Dear Slipstreamers Riders and Parents,

This week's newsletter roundup is packed to the brim with last week's assessment results, a fresh development programme timetable, and full details about our annual Club Championships. We reach out to members for feedback via a new survey; you are introduced to Silver development coach, Phil Coleman, in the Who's Who Corner; and further details are provided for those of you keen to be part of the Tour of Britain squad. There is some fantastic race news and amazing photos in the Chatter Box Corner;  the Reminders section is packed with information and dates too important to miss; and as usual, we round up the week with the all important race results in the Winners Corner...!

Parents, please ensure your children read this too and are aware of what's going on in their club - it is, after all, their newsletter! Feel free to email us their email address/es, and we'll send the weekly issue directly to their inbox. We hope you enjoy this week's issue!

Club Championship Dates

Yes members, it's almost time for our annual Club Championships, in which you get to test your cycling prowess in 5 categories [Skills, Time Trials, Road, MTB, Track], and compete for some fantastic prizes, including the much coveted Club Champs jerseys for your respective age group! For those of you who are new to the club, this is open to ALL members, who are encouraged to take part; but it is not compulsory if you don't want to compete, and not all categories have to be entered if you do wish to join in. However, it is worth mentioning that all the results are collated and added up, and those with most points at the end of the five events are deemed to be Club Champions - i.e. 6 boys and 6 girls. Thus, if you do want to aim for this, the more events entered the better your chances of becoming Club Champion!

2014 Club Championships Categories and Dates:
  •     Skills, Time Trials (Part I): 27th September [see notes]
  •     Time Trials (Part II): 11th October [see notes]
  •     Road Races: 18th October
  •     Mountain Biking: 8th November
  •     Track: 22nd November [see notes]

A Few Important Notes - Please Read Carefully:
  • Our annual Family Fun Day is scheduled for the 27th September, where we will have the full day at our disposal. Please keep this day free as we will be holding both the Skills AND Time Trials categories of the Club Champs on this day. If you cannot attend on the 27th, you will not get another opportunity to do the Skills category, BUT, you will be able to do the Time Trial category on the 11th October. However, read on...
  • If you wish to take part in the Club Champs Time Trial category, and have missed the 27th September date, you may take part on the 11th October. The following rules/ caveats apply:
    • The Club Champs TT will be done during the early session so you will have to be signed on and ready to ride by 8.25am sharp!
    • If you did the Club Champs TT on the 27th September, you may not re-do this on the 11th October - you only get one go.
  • The Track category scheduled for the 22nd November is to be held in Calshot. The following rules/ caveats apply:
    •  For safety and track bike size reasons, U6’s are not permitted to take part in this category. Only age categories U8 upwards may take part.
    •  You may only ride the session on the 22nd if you have attended a Calshot session run by Steve May prior to this date, AND have been told you have met the required standard to ride Calshot by Steve May. If in doubt, just ask.
    • As per any attendance at Calshot, you MUST register in advance by emailing Steve May <stevemay@dircon.co.uk>. No exceptions.
And finally, if you are unable to attend any of the Club Champs on the dates listed above, aside from the TT, this cannot be made up on another date. However, please don't let this deter you from taking part in what you can, as Club Championships are great fun and well worth it; and we hope to see as many of you as possible competing! After the final Club Champs event, your volunteers will be crunching the numbers and sorting out medals and trophies, and our 12 Club Champions will be announced during our Christmas Party as part of the annual prize presentations for the year.

Reminders will follow prior to each event, but do note these dates on your wall calendars/ electronic diaries/ memory banks! If you have any questions, feel free to email us or come and talk to your coaches or any of the club volunteers. Good luck everyone!

Rider Development Programme

August Assessment Results - A Note from Your Coaches...

Well done to all of you who took part last weekend on assessment day.  All the passes are listed in the table below, along with riders who recently passed their BCE training and are now able to move to the Gold squad. If you don't see your name on the list below, don't be disheartened and don't give up!

Silvers: The general standard this month was excellent - again. For those that didn't quite pass you were all very close. In two cases it was just a little bit more concentration and keeping your hands wide on the handlebars (a good habit everyone must have). In the last case it was a lack of endurance after a few weeks off made it hard to keep up all of the time. We'll be looking out for you during the next training cycle and at the next assessment in October - refer to the upated programme timetable below for when this will be.
Bronzes: You all did great, but keep at it a few more weeks and you'll soon be moving up - come and see us for feedback!

And finally, certificates will be given out at the end of the session on the 30th of August - these will not be ready until then so please be patient on this front! If you are owed a certificate from the previous round of assessments, come and see us on Saturday as we have a pile of uncollected ones!
The following riders from Bronze may move to Silver I – report to Andy B or Phil S for squadding: The following riders from Silver I may move to Silver II – report to Paul S or Steve C for squadding: The following riders may (if they wish) move up a squad in Silver II – talk or Steve C or Paul M: The following riders may (if they wish) move to the Gold Squad – please report to Dave G or Sam for squadding: The following riders will be able to move to the Gold Squad – once they have completed their BCE training. Please talk to Steve or Paul M for dates to complete this:

2014 Membership Survey - We Need Your Feedback!

An email was sent out earlier this week asking you to participate in a short survey that we are running - if you have not yet seen this email, please click here.

