Meet Our First Ever Scheller Sustainability Fellows

Last year we announced the launch of the Scheller Sustainability Fellows program and it has been exciting to work with our first class of MBA Fellows! Below, each one has shared some reflections on the impact the Fellows program has had on them.

Hrishikesh Joshi describes his experience as "the vehicle through which I developed a very good understanding of the objectives, needs, and challenges involved in the adoption of sustainability strategies by businesses." In addition to the self-study for his Fellows project, Hrishikesh was able to attend events, get to know organizations, make networking connections, and compete in case competitions as a result of the exposure from the program and his relationship with the Center.

Elizabeth Schultz says she has "developed a more succinct grasp of sustainable business." Her Fellows project gave her the opportunity to talk to multiple executives and grow her network as well as have the support of faculty to guide her to continue her research. "The fellowship allowed me the opportunity to work on a subject I am very passionate about as well as the resources to keep me continuing on my path."

"The fellowship is a great way to get directly connected to the sustainability efforts at the business school," says Sylvester Ashok, who focused on  international development for his Fellows project. This led him to learning and researching a great deal on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. "I was immediately opened to a world of opportunity—as a business student—that helped solidify my career aspirations."

Faculty Publication Spotlight

Environmentally Responsible Supply Chains, edited by Associate Professor of Operations Management and Center affiliated faculty member Atalay Atasu, was published. The book highlights what it takes to be successful in identifying and executing environmental responsibility from an operational perspective and includes cutting-edge research from globally recognized experts, including Scheller College faculty Basak Kalkanci, Necati Terayagoglu, and Beril Toktay.

Sudheer Chava's paper Environmental Externalities and Cost of Capital, published in Management Science, was profiled by the Network for Business Sustainability (NBS). The article, Risky Business, is based on Chava's research examining the relationship  between environmental performance and cost of capital for over 13,000 firms during a 15-year period. It shows that environmentally risky firms must pay higher interest rates to banks and higher returns to shareholders. Chava is a Professor of Finance and a Center affiliated faculty member.
