It’s almost St. Patrick’s Day, and as a proud Irishman, it’s one of my favorite holidays (but not more than One-Five Day, of course!).
You may know this day as a time when we wear green, threaten to pinch those who don’t (not recommended), and suspend our disbelief in leprechauns. But this holiday is much more—it holds deep significance for people of Irish descent around the world. St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is credited with bringing Christianity to the Irish people. Though closely tied to Irish heritage, he was actually born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century. At the age of 16, he was kidnapped and taken to Ireland, where he was enslaved for several years before escaping. He later returned to Ireland and dedicated his life to spreading Christianity to the Irish people, opening churches and schools.
This is also a day of celebration of the resiliency and contributions of the Irish people. Irish immigrants who arrived in the United States from the 16th to 20th centuries were both shaped by America and, in turn, helped shape this country. Their descendants have played vital roles in American politics, organized labor, literature, music, film, and art. |

On Friday, the Council approved a motion I introduced in collaboration with the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce and various local stakeholders. The approval of this motion secures $130K in funding for a consultant to explore the creation of a Property-Based Business Improvement District (PBID) on Avalon Blvd. in Wilmington. This project would enable local property owners, the City, and the Port of Los Angeles to assemble a stream of funds toward improvements and business development programs on Avalon Blvd., including for supplemental public safety, business attraction, and infrastructure. Avalon Blvd. was once the center of a thriving commercial district in the Harbor, and these additional PBID amenities would be critical to promote new economic activity. Given the recent investments along the Wilmington Waterfront through the Public Access Infrastructure Plan (PAIP), it would be ideal to connect Avalon Blvd. to this growth, ensure the success of the waterfront redevelopment, and promote jobs and local business in the “Heart of the Harbor.” |

WEEKEND CLOSURE OF WESTBOUND SR 47 AT VINCENT THOMAS |

Caltrans will fully close westbound State Route 47 (SR 47) at the Vincent Thomas Bridge from 7 PM on Friday, March 28th, to 7 PM Sunday, March 30th, for a structural inspection. The closure is necessary for engineers to inspect the bridge’s main cable bands, with a possible additional closure the weekend of April 4th. Traffic will be diverted at the Ferry Street off-ramp to State Route 1/Pacific Coast Highway (SR 1) via Interstate 710, Henry Ford Ave., and northbound Alameda St. Detoured traffic will also have access to Interstate 110 from SR 1. |

A toxic algae bloom is affecting LA County beaches, causing sea lions to become sick with domoic acid toxicosis. For your safety and your pets’ safety on the beach, stay away from stranded marine mammals and call 1-800-39-WHALE if you see a sea lion showing symptoms or need assistance (see more info on the flyer above). The Marine Mammal Care Center is working to rescue and treat affected animals, but with cases tripling in a week and more expected, their hospital is nearing capacity. We’re pleased to share that a guardrail has been removed at PCH and 257th St., and a new sidewalk is being installed. This improvement means pedestrians no longer have to walk in the street and can now safely cross from one side to the other. |

Exciting progress is being made on the new Starbucks at the corner of PCH and Frampton Ave.! The framework is going up quickly for this drive-through location. We quickly removed graffiti on a street sign along Lomita Blvd. by using the Works App, the county’s version of the MyLA311 app. Since Lomita Blvd. runs through both LA City and the county, we reported the issue through the county app, and they responded swiftly, removing the graffiti on their side of the jurisdictional line right away. On Saturday, we attended the March Delegate Meeting, presented by Rising Communities and Best Start Region 2. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church hosted the meeting, where the Department of Mental Health gave a presentation of Immigration Adaptation and Resilience. The discussion focused on immigrant trauma and highlighted best practice for resilience which included some scenarios based examples. The next meeting will be on April 26th. |

This Wednesday, we joined the first workshop on a potential mobility hub at the corner of Figueroa Blvd. and PCH. This project aims to transform the existing PCH/Figueroa Park and Ride into a vibrant mobility hub that enhances the area's visual appeal while integrating various transportation options. The hub will offer safe, community-oriented spaces for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users, making transitions between different modes of transportation smoother. |

CIERRE DE FIN DE SEMANA EN SR 47 SENTIDO OESTE EN VINCENT THOMAS |
