Ask The Trainer Book

Our book, Ask The Trainer: Answers to common questions about dog training and behavior issues, including jumping, leash manners, aggression, fearfulness, and more, is being updated with additional articles and a full keyword index.  We plan to publish this work as an e-book on Amazon and other e-book distributors. It will be available with our next newsletter.

Online Training Jumping Module

We are working on video and handouts for our online training module for jumping, which will include in-depth tools and techniques to help people with dogs that have a tendency to jump a lot .  Our own Vizsla, Romeo, fits into this camp, although he is much better now than he was when he was a puppy.  This module will be available late May.

Preventing possessiveness or resource guarding with puppies

“I can take anything away from my dog.” I’ve heard it many times. While I’m glad that these people are able to take things away from their dogs, they are often missing one important piece of the process to ensure their dogs are not possessive of or guarding resources.

Practice with your dog makes perfect – or at least more pleasant!

One of the things I miss about being in the suburbs (perhaps the only thing!) is the variety of dog-walking routes we had available. Although we had some favorite routes, I tried to make sure I included plenty of variety, even if it was walking the opposite way or on the other side of the street. Living in a rural area on a busy road does not give us opportunities to walk off our own property unless we drive somewhere. That being the case, most walks are pretty similar, so we don’t get as much practice with new and different things, especially when it comes to encountering other dogs and people.

When a dog’s arousal is high, it’s hard to make good choices!

I have several clients whose dogs have trouble with other dogs out on walks. Some of these dogs do fine off leash with other dogs. Some do not. But for each of these dogs, when they spot another dog, they are difficult to control. For a ten pound dog, this might just be annoying. For a hundred and ten pound dog, this is putting your safety at risk. Either way, it’s something my clients want to resolve so they can enjoy walks with their dogs.