We would be very grateful if all U16 Members would please take a few minutes to click the survey link , and let us know about your Slipstreamers experience to date, and how YOU want the club to improve. We would also appreciate the input of Parents, Coaches, Young Officials and Volunteers, so please do also fill in a fresh survey, making sure you select the correct option in Question 1, and skip questions not relevant to you. All feedback is anonymous so feel free to be honest!

The survey will run for a few weeks, so if you are on holiday and cannot access the link, don't panic - we will remind you weekly while it's running, and will let you know in advance when we will be closing the survey. Please don't hesitate to contact membership@slipstreamers.co.uk if you have any questions.

Parents, Do You Want to Learn Cycling Skills Like Your Children?

Prime Coaching are holding a skills session morning for grown-ups on Sunday September 7th. This is great for parents of Slipstreamers who would like to learn similar bike handling skills to those which their children have. Road bikes are not required, and any bike style can be used as long as it has 2 brakes and is safe and road worthy. Helmets must be worn. If we get enough takers, we might lay on the Bronze assessment course!! For more details if you are interested, please click here.

Who's Who Corner - Meet Your Volunteers & Coaches

Each week we will be introducing you to one of the very many coaches and volunteers who help out at Slipstreamers (check out the archive for previous Who's Who Bio's), without whom the club would not function! You'll get to put a face to a name (if you don't know them already), plus you'll get to find out a little bit more about each one.

This week, we introduce you to a coach who simply lives and breathes cycling, and who you will find at the club on most Saturdays with the coaching team diligently training the Silver 1 squad.  Please meet none other than...

Philip Coleman: Level 2 Coach - Silver 1 Squad

We asked Phil a few questions we thought you'd be interested to know the answers to:
{How long have you been volunteering at HSS?}
Ella and Millie started coming to Hillingdon Slipstreamers after Easter 2012 and just before the Olympic spirit captured the imagination of so many more young cyclists.  I started volunteering as a rider helper later that year.   After that I was sucked in!   A moment of madness in 2013 saw me sign up for a Level 2 coaching course.  This was promptly completed after randomly meeting the person who marks the course exams in Lanzarote over the Christmas vacation!  The rest, as they say is history.
{What is the best/ worst part of your role at HSS?}
The best part is seeing the riders come up from the Apron into the Silver 1 group, riding a session on the circuit for the first time and then rapidly gaining strength, confidence and technique. Seeing the same riders a few months on, riding confidently in a group, working together, communicating and applying what they’ve learnt is enormously satisfying. Passing riders up to the Silver 2 group who’ve been with you since arrival from the Apron is a source of huge pride and joy. The worst part is when accidents happen and you hold your breath hoping everything is okay. We’ve recently seen a number of destroyed helmets; thankfully underneath which were protected heads.The importance of a proper fitted helmet, a roadworthy bike and safe riding cannot be understated.
{What do you do in your spare time, away from HSS?}
Spare time, what’s that?   Cycling is my sport also.   I ride regularly in a chain gang around Regent’s Park (wishing that the adults I ride with were even half as skillful as most Hillingdon Slipstreamers). The competitive spirit of the club has also pushed me into riding a few TT’s and circuit races. In quieter moments, I like to read, play cards and chillax with my family.
{What is your “real” job?}
I work as a management consultant.  That means I advise businesses on how to improve and then help them change how they operate.  My work involves helping businesses (mostly banks) keep pace with new technology, stay compliant with new regulations and assisting when two businesses ‘get married’ (one buys the other) to form one larger business.
{What is your most interesting cycling/ sporting experience?}
I have had the privilege of cycling the end to end (Lands-End <-> John O’Groats) in both directions.   Seeing the full length of the country on a bike gives you a whole new appreciation for the scale and beauty of this island.  Going over Glencoe & Rannoch Moor in Scotland was the highlight – a place of staggering beauty.   Somewhat more surreally, I periodically do overnight rides, the biggest of which is the Dunwich Dynamo – 108 miles from Hackney to Suffolk.   The most recent Dynamo saw me riding through a night of thunderstorms and lightening – a beautiful display of the power of nature, if somewhat wet!
{What is your favorite band/ artist/ musician of all time?}
I don’t have one overriding favorite. I am a child of the 1970s and 80s so my life soundtrack would include Mike Oldfield, Queen, Dire Straits, Cindy Lauper, Pink Floyd, Oasis, New Order, Paul Simon, Sting, Genesis, David Bowie, Abba and Beautiful South. That said, I’ll listen to lots of music and can happily switch between Meat-Loaf and Mahler without too much trouble.
{If you could meet any historical figure, past or present, who would it be and why?}
Albert Einstein would be my choice.   I am a scientist by training and Einstein stands tall amongst the giants who have helped us understand the universe around us.   Closely followed by Charles Darwin, Marie Curie and Ernst Schrödinger.  Perhaps also Heisenberg although I am a bit uncertain about him!
{If you could time travel to any era, historical or future, where would you go?}
From a British Cycling perspective, we are living in a golden age.  Savour it.  In decades to come, people will talk about the last 10 years as the golden age in British Cycling and the heroes we see today will be amongst the answers future generations will give to the question above!
{If you could be any fictional character from a book, comic, movie etc., whom would you choose?}
Harry Potter – I think zooming around on a broomstick might just eclipse tearing around on a bicycle for fun. I have it all worked out. Hi-mod carbon-fibre handle plus Campag ‘Super-Wizard’ throughout.
{If you could be any animal, bird or insect for a day, what would you choose?}
I’d be an Owl - a majestic and mysterious beast that sees and hears everything there is to see.

