‘Whitley Traffic Matters’ Petition
On Sunday, Roger attended the launch of the Whitley Traffic Petition. Shortly all Whitley residents should have someone knock on their door asking them to sign this petition. If this doesn’t happen or if you’d like to help with the petition then email us at cheylesmore.ward@gmail.com and we’ll pass on your details.

The petition states:
We, the undersigned, call upon Coventry City Council to address our worsening road safety problems, especially with a focus around the schools. To reduce speed, to make safe for pedestrians and cyclists and ensure access for emergency vehicles.
We ask that they introduce measures to include a 20 m.p.h. speed limit, additional school warning signs (possibly "vehicle-activated"), and pinch-points in the vicinity of the 3 schools (inc. the Abbey Rd/Avenue "rat run")
To introduce junction protection (double yellow lines) for example, Ashington Grove and Rutherglen Avenue, Ashington Grove and Abbey Road (top), The Avenue and Burnham Road etc. Also better lighting along the Ash-path(Abbey Road) between the schools.
We strongly urge the Council to work with local residents' representatives in consultation and to take into account our Traffic Management & Impact report which highlights issues and requests.

Car Sales on Benedictine Road - Update
Roger has had a lot of correspondence with respect to the resident selling & repairing cars from the front of his house in Benedictine Road.

Response received from Marcus Fothergill, Planning & Housing Enforcement Manager:
Dear Councillor Bailey,

Officers from the Planning and Street Enforcement Teams are aware of the unauthorised motor trade activities being undertaken in Benedictine Road and have recently written to the owners / occupiers of the properties concerned requiring the sale and repair of vehicles to cease. Officers will continue to monitor the situation and if the activities continue formal legal action will be undertaken.

Received from a resident on 8th February:
Hi Roger
Thank you so much. He has now moved into his garage, still noisy but can't see him anymore

Bins Not Emptied Behind the Shops on Quinton Park
In our 2nd October 2016 update we reported that bins were still not being emptied behind the shops on Quinton Park due access problems & wrong bins being used.
In our 23rd October 2016 update after a visit by Roger and officers a proposed solution was to replace the single property bins with community bins, thus saving space and reducing the confusion as to which bin to use.

This week a frustrated resident contacted Roger to say that 3 months on, nothing had changed & their bins were still not being emptied.

Response from a council officer;
Cllr Bailey,

Apologies that this is yet to be completed. We have made some progress however.

Since our visit officers have visited all of the businesses to ensure that they had suitable arrangements in place to deal with their waste and to advise them of their responsibilities. We also did some door knocking and delivered leaflets to all residences in an attempt to get people to use the recycling bins appropriately. I know it is frustrating for the people who are recycling correctly if the bins are not emptied because some residents contaminate them.

With regards to swapping the bins we are currently evaluating space requirements as we don’t want to cause further access issues with the larger bins. Once we have concluded this evaluation we will let you know our final plan before moving forward.

Received on 8th February from Layla Shannon, Senior Waste Management Officer:
Cllr Bailey,
My colleagues have visited Quinton Park and identified a suitable site for the larger bins to be stored.

As collections of both bins are due on Tuesday next week we will arrange for the exchange to take place following collection.

Fined for Feeding Swans at Quinton Pool
Local residents have raised fears about seeing the swans cross Quinton Park to get to the longer grass by the flats.

One resident was so concerned that he asked the advice of the RSPB. They suggested that the swans behaviour was due to a lack of food & that they could be fed grain and shredded lettuce to supplement their natural diet, whilst their food source was low. These actions resulted in the resident being given a £100 fine. Roger has been contacted by the resident and is looking into this matter.  Read more

Whitley Residents & Neighbourhood Watch Association (WR&NWA) Meeting
Chris Maguire, project manager from Farrans, spoke at the WR&NWA meeting. He explained:
  • Trying their best to minimise traffic by reusing material on site, like the crushed material from the demolished Alice Stevens.
  • Noise restrictions imposed: 8am – 6pm Monday to Friday & 8am – 1pm on Saturday. However contractors will be arriving before this time.
  • All subcontractors have been briefed on their route into the site. Unfortunately problems arise when subcontractors the subcontractor. Extra signage has been installed to help this situation.
  • Guaranteed that no asbestos could have got into the air in Whitley during demolition as very strict controls were in place.
  • Contractor vehicles parking irresponsibly will be dealt with.
The relationship that residents, Doug & Rod have with Chris Maguire is very beneficial to everyone. Ideally all issues & concerns should be sent to them.

Parking Problems on Glover Street
Dear Roger
I just thought I'd drop a line to inform you of a parking issue which occurred on Tuesday 31st January to support the proposed residents' parking scheme for Glover Street.

A non-resident parked inconsiderately in our road, quite a distance from the kerb, which prevented the dust-bin truck from getting through. This was compounded by another motorist (probably visiting the nearby shops) parking opposite, also blocking my neighbour's garage access. He returned and moved his car around twenty minutes later.

