Digital Pedagogy Lab Cairo:
an AMICAL Institute

20-23 March 2016
American University in Cairo

Dear AMICAL Representatives,

AMICAL is proud to sponsor an event focusing on digital pedagogy, the thoughtful application of technology in teaching, to be held this Spring at the American University in Cairo. Open to a number of Cairo institutions but principally targeting AMICAL members, this event is one of several consortially-supported actions this year building momentum for one of AMICAL's 2015-2018 strategic priorities: Curriculum-Integrated Digital Initiatives.

Please note the target group below ("For Whom?") and share the announcement with any local colleagues that might fit this profile.

Looking forward to seeing many AMICAL colleagues at AUC this March!

Unique International Professional Development Opportunity

The international Digital Pedagogy Lab (DPL) institute comes to Cairo, facilitated by some of the leading and most compelling voices in the field, pushing at the edges of critical digital pedagogy. Join the institute and get involved in some intense and inspiring conversations about teaching and learning in the digital age. For example:

How can we build platforms that support learning across age, race, culture, gender, ability, geography? What are the specific affordances and limitations of technology toward these ends? - Jesse Stommel

Digital Pedagogy Lab (DPL) Cairo: an AMICAL Institute

DPL Cairo is sponsored by AMICAL and the Ford Foundation and organized by the Center for Learning and Teaching at AUC. There will be space for a total of 50 participants (at least 15 places will be reserved for AMICAL members outside of AUC). Participation will entail committing to the full 3-day event, after which participants will receive a certificate. AMICAL members are encouraged to also attend the unconference on March 23.

DPL Cairo is a practical professional development opportunity that helps prepare learners, educators, librarians, administrators, and others to teach and work with digital technology. Participants will practice hands-on solutions for the common challenges teachers and learners face when working digitally. However, this will not be simply a 3-day tutorial. Instead, Digital Pedagogy Lab Cairo will ground itself in philosophical and theoretical discussions of digital technology, identity, and pedagogy.

A Unique Learning Community

The learning community we create together will be welcoming to a wide range of skill levels and interests. Participants attending the entire event will choose one of two tracks and work collaboratively with a cohort in small peer-driven classes. Additional participants will join us for keynotes and drop-in workshops. At the end of the day on the 22nd, participants will have the opportunity to give brief lightning talks, pose lingering questions to the group, share example assignments, or briefly demo useful tools. Our hope is that this will help frame the discussions and activities that continue during the Unconference on the 23rd.

Participants will work with an international team of faculty from the United States, Egypt, and Canada, including Jesse StommelBonnie StewartMaha BaliSean Michael Morris, and Amy Collier. The unconference will be co-facilitated by David Joseph Wrisley of the American University of Beirut and Maha Bali of AUC.

About Digital Pedagogy Lab

Digital Pedagogy Lab has grown out of the educational outreach efforts of the journal and non-profit Hybrid Pedagogy, and offers other institutes as well as online professional development courses and will soon be announcing a certificate program in Critical Digital Pedagogy in collaboration with partner institutions. The Cairo event will have its own certificate, but also count towards the certificate program.

TRACKS

(1) Praxis. Facilitators: Amy Collier and Sean Michael Morris

Pedagogy is praxis, the intersection between the philosophy and practice of teaching

Pedagogy is praxis, the intersection between the philosophy and practice of teaching. It involves reflecting on and actively investigating the work of teaching and learning. In this track, we will explore philosophies of teaching, our own and others. We will think specifically about the ways our pedagogies are reflected in the specific choices we make as teachers. We will discuss and experiment with various technological tools from the chalkboard to moveable chairs, computers, mobile devices, social media platforms, and learning management systems. Individual sessions and workshops will focus on teaching philosophies, discernment practices for using digital tools in courses, emergent learning, digital composition, and discussions of the impact of the digital on traditional and critical pedagogies.

(2) Networks. Facilitators: Bonnie Stewart and Jesse Stommel

Networked learning, from blogs and Twitter to open courses and collaboration

This track will focus on the nature of digital networks and network-building, from blogs and social media to open courses and collaboration. It will include discussions of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), rhizomatic learning, how influence and reputation circulate in professional learning networks, the social contracts of closed and networked spaces, and the intersections between networks and face-to-face learning environments. We’ll especially focus on Twitter as an experimental space for thinking about how networks are both responding to and creating the Internet as a learning environment. Individual sessions and workshops will introduce tools and hybrid approaches that can help build learning communities that extend beyond the bounds of the classroom. Participants will also explore the challenges, risks, and benefits of having learners collaborating openly on the web.

Funding Opportunities

Application is open to faculty, librarians, instructional technologists, faculty developers and graduate students at AMICAL institutions. Approximately 15 AMICAL participants (outside of AUC) will be eligible for AMICAL funding as follows:
  • Institute registration fee (waived)
  • Basic travel expenses (economy airfare - the more reasonable this amount, the more likely you are to get funded)
  • On-campus faculty housing accommodations for the nights of March 19-22 (these are apartments where you would have your own room, but share the apartment with others of the same gender).
  • Group meals during the event
Should you receive AMICAL funding, you will be expected to commit to the following:
  • Report briefly (1-2 paragraphs) on the event within 6 months following the institute, for possible publication on AMICAL’s blog
  • Locally, take your learning back to your own institution, and have impact through workshops, newsletters, etc.
  • Consortially, share some of what you have learned or how you have applied it through conference presentations/panels/workshops related to digital pedagogy at other AMICAL events, webinars, etc. in the year following the institute (we are aiming for at least 5 of these - you can collaborate with other AMICAL members on a panel or joint presentation)
There may also space for around 5-10 self-funded AMICAL participants who would be asked to pay a nominal fee of only $50 (for comparison, the full registration fee of the first Digital Pedagogy Lab Institute in the US was $1,000).
