It’s that time of year again and this summer One Shakti will be hosting their 7th annual 108 Sun Salutations event. This year we’re calling on your support to help us achieve the target of £12,410 to fund the creation of a much needed permanent school in the tribal village of Thanimaruthur, Tamil Nadu state of India.
This year’s event will be held on Saturday 2nd July at 8.00am – Midday at the Swaminarayan Temple Stanmore. Subject to weather the event will be outdoors to the sounds of nature, chanting, and live ambient music. We warmly invite you to join us for an enlightening day being connected with Mother Nature.
The Sun Salutation is a series of Yoga postures practised in a flowing sequence promoting physical, mental and spiritual health. In most yoga session only a few rounds are conducted. On this day our team of experienced One Shakti instructors will guide you gracefully through the postures and sequences. Having some experience of yoga and Sun Salutation practice will help but is not a pre-requisite - together we will accomplish the 108 sets.
A worthy cause - Rural School for Thanimaruthur
This year One Shakti is supporting Shishukunj International Projects and have chosen to support one of its project, Sebastian Hunter Memorial Trust (SEB). Shishukunj International Projects (SIP), part of Shishukunj London focuses, on providing support to relieve distress and poverty in children throughout the world. www.shishukunj.org.uk/SIP
Sebastian Hunter Memorial Trust (Sebs Trust) shares many of the same principle as Shishukunj, and works with some of the poorest communities across South India. Through their projects, they reach out to those in the tribal hill regions - in centres and rural villages affected by disease, disability, and drought - to empower leaders, build the skills of the next generation, and works towards a poverty-free India. www.sebsschool.org
Our target for this year’s 108 Sun Salutation event is to raise £12,410 and together raise funds for the much needed permanent rural school in Thanimaruthur - a tribal village in the Tamil Nadu state of India. It currently has a temporary school with 43 students and is run in a small room provided by a widow in the village. Some of the Children who attend the temporary school walk 45 minutes each day from the neighbouring villages and it is extremely encouraging to see their enthusiasm for education as many of these children are first generation learners.
A permanent school is now a real need here, and more students are due to enrol in June and the current space is not fit for purpose. The local community have come forward to provide a space to build the school and have also offered to help by providing the required labour. All that they now need is our help to raise £12,410 to turn this project into a reality for these children and future generations.
