Last Guest Speaker

Rebecca Wilkings talked about her time in Niue as a dive Instructor. She had a great time and met a lot of interesting dive clients. Rebecca explained the type of diving they were doing and it sounded really exciting - as were a couple of her dive boat adventures. The photos were so good, the projector bulb blew just at the conclusion of her presentation.
There was a very good turn out. It was an excellent presention and we all enjoyed it, Thank you Becks..

Next Guest Speaker

To set the scene for the Easter trip north, Tony will give a presentation on one of the famous shipwrecks at Great Barrier Island. The wrecking of SS Wairarapa was New Zealand's third worst shipwreck ever. This will be entertaining and educational so book a seat!

Be here on Wednesday night for this inspiring talk.  All are welcome, whether divers or not. We present certificates as well. Bring something for the BBQ and a shared meal (beer or wine etc as well if you wish).

A Sad Farewell
On Tuesday, Dave Cox and his wife Jan were diving in Owhiro Bay. The conditions were great and they were both looking forward to the dive. During the dive Jan indicated she was having difficulty and signaled for them to ascend. Jan asked for help in loosening her BCD. Dave started to tow her to the exit but her condition worsened. Dave got her onto the rocks and commenced CPR while calling for help. A local arrived with a boat and Jan was taken to shore where an ambulance waited. The medics tried their best but sadly Jan did not recover. Dave is a very experienced diver and qualified Divemaster who has been diving for years while Jan is a certified Advanced Open Water Diver. Jan could not have been in better hands. Our deepest sympathies go to Dave and his family. We have lost one of our family too.

Max's Column

Max is our Dive Crew's resident spy, always on the lookout for any oops moments you might have.  Check out what he has spotted this month..
  • Some dives are memorable for all the wrong reasons. Lucky help was available to untangle a Rebreather diver’s cable!
  • To make it worse, in the coffee shop we had to advise the nearly 53 year old he had his T shirt on inside out.
  • Happy 53rd  birthday James. It might get better from here.
  • Tony was back into the water after recovering from a bad case of the flu. Took a long time.
  • Sue was also back in the water too but it had been 20 years since her last NZ dive.
  • Don’t know if you saw double Sue but the sticker was still on your new mask lens.
  • The best time to have a battery failure is on a shallow Scuba dive that you know sooo well.
  • At least on tony’s Rebreather there are two Shearwaters.
  • Wayne’s landmark van has gone – replaced by a flash Toyota Avi station wagon.
  • Wayne is a very keen man – three days diving over our long weekend.
  • Before a dive we go through the security issue of hiding the car key. We had two cars and two groups of divers.
  • One of the passengers exited before the driver. He found the second car key then searched the car for the key to the car his clothes were in.
  • Sadly this time they were both  hidden separately.
  • Claudia is a nearly-brand-new Rescue diver. We were quite careful not to make any signs that might be misinterpreted as distress.
  • Perhaps we should have let you practice on Liam’s stress fractured toe Claudia.
  • Great to see Chris back on the Rebreather learning trail after an enforced break.
  • Even better that you are adding a Shearwater NERD computer – it is in the way.
  • Who was the dive guide who nearly got to the wreck of the Progress?
  • The group were quite puzzled when the guide decided he was lost – within sight of the boiler.
  • Mind you, the diver that knew they were close – just followed on.
  • It made for a conversation piece over coffee, more like denials.
  • An enthusiastic group of Open Water Diver students got half way back from the dive site and decided to let the turbo hose on the van they all packed into expire.
  • A Rescue Diver operation of a different sort was put into action and all were duly rescued...
  • ... shortly afterward they limped in with dive gear in hand totally unfazed, washed up, got certified and bought new dive gear of their own!!
  • Peter and Evan stumble across an unusually high number of fish while diving at Rocky Bay (they should try finning!)
  • Max, Matt and Peter saw another After Work dive filled with underwater life...
  • Unusual dive trio spotted on the South Coast - one single cylinder diver, one sidemounted diver (two cylinders), one breather diver (three cylinders).
  • Some early teens blended in well with the adults to get their Junior Open Water Diver certifications recently....  ;)  Good effort Angus, Aslan, Tom and Anneke!
  • Jess and Ellie forgot who's name was who's while doing their pool lessons...
  • ...luckily everyone else was on the ball.
  • And to those who had birthdays recently: James D., Kevin, James T, Malcolm, Frankie, Andrew, Amelia, Roland and Paula.  Happy Birthday!!!
