Holiday Giving

How much stuff do we need?

Here comes Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years, etc., EFTer! It's filled with lots of giving and receiving. It can be such a magical time of year... with only a few little drawbacks.

The parts I want to concentrate on are the "before": the gift buying and the aftermath: the gifts themselves.

The "Present" Pressure

In our Western culture, we are very big on making sure that Consumers consume which, around holiday time, means buying many huge, expensive gifts. The authentic sentiment behind it is very compelling; the pleasure of making another person happy by giving them something they want.

The drawback to this is that, with our limited ability to recycle and our insane amounts of waste each year (approx. 3-5 kgs/6-11 lbs per person per day!), we need to find more sustainable ways of showing our love and appreciation for each other.

I know it’ll come as a bit of a shock but I’m not going to treat this challenge with EFT. Instead, I’m going to suggest adopting more creative options in gift giving. My own favourite present for people I know well and want to spend time with is an outing together (a concert, a play, a visit to a special park, a walk through a fun festival, a meal out just the two of us).

The webpage below (especially in the numbered comments at the end) has loads of great gift ideas. As your offering to your family, friends and the rest of the world this holiday season, please consider creating less waste and keeping costs down:

Too Much Stuff (AKA Hoarding)

Jump ahead a few weeks now... So, it’s January 2nd, the holidays are over. You look around your house to find that you have now acquired a lot more stuff, not all of it useful or desired. Let’s face it; many of us don’t need more THINGS. We often have trouble getting rid of the possessions we already have.

Sometimes we just don’t want to upset Great-Aunt Hilda who comes once a year, so we leave the “lovely” bauble she gave us 10 years ago on the mantelpiece. Other times we hold on to things as a way to stay connected to people who are no longer with us even though we don’t really use, like or need the items.

Alina Frank wrote this great article outlining her work with two clients who were hoarding. I know that you’re saying, “I’m not a hoarder” but maybe when you read the article you might recognize some of your own reasons for buying or accumulating objects that you don’t really need. Even if it's to a lesser extent, it's worth looking at.

Maybe it’s time to let go. It’s a very freeing experience, living with less.

I wish you an amazing holiday season and all the best in 2015! I sincerely hope our paths cross again soon.

Until next time, I send you big hugs,

Kelly.
