issue and opportunity to advance environmental justice in our community through electric bikes and cars for the residents of Rancho San Pedro.

AYSO REGION 6 SOCCER

On Saturday we were at the Field of Dreams for a ribbon cutting on AYSO’s return to the facility, where 600 young soccer players will compete this Fall, making memories and having good, healthy fun. I have such incredible memories cheering on our 5 kids at this field and it’s so great that our Harbor Area families will be able to have the same experience Connie and I enjoyed.

SAN PEDRO RECOVERY ALLIANCE OPENING

We are at our best when we’re connecting with and supporting one another. This weekend was the grand opening of the San Pedro Recovery Alliance (SPRA) office on S. Pacific Avenue. Catalina Hinojosa and her nonprofit organization are committed to providing assistance to the unhoused and those affected with addiction to obtain long-term stability by providing connections to housing, treatment services, skills and potential job placement.

MOTHERS IN MOURNING MARCH

Thank you to Assemblymember Mike Gipson for hosting the Mothers in Mourning March last Saturday. We came together as a community to stand with those who have experienced loss and rally against gun violence.

100 YEARS OF JORDAN HIGH

As many of you know Jordan High School will be turning 100 years old on September 30th and rightfully so we’ll be having a celebration to honor all of those who have come through the school. There will be food, refreshments as well as many community partners with information regarding their organizations.

WATTS TOWERS DAY OF THE DRUM FESTIVAL

Save the date! On Saturday, September 30th will be the 41st Annual Watts Towers Day of the Drum Festival and the next day will be the 46th Annual Simon Rodia Watts Towers Jazz Festival. The events will run from 10 AM - 6 PM and it is free of charge. For more information see the flyer above.

PRAYER WALK

After the tragic death of Jose “Coach” Quezada, our Wilmington community vowed that we would not let horrific acts like that tear our community and sense of safety apart. On Saturday morning, we continued that promise and the Harbor Christian Center hosted a Prayer Walk from the church to the Waterfront Park to bring peace and healing to the community. Being there with one another, you felt the strength and love of our Wilmington residents and I was honored to be a part of it.

THANKING CITY STAFF

This weekend I stopped by East Wilmington Greenbelt Park to thank the LA City staff that cleaned up the graffiti and park to make the LA Civil Rights Department’s REPAIR outreach event a success!

WILMINGTON SIN FRONTERAS

This week my team met with Wilmington Sin Fronteras, a Neighborhood Action Council (NAC) group from the nonprofit SBCC. Wilmington Sin Fronteras mission is to provide resources for those in need in the community. The group meets every Tuesday from 8:30-10:30 AM. at SBCC 540 N. Marine Ave. Stop by!

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE WALK

Throughout the world, September 21st is known as the Day of Peace, a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence. Join us as we march from the Wilmington Municipal Building to the Heart of the Harbor SBCC Farm and advocate for peace in our community.

Ayer también comienzan las Fiestas Mayores para nuestros amigos y familiares judíos. Quiero desearles a todos aquellos que celebran Rosh Hashaná este fin de semana en One-Five y Los Ángeles un feliz, saludable y dulce año nuevo. ¡La Shana Tova!

Una políza importante puede llevar a una programación que cambie vidas. Gracias a los fondos de la Medida ULA, el Concejo Municipal aprobó un nuevo Programa de Asistencia de Emergencia para Inquilinos que se lanzará el martes 19 de septiembre.

Este programa proporcionará hasta seis meses de atrasos de alquiler a inquilinos residenciales de bajos ingresos que corren el riesgo de quedarse sin hogar debido al alquiler impago como resultado de COVID-19 u otras dificultades financieras. Consulte los requisitos de elegibilidad en el folleto de arriba. Puede presentar su solicitud en línea en housing.lacity.org en cualquier momento entre las 8 a. m. del 19 de septiembre y las 6 p. m. del 2 de octubre.

Además, mi oficina ha estado trabajando desde principios de julio para que Caltrans elimine las malas hierbas de Western Ave. Me complace compartirles que Caltrans estuvo disponible el miércoles y jueves trabajando en las calles 1ra a 9 limpiando los pavimentos en San Pedro. Nuestro equipo #Clean15 también estuvo esta semana con LACC para continuar la limpieza desde Weymouth hasta el día 25.

ACTUALIZACIÓN DEL VIRUS DEL NILO OCCIDENTAL

El Nilo Occidental es una enfermedad transmitida por mosquitos que afecta a los residentes del condado de Los Ángeles. LA CÁMARA DE COMERCIO

ACTIVISMO POLAHS

¡El Día del Trabajo patrocinamos un autobús para llevar a los estudiantes de la escuela secundaria del Puerto de Los Ángeles a nuestro Desfile del Día del Trabajo en el Puerto! Fue increíble ver a jóvenes estudiantes marchar por la justicia ambiental y un mundo más limpio y verde. ¡Gracias a Rachel Bruhnke por organizar su clase y capacitarlas para adoptar una postura tan importante!

SANAR LA BAHÍA

¡El próximo sábado 23 de septiembre a las 10 a. m., estaremos en Cabrillo Beach para la limpieza costera de Heal the Bay! PLAN COMUNITARIO

POTLUCK DE GREEN MEADOWS

El sábado por la tarde asistí a la fiesta compartida en el jardín de Green Meadows en Harbor City. Fue muy agradable conectar con la gente y conocer nuevas familias que se mudaron al vecindario. Desde el pollo frito hawaiano hasta las conversaciones. ¡fue un gran evento! Gracias a Tom y Cathy Houston por organizar un maravilloso día de comida y vecinos.

