It's not too late to register for this workshop, taking place next Tuesday!

Alternative Food Marketing: Encouraging Local Health Institutions to Buy Local Food
at the PEI Farm Centre,
420 University Ave,
Charlottetown
on Tuesday, March 3,
1:00 pm- 4:00 pm

(Storm Date: Thursday, March 5).

The Sustainable Production and Distribution Working Group of the PEI Food Security Network is hosting a workshop entitled Alternative Food Marketing: Encouraging Local Health Institutions to Buy Local Food.

The workshop will hear a special distance-presentation on institutions opting for a system for getting access to local food in order to supply their cafeteria and dining services. Wayne Roberts, food policy analyst, and Lori Stahlbrand, local-food expert, will share their experiences in the Toronto region where at least one major institution opted for a system of getting access to local food. This involved creating an arrangement between the institution and local producers and distributers, with built-in processes for product quantity-and-quality control and negotiated fair pricing.

The Production and Distribution Working Group is hoping to bring together the knowledge and wisdom of local interests and endeavours. Many groups already have valuable experience in both providing and using high quality local food. People of special interest are food producers, distributers, food buyers in private and public facilities, chefs, policy makers, and the wider community. The workshop’s interactive process will facilitate the sharing of information. It will also venture into the proposing of do-able, effective action to help develop the beginnings of a sustainable system for institutions to access local food. The participants will look at how this could be possible in a sector of PEI’s institutions, made up of both public and private facilities.

All are welcome. To register: email cooperinstitute@eastlink.ca or call 902-894-4573.

13) Canada's Theme for International Women’s Day 2015

International Women’s Day takes place each year on March 8. It is a time for Canadians to celebrate progress toward equality for women and their full participation, reflect on the challenges that remain, and consider future steps to achieving equality for all women.

Canada’s theme for International Women’s Day 2015 – Strong Women. Strong World: Improving Economic Opportunities for All – points to the vital contribution that women make every day to both the domestic and global economy.

All Canadians — women and men, girls and boys — are encouraged to promote International Women's Day / International Women's Week.

16) New Wyatt Heritage Properties Inc. Radio Dramas Now Available Online

Wyatt Heritage Properties Inc. has five new radio dramas online. They were recorded in October as part of the Island Storytelling Festival: New Waves. They feature five Island nurses who served in World War One. Many Island nurses served in the war, but never received much recognition for their service to king and country.  In 2014, the 100th anniversary of the start of the war, Islander Katherine Dewar, wrote the book, Those Splendid Girls, which tells their stories. She allowed Wyatt Heritage Properties Inc. to use her research for the writing of the dramas.

Local volunteer voice actors and foleys were used to record the dramas which can be heard by going to www.wyattheritagepropertiesinc.com or www.culturesummerside.com and pressing on the YouTube icon. The titles of the dramas are: Wounded in War, Lost at Sea, Confronting Shell Shock, John McCrae’s Special Nurse, and Conditions at Salonika. The funding for the project came from Canadian Heritage,  PEI Tourism and Culture, as well as the City of Summerside. The new dramas join the ever growing library of radio dramas produced by Wyatt Heritage Properties Inc. and Culture Summerside. The dramas are based on true Island stories researched through the MacNaught History Centre and Archives. The radio dramas are created by and for the community.

Take a listen and discover this fun way to bring history alive through the arts. Your listening ear will assist in securing future funding to do projects such as this.