Thank you for taking the time to give us a bit of insight into who you are outside of Slipstreamers, Phil!

Chatter Box Corner - Reports, Updates and General Chit Chat

Calling Youth Riders in Categories C, D and E for this Saturday

The BC West Thames race programme for this weekend is extended to include youth racers in categories C (U12), D (U10) and E (U8). If you are interested in racing, and you have a British Cycling race licence, please email Clive on cdawkins.312@lgflmail.org or Mark on MarkDoel@britishcycling.org.uk  directly, or just turn up on Saturday and be ready to race by 1pm.  If you are new to racing, or are regular racers in these age categories, do take part - these are 20 minutes and well worth the experience.

Finally, we also need some parent volunteers to help with the judging - if you are able to help, please do get in touch with Clive or Mark directly.

Winchester Criterium - Slipstreamers Paint the Town Yellow & Orange!

On Sunday 17th August, the Slipstreamers were out in force at the Winchester town race. This was a very technical course that makes the Guilford race look like a walk in the park! The rain beforehand did nothing to steady the parents' nerves of the cornering to come, but the sunshine eventually decided to make an appearance and the children, as usual, threw themselves into the event.

As you can see from the results below in the Winners Corner, this was another successful day for the riders.

Those that didn't make the podium still equipped themselves very well, and is defintely one for the calendar for next year!

Photos from the Criterium can be viewed in the storyboard by clicking here. Well done Slipstreamers!

Parents and Volunteers with Shovels!

A big THANK YOU to those parents who helped out on Saturday by brandishing shovels and spending the session digging, sweeping and generally tidying up the edges of the circuit. There have been a few accidents lately with riders not sure where the road and grass meet, so this has been a big help.

There is still more grass to be removed, so if you have a shovel at home and fancy helping us out on Saturday, please bring this along and we will put you to good use! Aside from the reward of a job well done, there will be medals for the adults with the best cleared edges! :-)

Do You Have Anything to Share...?

Riders, please keep sending us any race notes of your experiences - even if it's a line or two, updates you want to share, race musings and general comments - this is your newsletter, and this is your section to share your thoughts with your fellow Slipstreamers. Parents, please take photos of your children at the various races they represent Slipstreamers at so we can showcase them in this newsletter. Do email your contributions to us at sigon@slipstreamers.co.uk

A Few Reminders - Don't Forget...

Tour of Britain Final Stage Race - Next Steps

For those of you who are interested, and have already expressed interest, in being part of the Slipstreamers team to ride at the Go-Race event in London at the final leg of the Tour of Britain on Sunday 14th September (click here for last week's newsletter for full details), please note the following:
  • If you have given us your name, we have not forgotten about you - you are on our list and you will form part of our squad! Thank you for your patience while we co-ordinate behind the scenes!
  • If you have not yet given us your name, but want to take part, let us know by emailing signon@slipstreamers.co.uk or talking to the coaches on Saturday.
  • And if you are attending practice on Saturday, and want to be part of the squad, please bring your mountain bikes along as we will be preparing you for this race! If you are unable to attend this Saturday, don't worry - we won't remove you from the list, but do let us know please, so we can add you to the list and prepare accordingly.
  • And finally, if you don't have a mountain bike for Saturday, talk to the mechanics as there are bound to be a few available.
As a reminder, entry to this event is FREE, so if you have not yet raced, and are interested, we would highly recommend this!  There are, of course, a few things to be reminded of:
  • Only riders under the age of 12 may race. The smallest riders must be able to fit onto the smallest bike (11" frame, with 24" wheels).

  • You must race in your Slipstreamers club jersey - if you don't have one, email kit@slipstreamers.co.uk and Chris will advise how you go about acquiring one.
  • All races will take place on British Cycling's fleet of Pina mountain bikes (with flat pedals), available in a range of sizes.
If you need further information, email signon@slipstreamers.co.uk and we will be happy to help.

If You'd Like To Buy Club Kit

Please email kit@slipstreamers.co.uk directly.  Chris will be able to advise you via email what is available for purchase.

Fancy a Free BC Licence?

If you are not yet a British Cycling member and wish to join, please email membership@slipstreamers.co.uk and Asti will explain how you can get your first year of BC membership free, which includes a free youth racing license.
