While last Monday was the Labor Day holiday, it was also a very special day in our city’s history - the 242nd birthday of the City of Los Angeles!

Historically, the areas of present day Los Angeles were home to the Chumash and Tongva Indigenous tribes. On September 4, 1781 a group of 14 families of settlers of Indigenous, African and European heritage traveled more than one thousand miles and established a farming community naming it El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles, "The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels."

However, in my opinion, the city truly became greater when they incorporated the communities of the One-Five! Thanks to the hard work of Wilmington founder Phineas Banning, who dredged the Harbor channel to Wilmington in 1871, the Port became an economic engine of the Harbor region. Los Angeles, recognizing the economic importance of the Port, wanted to consolidate with the cities of Wilmington and San Pedro, with the offer of benefits of being incorporated into the municipality. In August 1909, Wilmington voted 107-61 to consolidate with Los Angeles with San Pedro voting 726 in favor to 227 against.

In order to connect the city to the harbor, a connection was required between them. Anticipating this, in 1906, the city annexed the 16-mile corridor, now known as Harbor Gateway and Harbor City. Interestingly enough, if the Harbor cities hadn’t been incorporated into the city, Los Angeles threatened to build its own port in Harbor City.

And last but certainly not least of the five communities that make the One-Five so special, in 1926, Watts was incorporated into the city of Los Angeles. Founded as a ranching community, the construction of Watts Station saw rapid development and Watts achieved cityhood in 1909. Between 1920-1926, Watts’ population more than tripled in size and needed extra help to pave and maintain streets, and improve their water and sewer systems. In April 1926, Watts residents voted to join the city of Los Angeles 1,338 to 535.

Los Angeles, wouldn’t be the city it is today without the One-Five. Our 5 communities add so much to the culture, economy, and spirit of this city. While we work to uplift each of our communities, make no mistake that when we do that, we lift up the entire city of Los Angeles.

Over the past few years the City has been on the forefront in leading impactful climate change policy. It is incredibly important that we continue to set an example in implementing the Zero Waste Plans (ZWP) and Zero Waste Events (ZWE) at all of our departments and City-sponsored events. It’s important we continue to demonstrate how to eliminate single-use plastic bags, and single-use containers, and recommit to recyclable containers or compostable food ware products. I’m excited to announce that yesterday, the Energy and Environment Committee passed my motion to work towards implementing Zero Waste Events and Zero Waste Plans. This would include all City facilities, with an emphasis on expanding composting access in City Hall. We need to ask ourselves what we ask of our residents if we are to achieve our climate change goals.

LABOR DAY

On Monday, we were in the Harbor community to celebrate the strength and leadership of our Los Angeles workers and the labor movement on Labor Day. Our unions built this city and I stand with workers in their demands for good jobs, better conditions, and fair contracts. Our workers’ skill, hard-work and solidarity are unparalleled and I’m honored to be in the fight with you. Check out more from our Labor Day celebration here.

CONQUER THE BRIDGE

Congratulations to everyone who Conquered the Bridge Monday morning. It was a beautiful morning, not too hot and not too cold - a perfect morning for a run/walk to start off Labor Day!

COMMUNITY PLAN

The proposed Harbor LA Community Plan has been released with a new video series that discusses the new zoning in the Harbor Gateway, Wilmington, and Harbor City communities. The new zoning is a tailored approach to meet the needs and vision for each neighborhood. You can watch the zoning tutorials, check out the interactive Harbor LA StoryMap and review the draft code pages. The Planning Department will also be hosting Virtual and In-Person Office Hours this September. Sign up to learn more or share your thoughts and questions about the new proposed zoning.

50 YEARS OF RANCHO PALOS VERDES

On Tuesday I had the honor of representing the city of Los Angeles to congratulate the 50th Anniversary of the incorporation of our neighboring city, Rancho Palos Verdes. Here’s to 50+ more beautiful years to come!

L.A. REPAIR

Calling all Harbor Gateway, Harbor City, and Wilmington residents! L.A. REPAIR is inviting you to participate in the idea collection stage of their participatory budgeting program. We want to hear directly from YOU about the changes and improvements you want to see in your communities!

END OF SUMMER POOL PARTY

The clouds made way for a sunny day and a great End of Summer Pool Party at the Harbor Pool on Saturday! From music to swim races, BBQ and games, One-Five kids (and adults) had fun and made use of our local pool before the summer ends!

NEW SIDEWALK

This week we’re completing a new sidewalk on Normandie Ave. This will safely connect the residents at Coast Mobile Home Park to the businesses on Lomita Blvd. Thank you to the LA County Street Services for your partnership with us in Harbor City!

CELEBRATING OUR TEACHERS

As we welcome our students and teachers back to school this fall, our office along with Harbor City Harley Davidson and El Pollo Loco sponsored a dinner for the teachers at Narbonne High School. It was our way to thank them for all the work they will do in the year ahead!

