Living Together:
Identity, Belonging and Canadian Values

On Thursday, June 25, in Sudbury, Ontario, the CRRF, in association with the Master of Indigenous Relations (MIR) program at Laurentian University, is hosting a national First Nations, Métis, and Inuit consultation. Living Together: Identity, Belonging and Canadian Values is an opportunity to explore ideas and share knowledge about issues of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit identity, belonging and values and their relationship to Canadian identity and values.

Delegates will hear from expert panelists from the local and regional community and are urged to contribute their own perspectives on how we might create a shared vision for the future of Canada. The proceedings of the community consultation will inform the CRRF’s upcoming First Nations, Métis, and Inuit symposium, planned for Toronto in January 2016.

Delegates may attend the Sudbury community consultation in person or via video conferencing.

For more information on the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit community consultation, click here, or contact Suzanne Methot, Project Officer, Aboriginal Peoples at 416-441-2792 or 1-888-240-4936, or via e-mail, smethot@crrf-fcrr.ca.

June Stories: Aboriginal History Month

On June 3rd, read a profile of Olympic athlete and Pan-Am Games gold medalist Waneek Horn-Miller (Mohawk), the Chef de Mission for the 2015 Pan-Am Games.

Other June stories will focus on Snuneymuxw soccer star and Sports Hall of Fame inductee Harry Manson; Native Learning Centre: A classroom where Native youth can work towards a high school diploma through a flexible curriculum; and Cree elder and visionary politician Solomon Sanderson, who introduced the term “First Nations.”

From the Executive Director
Across Canada, May was dedicated to celebrating Asian Heritage Month. CRRF joined in this celebration by publishing the stories of three fascinating Asian Canadians as part of the Our Canada: 150 Stories initiative.

Indeed, this was a month in which we honoured the vast contributions that those of Asian heritage have made to this country. Yet, we must acknowledge that there is much more to do. If we are to truly heed the message of the various months throughout the year which are focused on the many different cultures that make up Canada's diverse population, we must also be committed to countering the racism that still plagues us.
