Although recent events on both local and global scales are neither unique or new—and in fact are all too real parts of the daily experience of people of color, poor people, disenfranchised communities, and marginalized peoples —the heightened frustration, anger, and sadness they bring remind us of the importance of returning to those tools and structures we have created for ourselves to thrive. In the MCC often times it means returning to those questions our community mural “Rootedness, Survival, Resiliency, Creativity†presents us every day (mural by brilliant artist Cece Carpio).
In moments such as these, we ask—
“What does it mean to survive? What is survival?â€
“What does it mean to be rooted? To be Resilient? To build resiliency?â€
“What are all the ways to be creative?"
"What are ways that our families, communities, we as individual have always had to be creative in order to be safe, to grow, to thrive and what happens when many of us do not make it?â€
It is vital for us to continue dialoguing about the tools that will help us to continue to move, breathe, vision, create while in a state of deep sadness, pain, anger and confusion. We invite folks to engage in this dialogue with us at whatever capacity, as a means to acknowledge ways of supporting our movements and truths.
We are sending love and light to each of you in these last weeks of the Fall Semester.

As always, we invite you to stop by and visit us at our temporary space in Hearst Field Annex D-37.

a litany for survival:: audre lorde
For those of us who live at the shoreline
standing upon the constant edges of decision
crucial and alone
for those of us who cannot indulge
the passing dreams of choice
who love in doorways coming and going
in the hours between dawns
looking inward and outward
at once before and after
seeking a now that can breed
futures
like bread in our children's mouths
so their dreams will not reflect
the death of ours:
For those of us
who were imprinted with fear
like a faint line in the center of our foreheads
learning to be afraid with our mother's milk
for by this weapon
this illusion of some safety to be found
the heavy-footed hoped to silence us
For all of us
this instant and this triumph
We were never meant to survive.
And when the sun rises we are afraid
it might not remain
when the sun sets we are afraid
it might not rise in the morning
when our stomachs are full we are afraid
of indigestion
when our stomachs are empty we are afraid
we may never eat again
when we are loved we are afraid
love will vanish
when we are alone we are afraid
love will never return
and when we speak we are afraid
our words will not be heard
nor welcomed
but when we are silent
we are still afraid
So it is better to speak
remembering
we were never meant to survive

The committee will begin meeting regularly the second week of Spring 2015 but we will try to meet at least once before the end of the Fall semester (separate doodle for fall meeting time will follow). All dates and time depends on people's availability. Working on the committee will be a 5-10 hour commitment but that we will work to ensure that anyone who is interested is supported and sustained throughout the planning process, this includes offering units to UCB students.

API Connect: Caring for Ourselves and our Communities was created as part of a grant received by the Tang Center’s Counseling and Psychological Services and Health Promotion that focuses on the promotion of API mental health and prevention. A website was created with the goals of providing info on stress, depression, anxiety, API student stressors, coping, student videos, and parent videos.
Through our partnerships, students are able to drop in APASD (Chavez 249) to seek counseling and speak to our resident psychologist, Lilian Chang.
Lilian is available on Mondays and Tuesdays 10am - 12pm or by appointment.
