2014 AIA San Francisco Design Awards
Submissions for the 2014 AIA San Francisco Design Awards are now being accepted through February 13 at 1:00 pm (PST). In existence for nearly half a century, AIASF's Design Awards program celebrates outstanding achievements in architecture and design. Recognizing the work of Bay Area individuals and organizations as well as architects and related professionals from afar who contribute to the framework of our local built environment, the program serves to inform the public of the breadth and value of architectural practice.

We are happy to announce that Jennifer Yoos, FAIA, will serve as 2014 Jury Chair. Yoos is a principal at Minneapolis-based firm VJAA, recipient of the 2012 AIA Firm Award.

Looking Ahead

2014 will be a landmark year for AIA San Francisco; one of transition and opportunity. In addition to an amazing array of member and community programming, several major initiatives will likely capture your attention, including the National Repositioning endeavor, enhanced opportunities for emerging professionals on the path to licensure, and the Missing 32%. Together the strong, insightful, and engaged members of AIASF will have the opportunity to boldly shape a leaner, stronger, highly responsive organization.
Many of you might know that a “repositioning” effort was launched at a national level in 2013 and the door was opened for change. AIA San Francisco did not just walk through that door; we took it off, envisioning a transparent, approachable, more affordable, and diverse organization serving members with equity regardless of geography. Our vision was founded on a “restructuring” rather than a “repositioning,” and supported by a remapped organizational framework. We shared a manifesto with other chapters and leadership at AIA National, and welcome you to join us in the effort to be thought leaders and change makers in 2014.

The Missing 32% grew out of a grass-roots effort to support our truly diverse group of professionals. While gender equity has been achieved in architectural education, it is fundamentally missing at a licensed and leadership level. Virtually 32% of the educated and potential female architects never become licensed, or leave the profession – thus the Missing 32%. In 2014, AIASF will take the simmering conversation to the next level, undertaking research to put metrics behind the mystery of why Architecture lags other professions in the number of licensed female leaders.

January 10, AIASF will launch the third year of its successful ARE Pact program, strengthening our efforts to offer resources for emerging professionals seeking a path to licensure. Our chapter will also continue to provide ways for interns to earn IDP hours toward fulfilling their education requirements, with monthly sessions that cover topics outlined in the Emerging Professional’s Companion.

We hope that you will actively join us in 2014. Trust me, participation is rewarding, especially in a time of change when your voice really makes a difference. I look forward to working with you as we help to reshape our organization together!