The refuse men attached stickers to both cars, but were 'stuck' there for almost an hour before deciding to reverse the truck back down the road. My neighbours were also prevented from accessing their driveways while the bin lorry was stationary.

If possible, I'd like this indecent to be cited as supporting evidence for Glover Street to join the residents' parking scheme.

Fenside/ Charminster Stream Clearance
In our 28th August 2016 update, we reported that Roger had contacted Whitefriars again for an update on the tidy-up work required at the Fenside/ Charminster stream.

He was assured that the work would be carried out when the weather got colder.

A concerned resident recently contacted Whitefriars to “remind them” of their promise.

The response that she received from Carl Williams at Whitefriars was that the work would be done in March.

Litter on Leaf Lane Removed
Roger contacted several people with respect to removing the litter from all along Leaf Lane

On 9th February Roger received this from Hazel Hill, local Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator:
Dear Roger
Very pleased to be able to tell you that the whole length of Leaf Lane looks brilliant and free of litter today. Not sure who I have to thank for it so have copied to all concerned.
Let's hope it can stay that way for a while. It must be mostly passing traffic as it appears to be mainly coffee cups and cans!

Another resident has just sent this – so mystery solved:
Hi Roger,
I met with Street services about the litter on Leaf Lane. On both sides of Leaf Lane, they said, there were large wheel plastic trims from the lorries that carry the Jaguar wheels. They came out and did another litter, fly tip pick on the bit along Fenside to Gregory Hood Road.
They are going to clean the footpath along the raised part of Leaf Lane and try and pick up the litter, when resources allow.
I have also raised the issue of bins left on the pavements along Gregory Hood Road, as now residents are dumping glass tables, cupboards and rubbish beside the bins when there is room for the bins in the allocated area by Whitefriars. This may encourage people to fly tip and add to the pile. Could someone speak to Whitefriars about this?

Cheylesmore Library Volunteers
Another resident has volunteered to help at the library but one of our originals feels that he’s too old to help – but we’re trying to persuade him to reconsider.

The cabinet meeting for deciding the future of the libraries & other services has been arranged for Monday, 6th March, 11am at the Council House.

If you are interested in volunteering then please email: cheylesmore.ward@gmail.com.
The more volunteers that we have then the longer the Library opening hours can be.

If you have any ideas about what you’d like to see at the library then please email us. It’s important that everyone takes ownership of this valuable local asset for the benefit of the local community.

Exciting New Plans for Charterhouse
The Historic Coventry Trust has been working closely with architects PCPT and BPN and landscape architects LUC to develop the overall plans for the buildings and landscape.

The aim is to tell the stories of the Charterhouse from its inception as a Carthusian Monastery, a place of silent worship, a Tudor home, market garden and provider of food to local dignitaries, and a Victorian home, until its last owner Col William Wyley, who bequeathed the house to the city. The ultimate aim of the project is to live up to the wishes of this bequest.

Hogs’ Rest Hedgehog Rescue - Winter Prickly News
From Lorna:
A busy winter ...197 hedgehogs are currently under the care of Hogs Rest (over 20 coming from the Cheylesmore area) and at over-winter carers, 70 are in hibernation, some have remained awake. 12 are currently being kept awake on heat-mats in the ICU Unit as I treat them for their various ailments.

Did You Know... In hibernation a hedgehog’s metabolic rate can be as low as 2% of the normal rate. Its heart rate will slow from 240 beats per min to just 5bpm. Takes one breath every few minutes. Its body temperature drops from 35 celcius to just 5....

Hedgehogs actually wake up periodically, every few weeks usually, and can move to a different hibernaculum (nest). It is believed that this boosts their immune system, but also drains their fat reserves.

Make your garden Hedgehog Friendly. As we approach towards Spring, very soon hedgehogs will be emerging from hibernation and will be hungry and mainly thirsty. Please put out food and Water Only, NOT MILK! Help them to find food and water in yours and neighbouring gardens. Make a highway, 5inch gap in your fence, that's all is needed.

If you see a hedgehog out in the day it needs your help. Please ACT QUICKLY.
For further advice, phone Lorna 07866 376 817.

The Hogs Rest is in the Allesley Park Community Centre - tel 7671 5150.
They are always in need of:
- dog & cat food in jelly (not fish based or in gravy - the salt content is too high),
- cat biscuits (not fish flavoured),
- newspapers
- bin liners

Puppy Walkers Required

From Coventry Police facebook page:
We’re still hunting for puppy walkers to take on our ‘Star Paws’ litter, and beyond…

Fully vetted puppy walkers are responsible for homing their puppy, caring for their needs and crucially, helping them to socialise with people and other dogs.

Anybody over 18 can apply to be a puppy walker, if they have the time to look after the puppy and provide plenty of play time to allow it to develop within a happy, carefree environment.

Puppy walkers need to live within the West Midlands or on the very outskirts.
