Basic Training Online Course

We did some filming recently and have changed out a number of the videos for the online course. These videos were more than a few years old and we wanted to update them to reflect improvements we've made in how we teach our classes.  IF YOU ARE A PREVIOUS SUBSCRIBER TO THIS COURSE, WE WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH ANOTHER 30 DAYS ACCESS. We want everyone to take full advantage of what we offer and that includes improvements we make to our products.  Please contact us if you wish to take advantage of this.

Backyard hazards for your pets

Prevention magazine’s April issue has an article entitled How Safe is Your Backyard? by Molly Raisch. She mentions possible problems with pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer and plants.

Does stress affect the performance of your dog?

We know that our own stress can greatly affect our performance and ability to function, but do you ever consider how your dog’s stress level might affect his/her performance? Not only your dog’s stress level, but your own stress level can affect his performance as well.

What are the consequences for a dog who misbehaves?

One question I am often asked is this: “How do I correct my dog when he doesn’t do what he’s told?” In our society, we tend to be quick to want to dole out punishment for “misbehavior” or doing something “he knows was wrong.” Dogs are often labeled stubborn, defiant, dominant or other terms that imply willful disobedience. We expect our dogs to do what is “right” immediately and without question.

What are the consequences for a dog who misbehaves? Part 2

In my earlier post on this topic, I started the discussion of what to do when a dog misbehaves. First, we need to ensure the dog understands what is expected. Then we need to make sure we have provided appropriate incentives for doing what is expected. Let’s say you’ve done all that, and now he misbehaves.

How good is your dog’s memory?

If you think your dog doesn’t have a very good memory, just try walking past the spot where he found a dead animal or other equally smelly and enticing (to our dogs) object the other day. If your dog is anything like mine, he will make a beeline for that spot.

While I love living in a rural area, there are some downsides. I enjoy seeing all of the wildlife, but finding remains of the poor bunnies who have met an unpleasant end to life is not so pleasant. At least, for me it’s not. For my dogs, it is a very exciting event. The next day, they make a beeline for that same spot. And the next day. And the next day. In fact, it’s been about three weeks since a poor bunny met his demise in our meadow, and the dogs still make a beeline to check that spot every day even though I can no longer see any signs of what happened there.
