Excitement Builds in April!

April's races have a nice progression to them, starting with a non-competitive run on Alii Drive and finishing with an extreme triathlon in Honaunau.

Up first on April 6 is the "Troy Barboza" Law Enforcement Run/Walk to raise money for Special Olympics.  This is a non-competitive run/walk coordinated by the Hawaii Police Department, First Hawaiian Bank and Special Olympics and is named after Troy Barboza, a fallen police officer who volunteered as a Special Olympics coach and participated in the first Torch Run in 1986.

On Sunday, April 13, you have a chance to support one of our local high school students in her senior project.  Marissa Bryant-Manago is hosting a 5k fun run starting and finishing at the Kona Community Aquatic Center with a route down Alii Drive.  The race is free, just show up early to sign the necessary waiver and get a number.

The following weekend hosts two of West Hawaii's iconic events.  On Saturday, head down to Honaunau for the 32nd Annual Mac-A-Thon 5k/10k.  While the course is challenging, the macadamia nut pancake breakfast that follows is well worth it!  On Sunday, you can burn off the rest of those pancakes with Peaman's CarboMan 10-miler, Roadrunner 3.5-mile Romp or the 1-mile Mighty Mouse Scamper (no swim in this one!).

The event on the last weekend of the month is not for the weak.  Team Mango's Escape-2-Pu'uhonua heads back down to Honaunau Bay for a 1/2 mile ocean swim followed by a 2 mile trail run.  Then it's on to the bike for a 21 mile hilly bike with a 2,000 foot climb. Finally you finish off with a hot 4-mile run towards Kealekekua Bay. More details and course maps are available at teammangoraces.com.

Running on Air

Last month we introduced New Balance running shoes to the stores.  This month we're adding another running brand, Hoka One One.  You've probably seen people wearing these shoes around - they're the ones that look like crazy moon shoes.  But obviously those thick soles serve a purpose.  The extra cushion in the midsole provides superior comfort, while the larger outsole provides more stability.  Even with all that cushioning, they are still surprisingly lightweight.

You can now find their newest shoe, the Conquest, at both locations.  We also have the Stinson Tarmac at Alii Drive and the lighterweight Bondi at Kaloko.
Come see how comfortable running can be!

Big Island International Marathon Recap

2014 was a year of changes for the Big Island International Marathon, as well as some weather-related challenges!  The weekend kicked off on Saturday morning with the Health and Fitness Expo and the big topic of conversation was what the weather would be like for the race.  With wind warnings and rain projected, everyone was stocking up on hats and Bodyglide.  The weather didn't keep people away from the Carbo-Load dinner on Saturday night, though, as a packed ballroom got their pasta fill, watched some entertaining hula dancers and won some great prizes.

The wind whistled through the night, while race director Bob Wedemann made final preparations.  He adjusted the courses this year so that all runners started from Bayfront instead of shuttling people out to a start in Pepeeko.  The course ran north on the highway before venturing off onto the Old Scenic Road. At the start/finish line, the tents used for post-race refreshments and massage became a twisted mess, but the rain didn't start in full force until just after the gun went off for the half marathon. At some point the wind took the finish line banners down, too.  But the runners still had smiles on their faces and got to see some amazing rainbows.

Big Island Running Company group members represented well with several top finishes in the half marathon - Brian Pruitt (3rd Overall), James Resor (1st in his AG), Ben Halpern (2nd in his AG), John Ferdico (3rd in his AG), Don Kirby (1st in his AG), Jon Kunitake (1st in his AG), and Sarah Nicola (2nd in her AG). Congratulations to all of the participants and mahalo to all of the volunteers who braved the weather to make it a first-class event!