LÍNEA DIRECTA DE MOSQUITOS

Las llamadas relacionadas con mosquitos llevaron a nuestro equipo a comunicarse con el control de vectores para inspeccionar Harbor City Greenway. Después de una investigación, se determinó que el agua de la vía verde está llena de peces mosquito que se alimentan de mosquitos y mantienen el área limpia. CAFÉ CON EL DIRECTOR

Nuestro equipo se unió a los padres de la Escuela Primaria 116 esta semana para su Café mensual con el Director, donde los padres recibieron actualizaciones de la escuela sobre todas las maravillosas actividades y programas que ofrece la escuela, así como actualizaciones de LAPD y nuestra oficina sobre lo que estamos trabajando en la comunidad!

ILUMINACIÓN DEL PASO SUBTERRÁNEO

La iluminación del paso subterráneo ha sido un gran enfoque para nuestra oficina y hemos estado trabajando con la Oficina de Bureau of Street Lighting para abordar las deficiencias de iluminación. La iluminación debajo del paso subterráneo de la calle San Pedro fue restaurada recientemente y se ha mejorado para que sea mucho más brillante.

CalTrans ha sido un socio muy activo en Harbor Gateway durante el año pasado. Trabajar junto con nuestras diferentes organizaciones gubernamentales es muy importante para nosotros, por eso reconocimos al Distrito 7 de CalTrans por todo su esfuerzo y compromiso con la comunidad.

REAPERTURA DE DE JUEGOS DEL PARQUE ANGELS GATE

Hoy cortaremos la cinta de la gran reapertura del Angels Gate Park. Hemos trabajado con el Departamento de Recreación y Parques para actualizar el parque con equipos nuevos que incluyen toboganes, un puente para cruzar e incluso algunos instrumentos musicales.

PIAZZA MIRAMARE

¡Hemos hecho la cuenta regresiva para la construcción en Piazza Miramare el jueves! Lo que será una hermosa plaza de estilo europeo junto al paseo marítimo de San Pedro, será un lugar increíble para que residentes y visitantes tomen un café, se reúnan y pasen tiempo al aire libre. ¡Gracias a la Asociación Little Italy de Los Ángeles por ser tan grandes socios en el puerto y a mi predecesor, el concejal Busciano, por todo lo que ha hecho para llegar a este momento!

ASOCIACIÓN DE ELECTRIFICACIÓN

Esta semana asistí a la reunión trimestral de la Asociación Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) Quarterly Transportation Electrification Partnership (LACI), donde visitamos el programa de vehículos eléctricos compartidos y el piloto complementario de bicicletas eléctricas compartidas en Rancho San Pedro. Es fantástico tener un socio como LACI que considera el transporte como una cuestión de equidad y una oportunidad para promover la justicia ambiental en nuestra comunidad a través de bicicletas y automóviles eléctricos para los residentes de Rancho San Pedro.

FÚTBOL AYSO REGIÓN 6

El sábado estuvimos en el Field of Dreams para cortar el listón del regreso de AYSO a las instalaciones, donde 600 jóvenes jugadores de fútbol competirán este otoño, creando recuerdos y divirtiéndose sanamente. Tengo recuerdos increíbles animando a nuestros 5 hijos en este campo y es fantástico que nuestras familias del área del puerto puedan tener la misma experiencia que disfrutamos Connie y yo.

APERTURA DE LA ALIANZA DE RECUPERACIÓN DE SAN PEDRO

Estamos en nuestro mejor momento cuando nos conectamos y nos apoyamos unos a otros. Este fin de semana fue la gran inauguración de la oficina de San Pedro Recovery Alliance (SPRA) en S. Pacific Avenue. Catalina Hinojosa y su organización sin fines de lucro están comprometidas a brindar asistencia a quienes no tienen vivienda y a aquellos afectados por la adicción para obtener estabilidad a largo plazo brindándoles conexiones con vivienda, servicios de tratamiento, habilidades y posible colocación laboral.

MARCHA DE MADRES EN LUTO

Gracias al Asambleísta Mike Gipson por ser anfitrión de la Marcha de Madres de Luto el sábado pasado. Nos reunimos como comunidad para apoyar a quienes han experimentado pérdidas y manifestarnos contra la violencia armas de fuego.

100 AÑOS DE JORDAN HIGH

Como muchos de ustedes saben, Jordan High School cumplirá 100 años el 30 de septiembre y, con justa razón, tendremos una celebración para honrar a todos aquellos que han pasado por la escuela. Habrá comida, refrigerios y muchos socios comunitarios con información sobre sus organizaciones.

FESTIVAL DEL DÍA DEL TAMBOR DE WATTS TOWERS

¡Reserve el dia! El sábado 30 de septiembre será el aniversario número 41, del festival del Tambor en Watts Towers, y al día siguiente será el Aniversario número 46 de Simon Rodia Watts Towers Festival de Jazz. CAMINATA DE ORACIÓN

Después de la trágica muerte de José “Coach” Quezada, nuestra comunidad de Wilmington prometió que no permitiremos que actos horribles como ese destrozaran nuestra comunidad y seguridad. El sábado por la mañana continuamos esa promesa y el Harbor Christian Center organizó una caminata de oración desde la iglesia hasta el Waterfront Park para traer paz y sanación a la comunidad. Al estar allí juntos, sentimos la fuerza y ​​el amor de nuestros residentes de Wilmington y fue un honor para mí ser parte de ello.

AGRADESIENDO AL PERSONAL

Este fin de semana estuve por East Greenbelt Park para agradecer al personal de la ciudad de Los Angeles que ayudó a limpiar el graffiti y el parque para que el evento del departamento de Civil Rights Repair y que fuera un éxito total.

CAMINATA DEL DÍA INTERNACIONAL DE LA PAZ
