Fancy Designing a Sign for our Park?

Calling all creative Slipstreamers! We would like for you to put to use your imaginations and come up with a design for a sign to be used on the circuit. Unfortunately, there have been MANY instances where pedestrians are wandering onto the circuit from the footpaths just as high speed peletons come round, resulting in some really nasty accidents! Unfortunately, the adults are struggling to come up with a design that would deter pedestrians from wandering onto the circuit from the footpaths - and of course, since we all know children have the BEST imaginations, we'd ike you to have a go at creating one for the park.

So, put on your creative hat, grab some pencils and paper, and see if you can come up with a sign that all people, no matter what language they speak, would understand means do NOT walk on the circuit and to keep to the footpaths. All designs will be reviewed, and while we cannot guarantee they will be used on the circuit as official signs, we'll definitely publish a few in our Newsletter and perhaps even the Magazine to show off your hard work and creativity! Please email signon@slipstreamers.co.uk with a scan of your artwork as soon as you can!

Cycling For A Good Cause

Every now and then we receive news from Slipstreamers members who cycle to fundraise for causes dear to their hearts. As long as a Slipstreamer member is directly involved, the activity is cycling related, and there is no commercial benefit, we are very happy to share your experiences with other members.

Cycling for Cancer Research

From Kitty Vasey, Age 10:
On Sunday 22nd June, Ted and I did a 20 mile bike ride for cancer research. I cycled with a sprained wrist and Ted was the youngest cyclist. The bike ride was set up by my mum's mum but she died of cancer so it's now run by other people and we've raised over £100,000. If you would like to increase that amount and sponsor us, you can go to this link here.

From Ted Vasey, Age 5:

It was very fun but it took a lot of energy and it was such a long way for my little legs.

Race Reports, Updates and General Chatter

Westerley Time Trials - 2nd July

An evening of experimentation at the circuit this Wednesday as both Josh Copley and Sam Henning took to the circuit, racing on fully equipped Time Trial machines for the first time. Both riders made significant improvements to their previous times, both looking very proud with their results. Sam recorded a 23 minute and 4 seconds (previously at the Westerley 10 was 24:50) and Josh surprised himself by coming in just under 24 minutes with a 23:59 (previously at the Westerley was 25:48). Ben Moriarty continues to improve steadily, his relaxed facial expression and positioning on the bike gave him a superb 24:24, making a significant dent in his previous outing of 25:42.

Jamie Wimbourne has been adding some interval training into his own training programme, and recorded a 28:03 which smashes his previous outing of 29:17. Nathan, saving himself for his School Sport’s day, managed a 32:31 against his previous time of 32:06. Ella Coleman continues to ride steadily recording a 35:21 and taking off almost a minute against her previous of 36:18!

Jess Henning, who has just turned 12, made her debut in a senior time trial. She rode a little nervously at first, yet still managed to record a 34:25 and we hope that an increase in her confidence as she races more is reflected in future events.

Well done everyone. It made a terrific evening for spectating!

Results as follows:

Position No. Name Total Time Average Speed Best Time Best Speed
3 28 Sam Henning 23:04.5 26.886 02:03.6 27.375

Track Team Selection

Congratulations to Lorna Bowler, Harriet Mellor, Carl Jolly and Charles Page, who have been selected to make up half the team representing the Central Region for Track at the UK Schools Games that will be held in Manchester in September. They have been training incredibly hard outside of Slipstreamers and it is great to see them reap the benefits - well done to all of you. These riders will be competing against the other BC regions aiming to be the best in the country, and we wish them the best of luck and look forward to hearing all about it afterwards!

Racing Returns to Hillingdon for C (U8), D (U10), E (U12)

From next week, for 3 weeks only, racing returns to Hillingdon Circuit for the above age groups. Racing starts at 6:00pm so make sure you arrive in plenty of time. There is some help required with judging so if you can help in any way please get in touch and we will pass your name on.

If You're New to Racing...

For those of you new to Slipstreamers, or if you have been inspired to race by last weeks newsletter or the arrival of the Tour De France, there are MANY ways for you to get started as a racer - a particularly good place to go is the British Cycling website's event page, where races for all ages and disciplines are listed. You need to have a racing licence, which you can get quite easily from BC; and once you have that, you may enter as many races as you like, or have the time for! During the summer there are plenty of races in the evening and weekends, and if you aren't sure where to start or have any questions, just ask one of the coaches at the weekend!

And a Special Mention to one of our Volunteers...

... Karen Roake, who came 2nd for the ladies at the Windsor triathlon sprint distance a few ago. Well done Karen! Aside from helping you do so well at cycle races, the discipline of cycling carries over and also goes a long well in helping you succeed at other sport.

And a VERY special mention this week goes to:

Maya Buurman, who applied the single most important rule of cycling - OBSERVATION - when she had finished her riding. Before moving off the track after her race, Maya made sure to look around to ensure it was safe - something that one can never do enough of when you are on your bike. Not being observant can cause a serious accident, and Maya yet again has demonstrated her ability to think like a smart sensible and safe cyclist. Well done Maya - you used a skill that everyone should use at all time when on a bike - be it on track, in the woods, or on the road!

CYCLING FUN FACT (S) OF THE WEEK

Did You Know...?

... that the Tour de France was the brainchild of a struggling daily sports newspaper in France, L'Auto? Indeed, it was in fact a junior cycling journalist, Géo Lefèvre, who came up with the idea to host a six-day race of the sort popular on the track - but all around France! After a lunchoen with the editor, prominent cyclist Henri Desgrange, it was decided to push forward the idea and L'Auto announced the race on 19 January 1903!

It was to be "the greatest cycling trial in the entire world. A race more than a month long: Paris to Lyon to Marseille to Toulouse to Bordeaux to Nantes to Paris."

The first Tour de France was waved away by the starter, Georges Abran, at 3:16 p.m. on 1 July 1903. 60 riders departed from the now famous Cafe au Réveil-Matin in Montgeron on the southern outskirts of Paris at 3:16 PM, July 1.

Afterwards, the circulation of L'Auto increased significantly due to this event; a special edition of 130,000 copies was made after the race was over, and normal circulation increased from 25,000 to 65,000.The big success made sure that the Tour de France was scheduled again for 1904. The cyclists had also become national heroes!!

And finally, do remember the following important things:

1. Dress for the warm weather (but be ready for 4 seasons in a single day!), eat a healthy breakfast before you head out, and drink plenty of water!
2. Parents: park safely when you arrive please, i.e. stay off the grass verge at the gates, and park in the spaces provided!
3. Arrive on time for sign on - we start at 9am, we close at 9.30am!
4. Let us know ASAP if your phone numbers, address or emails change!

Stay safe and we'll see you on Saturday!
