The 2018 SMCOE STEM Fair is undergoing a big transformation! For the first time, the SMCOE STEM Center will be hosting its annual STEM Fair event combined with a showcase of students’ work in the Visual and Performing Arts. STEM Fair project submissions are open for students in grades 5–12; the Art Expo will showcase and celebrate students’ creativity from grades K–12. Now is the time for students to start thinking about their projects — both STEM and art-related!

The San Mateo County Office of Education will be hosting a special Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Statewide Rollout called "Accelerating Into NGSS" at Skyline College. Accelerating Into NGSS will combine elements from previous rollouts to enable teachers and districts to revisit key concepts and build greater capacity. Application Deadline: Monday, November 27
Calling all San Mateo County 4th–6th grade public school teachers: The 2017-2018 San Mateo County Math & Science Teacher Innovation Grant is currently open to a second round of applicants. All 4th–6th grade public school teachers may apply for funds that support adoption of Next Generation Science Standards and/or increase student aptitude in math. These funds support innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education.
Submissions will be accepted until Monday, November 27. Details and requirements can be found on the application form here. Applications may be submitted individually or in collaboration with other teachers; a list of awardees from the first round of 2017-2018 applicants can be viewed on this page.
Maximum funding is $2,500 per teacher or $5,000 for teachers applying in groups of two or more. Don't let this critical funding opportunity pass you by — apply now!

The second annual RISK (Reflective Innovation for Sustainability & Knowledge) Conference is focused on “Educators Collaborating to Save our Common Home.” The panel of dialogue leaders includes SMCOE Environmental Literacy Coordinator Andra Yeghoian.
Together, public and private school educators will respond to the existential threat of climate change. This professional learning opportunity will empower educators with knowledge and connections to a network of people in PreK–12 education, higher education, NASA Ames, nonprofits and industry who want to partner and design the solutions that our world needs. World Savvy SF
World Savvy has extended the registration deadline for the December 15 World Savvy Classrooms Program workshop for the 2017-2018 school year. If you are a classroom teacher interested in participating, please register here.
Project planning workshop: This workshop will give all teachers the opportunity to explore what the World Savvy project will look like in their classroom. Through small-group activities and feedback from other participants, all teachers will walk away with a concrete plan on how to implement the global competencies into their final student projects.

Climate Corps Fellow
The SMCOE STEM Center is pleased to introduce the newest member of our team, Madeline Willett. Madeline will be working with Environmental Literacy Coordinator Andra Yeghoian to implement the Environmental Literacy Initiative as a Climate Corps Fellow. Madeline has been a biologist in the environmental field for over three years in both the public and private sectors in California. She holds a B.S. in Aquatic Biology and has LEED Green Associate certification. She has experience in project coordination, task management, and enforcement of environmental permits and regulations.
Madeline sought to change her career trajectory and seek a position where her work produces more measurable changes. She is very excited for the opportunity to share her passion for sustainability and instill it at all levels of the education system.
