Hi <<First Name>>, Dr. Larrow's November Newsletter is here!

Practice Updates:

Previous Newsletters

I thought I'd post some hard-links to the previous few months of Newsletters to help those who are unaware of Dr. Larrow's upcoming maternity leave. This will hopefully help get everyone up to speed with their treatment options moving into the first part of 2016.

There's some important information in them regarding a preliminary schedule of when Dr. Larrow will, and will not, be available. Also whom we have lined up to help you if you are in need of a Naturopathic Doctor visit in person while Dr. Larrow is on maternity leave. I will also make the information more prominent on the website for December through February as well:

A New And Much Easier Payment Option

For those who we regularly mail out to, we are now using Square's online invoicing for many as an alternative to mailing a check (but you can still do that of course), or taking a credit card by phone. Especially in the case of the latter, there is no messy sign-up, or login to remember. You need only receive the invoice by email when we send it, click through (see image below...) to the secure Square page, and enter your CC details as needed. That's it!

I will, of course, give you some payment options ahead of time to let you choose. If you have any questions then please do not hesitate to email, or call me at 1-415-912-9934.

Dr. Larrow's October Blogs

This past month, Dr. Larrow blogged about restaurants and antibiotics, lower back pain, and more!

October 8th - Essential Food Prep - ...When it comes to the dried fruit you should look for sulfite free fruits while making sure no sugar has been added (it’s fruit, come on, does it really need more sugar?). With some planning you could buy fresh fruits, and dehydrate them yourself while storing them to be used later...

October 14th - Antibiotic Treated Meat In Restaurants - ...The scary thing is all but 5, yes I typed 5, restaurants received a failing grade. The two best restaurants, according to this paper, were Panera and Chipotle. Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s, and Dunkin Donut where the other three restaurants that passed with a B, C, and another C respectively...

October 21st - The Last 10 Years Of Life - ...people over the age of 65 (both males and females) the CDC showed that 89.8% were on a least one prescription medication within the previous 30 days of answering, 64.8% of this same age group answered with 3 or more, and 39.1% showed 5 or more...

October 28th - Lower Back Pain And Palliative Care - ...Teaching a patient certain stretches/exercises that they can do to help alleviate their symptoms while the body heals can help the patient feel like they are doing something to help them get back to normal life...

Before You Eat That Candy...

I hope you all had a safe and fun Halloween, and that you remembered to turn back your clocks too.

Now, I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but all that candy you collected, passed out, and ate this weekend can wreak havoc on the immune system (lets not forget our waistlines too!). Lets also not forget how unhealthy most of these candies are in general. The Environmental Working Group has their Food Scores for foods that we should check a lot more than we do. With their Food Scores, EWG looks at nutritional, ingredient, and processing concerns for foods, and scores them from 1 to 10 where 10 is the worst.

They have separated the foods out into categories, and I spent some time this past weekend looking at the candy list. We all know candy is not good for us, but I was amazed that the best score any of the candy got was a 4 while most were 6, or higher. Just because something says organic does not mean that it is good for us. For example, Justin’s Organic Peanut Butter Cups, the Milk Chocolate variety, recieved a 7.0. The nutritional concerns are high for these cups because of high sugar, high saturated fat content, and caloric density. However, it is important to point out that ingredient concerns are low because it is an organic product so they cannot use antibiotics in the dairy used in the peanut butter cup’s production. The processing concerns are considered moderate in this case as these cups are not naturally found in nature, which should go without saying of course, and needed to be created.

As we continue into the holidays, please take some time to look at the Food Scores of your desired items and ingredients when you are looking at foods to choose healthier options. The Food Score app can also be downloaded for both iOS and Android for quick reference when you are at the store.

It is important come holiday time, like now, that we truly begin to, or reintroduce, better quality foods and ingredients into our diets. It can't hurt, and can only help us for the beginning of next year when many of us begin our goals anew.

Thank you, and please have a good and healthy start to your holiday season.
