Updates from the Kentville Development Corporation Ltd (KDCL) As part of our objective to help build a vibrant and growing economy in Kentville, we have formed the following groups and programs which are currently underway:
The Kentville Downtown Merchants Group ~ working to promote and support merchant and service providers in the downtown core.
The Media & Arts Collective ~ working to create opportunity and collaboration among media, arts and creative service professionals in our area.
The Kentville Way Program ~ working to insure a welcoming community culture, spirit and pride of place.
The Downtown Building Façade Program ~ proposed assistance for commercial property owners to upgrade their buildings to create exciting and appealing streetscapes.

Kentville Merchants Group’s Downtown Kentville “Friend-raiser” The Kentville merchants group is selling tickets on a beautiful painting done by well known artist Ed Hollett depicting a downtown streetscape circa 1885.
Anyone wishing to view the painting or purchase tickets to win it can visit Kentville Businesses from now until September 30th. Tickets are $10.00 each or 3 for $25.00. Funds raised through the initiative will help the Merchants Group run similar downtown shopping promotions and support the ongoing operations of the newly formed group. Learn more
Kentville Multicultural Fair - A Big Success! On Sunday, August 30, 2015 KDCL hosted the first Kentville Multicultural Fair. The event was a success beyond the expectations of the organizers. Over 400 visitors and participants enjoyed a full program of very professional entertainment and presentations. A dozen vendors provided food and products from a variety of cultures. Word is most vendors “sold out”. They were very pleased!

Build-your-own-Skateboard-Deck Workshops This fall, woodworker Michael DeLuca will be working with Kentville Recreation to offer a series of Build-your-own-Skateboard-Deck workshops, for adults and youth. This is some fine woodworking that looks so nice, you’ll want to put it on your wall rather than ride it. All materials and equipment will be provided. Skateboarding lessons are optional, but certainly available at no extra cost. We provide all the safety gear for that too.

Kelly Westhaver moved to Kentville 8 years ago as her husband Brian was working here. Previously, they were living in Glen Margaret, down by Peggy’s Cove. "I lost 90% of my sight due to glaucoma, thus my ability to drive; we thought it best for us to move closer to Brian’s work and somewhere there was a bus route so I could be mobile. I love living in Kentville because of the welcoming community; CentreStage Theatre was and still is one of our favourite places, they made it feel like home here. We love the coffee shops and the pubs, the trails and of course Miner’s Marsh. It is such a gem that we were lucky enough to find and now to call home."
Salmon Phyllo Coulibiac
2 thin salmon fillets (1lb)
½ t salt
1c white wine or fish stock
1c fish stock
3 T Cornstarch
2/3 c sour cream
½ c butter
5 Green onions chopped
2pkgs -10oz frozen spinach thawed& squeezed dry
¼ t pepper and nutmeg
Rice Filling
1 c long grain rice
½ t salt, 1 egg
¼ c milk
3 T chopped fresh dill
1 ½ t lemon rind
In a saucepan bring 2c water to a boil; add rice and salt. Reduce heat to low, cover& cook for 20 mins or until rice is tender & water is absorbed. Let cool to room temperature. In a bowl, beat egg with milk, stir in rice, dill and lemon rind. Cover & refrigerate.
Salmon
Place salmon in a large non stick skillet and sprinkle salt. Pour in wine and stock, cover and cook over medium heat for 7 mins or until fish flakes easily. With a slotted lifter transfer to plate to let cool, remove skin and flake fish, place in separate bowl.
Sauce
Strain cooking liquid into liquid measure, add enough cold water if necessary to make 1 1/3 c. Pour into small saucepan. Blend cornstarch with 2T water & stir into cooking liquid. Cook over medium heat, stirring until thickened. Let cool slightly, stir in sour cream. Let cool completely.
Spinach
In a large non stick skillet heat 2 T of butter over med heat, cook onions and spinach stirring often for 5 mins or until onions are tender. Season with pepper and nutmeg and remaining salt. Let cool
Phyllo
Melt butter and brush each sheet of phyllo arrange overlapping in 9” springform pan. 5 sheets bottom. Layer as follows:
RICE FILLING
SAUCE
SPINACH
SAUCE
SALMON
Then 4 remaining sheets.
Bake 350 F 50-60 mins or until golden
Makes 8 servings
Historical Moment
Everett Ward and his Mansion Everett Ward was a self-made man. The story starts in 1890 when Everett joined the R.C.M.P. and was posted to Klondike, Yukon where he got in on the gold rush. Finding enough, he was able to buy his way out of the RCMP and returned to Kentville in 1899. Here he married Elizabeth Redden and the two of them, plus his three brothers returned for another go at the gold rush and within five years had built up enough fortune to return once again to Kentville.
The most impressive thing that Everett built was Ward mansion on Beech Hill at the top of Prospect Avenue. This was a two-story brick house covered in stucco with an open colonnaded veranda, large oak doors, mahogany paneling and many large fireplaces.
Upon Mrs. Ward’s death, the house remained vacant for a good many years until in 1964 Mr. Robert Healy purchased the property with plans to restore the mansion. All the woodwork had been carefully removed and stored for reuse. However, in the renovation process a rubbish fire outside got out of control and burnt the entire property to the ground – including the salvaged wood carvings. Nothing remained, for you see, being at the top of the hill, no telephone was handy to call for help. When the fire department did arrive they were hampered by the lack of water at the top of the hill. Eventually, water had to be pumped to the scene by a chain of fire trucks connecting with the nearest hydrant.

