2017 Event Ambassador

The Mitsubishi Motors Australian International 3-Day Event has a long history of partnering with international eventing figures to bring more of the equestrian sport to the Adelaide crowds. For 2017, the event is pleased to announce that UK-based Australian eventer and Olympic Bronze medallist, Sam Griffiths, will be heading to Adelaide as Event Ambassador.

Sam was one of the Australian team members of the Bronze medal winning Olympic Eventing Team and finished fourth individually at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He has competed at 3-day events throughout the world with much success, and in 2014 on his Irish Sport Horse mare, Paulank Brockagh, won the UK’s CCI4* Badminton Horse Trials, and placed third at the Burghley Horse Trials on his horse, Happy Times. Sam has represented Australia on many occasions, including the World Equestrian Games and the 2012 London Olympics. Sam is now based in the UK .

Event Director, Gillian Rolton, said that Sam Griffiths will be a wonderful Event Ambassador for the Mitsubishi Motors Australian International 3 Day Event, having visited the Adelaide event previously.

“Sam has a wealth of knowledge on the sport of eventing and this is apparent in the successes that he has had on the international stage. The Masterclasses that he will present will no doubt be extremely interesting and informative, and I’m sure he will be able to provide great insight from a rider’s perspective in to the Mitsubishi CCI4* Cross Country Course in his course walks,” said Mrs Rolton.

Sam Griffiths said that he was excited to be attending the 2017 Mitsubishi Motors Australian International 3 Day Event as the Event Ambassador this year.

“While I have never ridden at Adelaide, it is always one of my favorite 3-day events to attend. There is no other 3-day event like this in the world and it’s great to see Australia and New Zealand’s best riders competing at this event. One day I hope that I can also compete and win the Adelaide event!” said Sam Griffiths.

Throughout the event, Sam will be conducting masterclasses with some of Australia's up and coming talent, providing guest commentary, as well as public cross country course walks and meet and greets. Take advantage of Sam's amazing knowledge and experience and don't miss out on seeing this eventing hero!

Discover South Australia!
South Australia is the nation’s best events state – a title we’ve won two years running – and this November the Mitsubishi Motors Australian International 3 Day Event will make its exciting return to Adelaide.

All the action takes place in the heart of the city and it’s just a short walk through the east parklands to an array of indulgent experiences: hot restaurants like Australian Restaurant of the Year Orana and Africola, Rundle Street boutiques and a redeveloped Riverbank precinct to discover. Get swept up in the atmosphere of the Adelaide Central Markets, a local foodie institution for more than 140 years and right in the centre of Adelaide. Curb that midday hunger at one of Adelaide’s eat streets, a melting pot of modern cuisine, international flavours, local favourites and alfresco dining. Indulge in Adelaide’s small bar scene by heading to hotspots at Peel Street, Leigh Street and Ebenezer Place or get a bird’s eye view at rooftop bar 2KW.

Adelaide was recently named a great wine capital of the world, joining peers like Bordeaux and the Napa Valley. With 200 cellar doors a short drive from the CBD and 18 world-renowned wine regions nearby, it’s no surprise why. Be sure to add a day or three on to your trip and venture outside the city to see stunning vistas and enjoy world-class wines. It’s all on your doorstep.

Interview with Christian Landolt - President of the Ground Jury

Q: What is your background and experience in the eventing world?

A: I started eventing a little by accident in Switzerland mainly because my riding club had a few eventing fans and they organised a trip to Badminton. From then on, I was hooked and vowed to ride there some day – which I was lucky to do! I have been competing for over 30 years and judging for 20.

Q: You are the President of the FEI Ground Jury for the Aus3de, what is the role of the Ground Jury?

A: The Ground Jury judges and oversees the whole competition, putting special emphasis on the horse welfare. It has the ultimate decision at any time. Of course, our main impact is on the dressage phase, however we do also:
- check the fitness and soundness of the horses at the two horse inspections with the veterinary delegate
- make sure the XC course is up to the standard, fair and safe, alongside with the course designer and technical delegate.
- check the SJ track and make sure it is relative to the level of competition and complements the XC. This again is done in collaboration with both the SJ and XC course designer as well as the technical delegate.

Q: You have officiated at Adelaide in previous years, what do you like about Adelaide? What do you think makes the Mitsubishi Motors Aus3de unique compared to the 4* events in the northern hemisphere?

A: I love coming to Adelaide as it is totally unique by its inner-city location with the beautiful jacarandas plus it is usually warm and sunny! I think the competitive yet relaxed Aussie attitude, added to the keen and enthusiastic crowd, makes it a very special event. There is also the added bonus to go visit pandas Funi and Wang Wang!!

Q: As well as your official duties, you also have extensive riding and competition experience. Which do you prefer to do?

A: I am lucky to still be actively and successfully competing in both eventing and dressage. I love both and my judging has helped my riding and understanding of training enormously. Still nothing beats the thrill of going across the country.

Q: What can spectators and riders expect for the 2017 Aus3de?

A: Beautifully trained and fit horses, who with their riders, will show a lot of courage and skills over world leading course designer Mike Etherington Smith's challenging course. There will no doubt be a lot of excitements, thrills and spills! Some yummy food and great shops too… a perfect day out, hopefully in the sun.
