Nancy Berkley7 NEW TRENDS FOR WOMEN'S GOLF

Over 40,000 people visited the convention hall at the annual PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida, January 27-29. It attracts buyers and sellers from all over the world.  I have attended the Show for many years and here are seven trends I observed:

Trend #1 The game of golf is in an “up-tick” mode

The U.S. and world stock market may be having jitters, but golf seems to be on solid fairways. There was more energy in the air at this year’s show than in any of the past several years.

Trend #2 – More equipment manufacturers are paying more attention to women golfers

Callaway announced it was “seriously” investing in women’s golf and introduced its new line incorporating Boeing technology to produce light-weight woods for women.

Trend #3 –  New approaches to junior golf

Two major shifts in instruction are:
(1) It’s okay to introduce golf to 3 year-olds (in fact, Little Golf T.R.A.I.N. begins at age 2); and
(2) the emphasis is on fun and positive social experiences -- not on performance.

Michelle WieTrend #4 – Women’s golf clothes more stylish than ever

This season expect skorts with ruffles and even lace.  And, even better hi-tech and comfy fabrics.  Look for tops and bottoms that have matching prints or textures that mimic the look of a dress and provide a complimentary all-in-one look.

Trend #5 –  Less distinction between women’s golf clothes and women’s fitness clothes

Can I wear tights from a fitness manufacturer under my golf-brand golf skort? Let’s not forget how fantastic the U.S. Women’s Solheim Cup team looked in their red, white and blue patriotic tights!  So, finally, golf and fitness have merged and several golf brands have skorts with matching tights or leggings.

Trend #6 – More golf for more business women

In the nineties, practicing law and marketing, I always won the women’s longest drive at corporate golf outings because I was the only woman playing golf!  But today there are many more women in senior business positions.  So it’s no surprise that a feature on the main stage at the PGA Show was a presentation:  “A New Context for Business Golf.”  The message was clear that being able to play golf with colleagues – male or female – was important.  So, it’s a good time to ask your boss for time off and tuition money for a good golf school.

Trend #7More golf travel

From resorts, to travel agencies to travel products and to countries, there were more of them this year at the show than I remember. I enjoyed looking at Mexico, Ireland, Scotland and even Turkey as golf travel destinations. I’m packed!
