WHAT'S SPINNING @ SPOKE

KING LEAR and THE SECRET GARDEN:
Young Actors Take the Stage @ Spoke the Hub

Photos by Freestyle Rep & Erik Almeida
Mike Durkin and Laura Livingston (of Freestyle Repertory Theatre) put STH’s young thespians through their Shakespearean paces this past fall in order to share their streamlined version of KING LEAR. The Friday night, February 5th production starring Clementine Avery, Judith Calvo, Saoirse Gira, Brad Lyon and Iris Rosenfeld, was funny, accomplished and timely. The YOUNG ACTORS WORKSHOP invites newcomers to join them after school on Wednesdays to work on their next Spring production.

STH's new Saturday YOUNG ACTOR'S PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP under the direction of Kerry Kastin of BLOWOUT THEATER, also performed a delightful version of Frances Hodgson Burnett well-known classic, “The Secret Garden”. Starring Louise Amarel, Judith Calvo, Eden Golomb and Madaeline Lyon, actors played multiple roles convincingly and masterfully while they brought the story to life through shadow puppets and an original cardboard set that transformed itself into various settings, including a wall, the garden gate, a bedroom, and of course, the magic garden itself where the story unfolded.

Kudos to all of STH's young actors in both productions for delivering two polished and moving performances!

ATTENTION DANCERS, ACTORS, MUSICIANS & INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTISTS:

The LOCAL PRODUCE Festival of the Performing Arts WANTS YOU!

STH is still accepting proposals from professional performing and teaching artists of all genres for:

WORKSHOPS & PERFORMANCES
Performances and workshops can be held under our big top tent in front of the STH Re:Creation Center on Union Street in Park Slope, orsomewhere out on the street itself on Saturday June 3th, 2017.

SITE SPECIFIC MULTI-ARTS WORKSHOPS & PERFORMANCES
Think low- or no-tech outdoor, site specific performances and participatory, family friendly arts workshops, to be presented in several of Park Slope’s most luscious community gardens throughout the month of June 2017.  You choose your green space - or we will choose one for you -- and let us know what you would like to present.  Presentations should be approximately 10-60 minutes long and could be composed of a combination of things -  an informal performance followed by a participatory workshop, for example - or be part of a shared showcase of various artists' works.

COMPENSATION
Honorariums will be paid to all professional performers and teaching artists;  exact amount will depend on number of performers and length of presentation.

Please send or drop off a one page proposal of what you would like to create/present at LOCAL PRODUCE plus a video link of 3 representative recent work samples.

APPLICATION  or drop off:
Spoke the Hub, attn: Elise Long, 748 Union Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215

APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MARCH 6, 2017

Spoke the Hub’s LOCAL PRODUCE (mini) FESTIVAL of the PERFORMING ARTS, now in its 25th season, is a community-based, grass roots, cultural “green market” featuring the diversity, creativity and vitality of Brooklyn’s own performing artists-in-residence of all ages.

Did someone say DISCO-MANIA?

All men, women and children are invited to join Elise Long and STH in presenting another “flash mob” style disco “moment”at the Grand Prospect Ballroom on April 5th as part of the 5th Avenue BID’s annual “Taste of 5th” food-fest.

No previous dance or performance experience necessary, but professional dancers also very welcome!  Two rehearsals required the 2 weeks before the event. (If you saw last year’s DAVID BOWIE flash mob, you know what a big hit it was in the ballroom. This year’s disco "intro" will be simpler choreography and more of an invitation to all to get up and get down on the dance floor. We will need a big group, so bring all your dancing friends and your best Bee Gee mojo, then let’s get busy! Contact spoke@spokethehub.org to sign-up and for further details.
