GOWANUS UPDATE

GOWANUS ARTS DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (GADP): UPDATE

The Design-Development phase of STH’s GADP is now complete and we are currently finishing final interviews with prospective General Contractors to take this project on with the goal of pulling permits in September and beginning the major construction work in October.  Thank you all for your input, support, patience and advice!

ATTENTION: ALL MINORITY & WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES in all the trades

If you are a M/WBE sub-contractor, licensed and registered with the City of New York, we very much want to talk to you about working on our project!   Please forward letters of interest, your expertise, recent contracts,  and client references to: spoke@spokethehub.org.

SHORT TERM WORK SPACES AVAILABLE at GOWANUS ARTS

As we prepare for the Gowanus’ makeover which will happen in two stages in the coming year, there are several workspaces of various sizes which will become available in our building on a month-to-month basis starting September 1st.  There are two ground floor spaces available at least through December 2015, possibly longer, plus dance, art, and office space on the 3rd floor available at least through beginning or mid October.  ($2.50 a square foot, one month security, utilities included.)  For further information and to see these short-term work space possibilities, please contact Lori at: space@spokethehub.org

GET INVOLVED
Our construction loan will only go so far and will not be nearly enough to cover all the improvements we envision for our “new” arts center. Thus, we will need everyone’s help to build an even better community facility for the Gowanus which welcomes, supports, and inspires artists of all genres, local residents, and visitors of all ages and abilities, from the greater metropolitan area, across the country and around the globe. Here's how you can help:
PUT YOUR NAME ON IT

Name That Step: $100

Have your name etched on a metal “name tag” to be installed on one of the steps of our new “Stairway to Heaven”. This stairwell will safely take guests from the new theater’s green room in the basement all the way up to the new “Gowanus Sky Farm” on the roof.

Name That Tile: $150

Have your name glazed on a ceramic tile created by Claire Weissberg of Claireware Pottery and imbedded in one of the many mosaics that are bound to re-emerge somewhere in the “new” Gowanus.

Special Name Tiles: $1000

Have your name prominently displayed in the new “Angel Wall” mosaic to be created by Elise Long and friends in honor of the most generous STH "angels" who have made our work possible for the last 36 years.

Name That Seat: $400

Have your name etched on a metal “name tag” to be affixed to one of the new cushy theater seats we hope to install in our ADA compliant theater/event space. Enjoy future performances at the Gowanus in comfort - no more hard, metal folding chairs!

CREATIVE CARPENTERS, CRAFTSPEOPLE, ARTISTS WANTED

We are seeking very creative and resourceful carpenter, artists, sculptors, craftspeople, welders who love working with found or existing objects and giving them a new context and utility.  We are particularly seeking artisans and craftspeople who work in glass, metal, wood, stone and concrete who would be interested in working with us to create original stain glass windows, bike racks, lighting fixtures, roof railings, benches, counters and other furniture and who might be interested in using our arts center as an ongoing “living” showcase for their work. Please send letters of interest and website links to: spoke@spokethehub.org

One of the goals in the Gowanus renovation is to recycle and re-use as most of the materials that currently are part of our existing building.  This will include upcycling the original wooden stairs, some of the beautiful oak columns which need to be re-moved, the current hallway mosaic, and bricks from the walls where new windows will be punched in among other materials.

NEW GALLERY & ARTISTS COLLECTIVE PLANNING MEETING

Current plans for the new ADA compliant Gowanus ground floor include two new gallery spaces - one for exhibits in a more traditional gallery setting, and another area for presenting less traditional work that will include installations, hanging work, time sensitive work, mixed media and interactive performance work.

In addition, we will be forming a new “Artists’ Collective” which will guarantee members a regular gallery showing each season and other perks throughout - details to be fleshed out in the coming months with your input.

If you are a professional visual artist interested in becoming a member of the new collective and would like to have some input into its structure at this formative stage, please contact:  spoke@spokethehub.org and request to be put on our ARTISTS GALLERY & COLLECTIVE PLANNING MEETING email list.

THE GOWANUS SKY FARM PLANNING MEETING

Thanks to Gwen Schantz at Brooklyn Grange and the DEP, Spoke the Hub will be creating a mini “farm” on the roof of our soon to be renovated Gowanus Arts center.  We hope to use the farm to host some of our special cultural events and educational programs;  to teach sustainable living practices and a permaculture philosophy;  to offer healthy cooking and nutrition classes;  to provide a green “oasis” for our students, parents and artists to relax in;  and to grow fresh produce to use in our own catered events.  To sustain the farm, we will also need “farmers” and garden members to be our on-site stewards.  If you are interested in becoming a member of this farm, and helping us “shape” the farm protocol and administrative structure, please contact:  spoke@spokethehub.org and request to be put on our GOWANUS SKY FARM PLANNING MEETING email list.
