Holiday Greetings!

Message from the President

As I write this, I am travelling eastbound to Toronto on a VIA train in the middle of a raging snow storm. Like many of you, I am wrapping up my final days of teaching before a much anticipated break for the Christmas Holidays (my family is headed south to the hotter and drier climate of Arizona!).

This fall was an epic journey for me on so many levels. Not the least of which was my new role as Interim President of NATS Ontario. What a pleasure to be part of the very exciting and successful fall Audition Day at Western University run by the experienced Michelyn Wright and supported by treasurer Linda Condy; network and dine with my colleagues at the fall banquet and meeting so beautifully organized by Alison Moody; meet and greet recruiters from programs across the province at our recruiting event coordinated by Mark Daboll, as well as oversee some new membership initiatives spearheaded by our InterimVP of Membership Shannon Coates. You can find all of the details in this newsletter as well as in our meeting minutes crafted by Michael Donovan posted on our website.

Looking back, I am so pleased to have been part of these annual NATS Ontario activities and look forward to the next time we meet!

With best wishes for a safe and restful holiday season!

Elizabeth McDonald
Interm President

Notes from our District Gov'nor

I have many good wishes and congratulations to distribute this year!  It felt truly bizarre to be on the other side of the planet while our Ontario Chapter NATS Audition were taking place at Western this year.  I was in Wuhan, China travelling to initiate an exchange relationship with a very large conservatory there.  They have an astonishing number of very enthusiastic singers there and they all want to sing opera (bel canto)!  I had the pleasure of working in a masterclass with some of the voice faculty there and felt very flattered by and honoured by their lavish hospitality.  BUT this was the first year since 1999 that I have not enjoyed the company of my colleagues and the singing of all our students at our Auditions and that did feel very odd indeed.

I extend my hearty thanks and congratulations to the NATS Ontario executive, under Elizabeth McDonald’s leadership, for their very productive work on our behalf this year and for their work, along with Michelyn Wright our Auditions Coordinator, for yet another successful round of Auditions.  I have heard that the evening at the Windermere was convivial and I feel as though I really missed out this year not being able to enjoy that wonderful new tradition with you.  Long may this new tradition continue; and again, my thanks and congratulations to the Executive for this innovation and success.

My dear friend and colleague, Jackie Short, cheerfully served as our venue coordinator for the NATS Auditions here at Western in my absence this year.  I am very grateful to her for her willingness to serve, her support and her exertions on behalf NATS Ontario and Western.  It was a much more complex job this year because of the construction here at Western, so, I am doubly grateful to Jackie!

The New Year brings for me another round of discussions of the NATS President’s Strategic Planning Committee – I am getting good at Skype.  If you have ideas and issues that you would like brought to the attention of a pretty august group of NATS luminaries, please send them to me and I can include these thoughts in my submissions and discussions.

I have not yet received the list of singers for the first round of NATSAA which will be held in London on February 8th.  I will communicate the full details of this competition once the numbers and therefore scheduling become clear.

I don’t think that I will be going to China in the spring (once a year is more than enough – it’s an arduous journey!), so I can look forward to greeting you all at our General Meeting in May. Until then, I wish you all warm, happy holidays and professional fulfillment and success for 2014.

Audition Stats from Michelyn

  • 229 applicants with only 12 cancelations
  • the best attended Auditions in years!
  • over $5000 in cash prizes awarded
  • successful launch of the new musical theatre classes.
  • Final Concert Adjudicators commented on the high quality performances these young musical theatre performers gave. I also was told by numerous Adjudicators that it was the best final concert in years.
  • Approximately 75% of the Adjudicators stayed to attend the Final Concert, the best turn out we've had in my time as Coordinator.

Western's host coordinator Jackie Short did a miraculous job of organizing the event under cramped construction conditions. We thank the university for hosting so graciously.

It will be fantastic to go back in a number of years to see the beautiful results of the newly built wing.

New Developments

After a difficult summer losing two long-time NATS Ontario members, the executive has agreed that the creation of a
Legacy Page on our website would be a great way to honour the work and professional lives of past members.  We are looking to you for your ideas and memories as we create this over the winter of 2014.  Our hope is to unveil the new page at the Spring Meeting in May.

We envision the page to include:
  • names of members who have passed on such as Lynn Blaser, Donna Sherman, Bernard Diamant
  • members who have retired such as Joanne Bentley and Diane Nelson
  • charter members
Please forward your memories and thoughts to Shannon Coates at membership@natsontario.org

English and German Diction for Singers

by Amanda Johnson

Often underestimated, lyric diction is a portal to powerful performance. It is through lyric diction that singers are able to communicate the wishes and desires of the poet, as well as the composer. Far beyond memorizing the rules of pronunciation, the study of diction involves learning to perceive speech patterns in different languages, practicing their precise articulation, recognizing this in one's own speech and singing, as well as in that of others, and developing an awareness of the refined, delicate movements of the articulators and their subsequent effect on singing tone.

Amanda Johnston takes a modernized approach to the study of lyric diction in English and German Diction for Singers. Utilizing the latest adaptation of the Neue Rechtschreibung (2009), Johnston makes German increasingly accessible through the recognition that English and German are related languages, and thus have many things in common with regard to lyric diction. This comprehensive resource includes a thorough analysis of the German and English languages, as well as lists, tables, charts, musical examples, and even tongue twisters. Specific topics addressed include the German schwa, the use of the curly-tail J in German, the treatment of R in both languages, and the correct formation of the elusive open U and the extended Epsilon.

Lyric diction is a mandatory subject area for all prospective opera singers and music students enrolled in an academic institution. This book is designed for both undergraduate and graduate courses in German and English lyric diction and is an invaluable resource for classical singers, vocal coaches, and voice teachers alike.
