4th Annual Week of Cultural Resistance!!

The Multicultural Community Center & Cross Cultural Student Development are excited to bring you the 4th Annual Week of Cultural Resistance (WoCR)!!!

Our theme this year, “Conspire for Justice,” is an invitation to engage in cultivating communities that live and breathe together so intimately that injustice never goes unnoticed--and therefore never goes unaddressed. Inspired by a lecture given by Ericka Huggins, we acknowledge the power and necessity of collective struggle as a strategy for survival and liberation. We work and dream towards justice for all people(s) by revisiting and envisioning connection to ourselves, to our families, to our communities, to the breathing earth below and sky above. In this Week of Cultural Resistance organizers have created spaces and opportunities to reimagine and conspire for change, for hope, for action, for growth, for joy, and for love.

WoCR aims to bring together on and off campus communities to reflect, and build with each other. This year we have workshops, panels, and skill shares that will bring to the center some important conversations. We invite you to come share and learn with us!

APIICON started in 1990 as a critical space for students, professors, and community members to engage in dialogue about pressing issues and to discusses shared solutions. By bringing underrepresented issues to the forefront, the conference promotes awareness about ethnic diversity and fosters community building among API students. The ultimate goal of this conference is to educate, empower, and organize our communities on API issues.

This year’s theme is COMM(UNITY) IS POWER. 50 years ago, our fragmented API community joined hands to spearhead what was considered one of the greatest activist movements with other communities of color. API involvement in issues pressing people of color was strong, as demonstrated through the Third World Liberation Front and Black Power Movement. However, there has been a lack of allyship and solidarity as seen in controversial issues such as affirmative action and #BlackLivesMatter. This theme reminds us the importance of the power of community when it is unified.

As the current generation of activists, we want to acknowledge the work of API activists before played major roles in building the communities we are a part of now. As APIs grow increasingly visible in media, politics, and education, we can see that the movement continues to expand and touch on new issues through different lenses. What does COMM(UNITY) mean to you?