CentreStage Presents: Much More Munsch Fall in love with Robert Munsch all over again in September! CentreStage Theatre is delighted to once again bring the magic of these stories to the stage, Much More Munsch.
The children will be invited to interact with the stories as they come alive before their eyes! The stories will include Mortimer, The Paperbag Princess, Angela¹s Airplane, Pigs, Mud Puddle.
The stories have written by Robert Munsch and adapted by Irene Watts.

Kings County Historical Museum: Kentville museum exhibit features a ‘brief’ history of underwear!
As society has changed and evolved, so has our underwear.
The Kings Historical Society presents A ‘Brief’ History of Underwear at the Kings County Museum in Kentville from late September to December. The exhibit focuses on the century between 1850 and 1950 and how culture influenced the development of undergarments over that time period. Read more
Citizen Question
Question: What can we do about the traffic by the Tim Hortons drive thru? Can we prevent cars from parking in the middle of the road while they wait to pull in to the drive-thru Tim Horton’s in Kentville? Just because you need your Timmies doesn’t mean you get to prevent traffic from moving.
Answer: Unfortunately, it is what it is. It doesn’t matter why traffic backs up, if it’s backed up it’s backed up, whether it’s a busy time for a drive thru, or traffic at the rink because of the Home Show or a hockey tournament.
The Town extended the third lane on Aberdeen Street last year in order to mitigate traffic back-ups downtown during peak travel times during the week. Drivers should be prepared to exercise caution and patience when traveling anywhere during peak traffic hours. Leaving yourself a couple of extra minutes if you know you’ll be traveling through a busy intersection on the way to work can go a long way.
From the Kentville Town Council
UPGRADES ON THE HORIZON FOR CHESTER AVENUE The Town of Kentville will be upgrading Chester Avenue in the near future. The project consists of the renewal of approximately 1.4 km of sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and watermain, which will include retaining wall replacement and general paving. Other considerations will include sidewalk extensions, overhead crosswalk lights, bike lanes and a turning lane at the Chester Avenue/Main Street intersection.
This project is currently being designed with construction planned for 2016. The project will be funded equally by the Town of Kentville, Provincial, and Federal Governments. The total estimated project cost is $2,900,000.

Council decides to accept a staff recommendation to purchase 40 acres of land in the industrial park Several years ago, the Kings RDA commissioned a study regarding available commercial and industrial land in Kings County. The report highlighted a lack of sufficient available shovel ready industrial land in Kings County, and concluded that the industrial park in Kentville is the best option for future development to support this need.
The property in the AVRIP was originally managed by the Annapolis Valley Industrial Park Commission. It transitioned in the early 90’s when the commission was dissolved. The vacant parcels at that time were transferred to NSBI. Discussion has occurred at past and recent strategy sessions with Council.
The land is seen to be an asset to the Town, and would be an advantage to the regional economy should the town take ownership. Council voted at the July meeting to purchase the land and the process is underway.