NEW MATTRESSES FOR OUR FIREFIGHTERS

On Wednesday, I was at Fire Station 79 in the Harbor Gateway with Sit ‘n Sleep and the Harbor Gateway Chamber to deliver comfortable new mattresses for the Fire House. Our firefighters work long, hard hours, and for those few moments of rest, it’s important they can do so comfortably. Thank you Larry, Drew, and Sit ‘n Sleep for these generous donations to our first responders and to Dave Matthews and the Harbor Gateway Chamber for your partnership. USING MYLA311

Please continue to call 311 or report bulky items to the MYLA311 application. This week, plenty of bulky items were picked up in the Gateway, including this dresser on Western Avenue!

STREET COVER REPLACEMENT

In addition to bulky item pickup, MYLA311 can help us solve other problems such as getting street covers fixed and replaced. This street cover was missing, posing a potential injury risk to pedestrians and a vehicle risk for cars driving by. However, after being reported to 311, the Bureau of Street Services was able to come out and replace the cover!

PARKING LOT AT TOPAZ

Making parking easily accessible creates a livable, vibrant community. This Thursday we launched the Text to Park app at the Topaz Building parking lot. No longer will you need to circle around the block hoping to find a space or search for spare change with this convenient alternative. This app will be great for our downtown San Pedro businesses, Harbor residents, and visitors.

SAN PEDRO MUSIC FESTIVAL

This Sunday is the 3rd annual Music Festival at the Warner Grand Theatre. This year’s theme “Music, the universal language that soothes the soul” will bring some of the finest international and local artists from various music genres. BUILDING THE PIAZZA

Join us on Thursday, September 14th at 1 PM as we count down to the beginning of the long awaited construction of the Piazza Miramare! Light snacks and refreshments will be provided, see you there!

ANGELS GATE PARK PLAYGROUND RE-OPENING

Next Saturday we’ll be cutting the ribbon on the grand re-opening of Angels Gate Park. We’ve worked with the Department of Recreation and Parks to update the park with brand new equipment including slides, a crossing bridge and even some musical instruments!

BANK & FINANCIAL LITERACY

The Pop Up Bank & Financial Literacy Class with THINKWATTS is today from 11 AM - 2 PM and October 14th. Come out and learn about credit, sign up to get a bank account, get $100 loaded onto your card, and join in on the giveaway of $1000 to go towards your rent payment.

MOTHERS IN MOURNING MARCH

Today is the Mothers in Mourning March hosted by Assemblymember Mike Gipson. Mothers who have experienced loss are welcome to join the march/rally against gun violence. The march started at Jordan High School but the rally will be there until 3 PM. The march will go through Watts and finish back at Jordan High School with refreshments for those who participated.

100 YEARS OF JORDAN HIGH

As many of you know Jordan High School will be turning 100 years old on September 30th and rightfully so we’ll be having a celebration to honor all of those who have come through the school. There will be food, refreshments as well as many community partners with information regarding their organizations. Time for the event soon to be announced but we wanted to give the whole community a heads up so you can plan to attend and celebrate with us.

TRAFFIC CIRCLE INSTALLATION

The LA Department of Transportation were out on Thursday morning in Northeast Wilmington installing roundabouts on Colon St. at Blinn, Watson and Sanford Aves. These improvements are a result of our CD15 Truck Task Force where we are working to eliminate commercial traffic into the neighborhood.

COMMUNITY POLICE ADVISORY BOARD

The Harbor Division will be holding their Community Police Advisory Board Meeting on Thursday, September 21 at 6 PM at LA Care this month. Our office will be there and we will be providing Spanish translation. Residents are encouraged to attend!

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE WALK

Throughout the world, September 21st is known as the Day of Peace, a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence. Join us as we march from the Wilmington Municipal Building to the Heart of the Harbor SBCC Farm and advocate for peace in our community.

PLAN COMUNITARIO

FIESTA DE FIN DE VERANO EN LA PISCINA

REEMPLAZO DE CUBIERTA DE CALLE

Este domingo es el tercer festival anual de música en el Warner Grand Theatre. CONSTRUYENDO LA PLAZA

MARCHA DE MADRES EN LUTO

100 AÑOS DE JORDAN HIGH

INSTALACIÓN DE LA GIRONA DE TRÁFICO

El Departamento de Transporte de Los Ángeles salió el jueves por la mañana en el noreste de Wilmington instalando rotondas en Colon St. en Blinn, Watson y Sanford Aves. Estas mejoras son el resultado de nuestro Grupo de Trabajo de Camiones CD15, donde estamos trabajando para eliminar el tráfico comercial en el vecindario.

JUNTA ASESORA COMUNITARIA DE LA POLICÍA

CAMINATA DEL DÍA INTERNACIONAL DE LA PAZ

En todo el mundo, el 21 de septiembre se conoce como el Día de la Paz, un día dedicado a fortalecer los ideales de paz, mediante la observancia de 24 horas de no violencia. Acompáñenos mientras marchamos desde el edificio municipal de Wilmington hasta la granja SBCC Heart of the Harbor y abogamos por la paz en nuestra comunidad.
