SANTA CRUZ SHAKESPEARE COMES TO THE TANNERY

Santa Cruz Shakespeare (SCS) will begin its 2016 season a kick-off celebration at Radius Gallery on Friday, May 6, ahead of a move to The Grove at DeLaveaga Park planned for July 2016.

Meet Artistic Director Mike Ryan and other artists, and learn about the 2016 shows — “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Hamlet” — during the celebration, a First Friday Santa Cruz event. Also, presale tickets will be available for SCS members in advance of public ticket sales beginning May 16.

"We are excited to partner again with Radius Gallery. First Fridays are one of the best nights to be at the Tannery, among the talented Santa Cruz artists and their work,” said Aimee Zygmonski, Managing Director of Santa Cruz Shakespeare. “Santa Cruz Shakespeare wanted to be part of the excitement happening monthly in the open galleries and the new Colligan Theater. We couldn't think of a better time to come to the Tannery."

The kick-off celebration will be 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 6, at Radius Gallery, 1050 River St. #127. The event is free and open to the public. There will be cupcakes from Buttercup Cakes and wine by Sones Cellars.

SCS also will begin this season’s performances at the Tannery. Jewel Theatre Company, in collaboration with SCS, will start a four-week run of Lanford Wilson’s “Talley’s Folly” at Colligan Theater on Thursday, May 5. The production features Equity actors Christopher Reber and Monica West under the direction of Ryan, Artistic Director at SCS. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 8 p.m. Saturday; and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5-29.  Get tickets online.

SCS, rooted in Santa Cruz, California, is preparing to celebrate its third season as an independent non-profit theatre company. Inspired by Shakespeare, SCS creates and strengthens community by bringing audiences and theater artists together to celebrate stories about our collective humanity. SCS envisions a community where generations are increasingly passionate and knowledgeable about Shakespeare and live theatre, a community that engages in active discussion about language and art and reaches for passion, connection, and empowerment. SCS also is a recipient of an Arts Council Support Grant, a competitive grant for nonprofit arts organizations.

SCS’s 2016 summer repertory season performances begin July 12 and play through Aug. 28 at its new home in The Grove at DeLaveaga Park, 501 Upper Park Road in Santa Cruz.

DANCE STUDIO SPACE TRIPLES

Tannery World Dance & Cultural Center (TWDCC) expanded to a 3,200-square-foot space. Located adjacent to its current studio, the new Studio #110 is divided into three separate spaces for classes and rehearsals. It opens onto the Tannery Courtyard and features a 1,400-square-foot fully-sprung maple dance floor and two smaller studios with Rosco flooring, doubling the space available in TWDCC’s previous Tannery studio.

“The additional space allows us to have more classes for students, community classes like West African and Samba, and private rehearsal space for the performing arts,” said Executive Director Cat Willis. “As a cultural center, we also host people who are rehearsing for theater and need practice space. There are a lot of mediums that can happen in our space — more opportunity.”

TWDCC will host a grand opening celebration and community dance party Saturday, May 28.
Troy Stafford recently joined the Working Studios at the Tannery. Visit him in studio #128.

TROY STAFFORD, WOODWORKER, JOINS WORKING STUDIOS

Troy Stafford creates beautiful, handmade furniture and gilded frames. His work can be seen around the world, from international publications to the Norman Rockwell Museum and as close as Boulder Creek.

“I am inspired by a found object, rusty bit or an antique piece,” Stafford said. “I combine the traditional method of furniture and frame making in a contemporary piece. A lot of what I do is not traditional since I was self-taught in this industry.”

When Stafford and his family moved to Santa Cruz two years ago he tried to get a studio at the Tannery. Every Working Studio was leased, so he put his name on the waiting list. He recently signed his lease and now has set up shop. Now Studio #128 is filled with workbenches, tabernacle samples and materials for traditional water gilding. Stafford's background in assemblage art influences his restoration work.

Stafford's recent projects have included restoration work for The Conservation Center of the Institute of Fine Arts NYC, a period tabernacle frame for Sandro Botticelli's "The Nativity" at The Columbia Museum of Art and a carved frame for work by Vincent Van Gogh at the De Young Museum.
