Objections to Parking Restrictions in Asthill Grove & Orchard Crescent
In our 13th November 2016 update we detailed the proposal of the Installation of ‘No Parking on the Footway’ restriction along the full length of Humphrey Burton’s Road, Asthill Grove, Orchard Crescent and on Stoney Road from Humphrey Burton’s Road to the railway bridge, to prevent parked vehicles obstructing the footway.

Many residents contacted Roger stating that this would cause major problems in Asthill Grove & Orchard Crescent because the width of their roads could not support these restrictions.

Last week Roger attended the Cabinet meeting for City Services to discuss this. He put in an objection about Asthill Grove & Orchard Crescent being included in this new restriction, on behalf of residents. Other residents and the local residents association, STAR also put in their objections about these two roads.

Coventry City Council listened and amended the scheme so that only Stoney Road and Humphrey Burton Road will have the ‘No Parking on the Footway’ restriction installed.

Residents Parking Scheme
Roger is aware how frustrating it is waiting to hear news concerning adding Glover Street, Lichfield Road and Benedictine Road to the Cheylesmore Residents Parking scheme, because residents are contacting him on a weekly basis. It is sadly a slow process, especially regarding the legal side and the recent revision in January concerning such schemes has extended the process. There has clearly been an increase in parking on these streets. Roger has witnessed how bad the situation is in Glover Street.

He continues to put pressure on Coventry City Council to sort this out as soon as possible and is hopeful there will be further news shortly.

Urgent Call to Whitley Residents
Excerpts from Doug Lowe’s email:

TRAFFIC CHAOS & WORSE GUARANTEED!!!
The Whitley Abbey Primary School Nursery planning application, reference number:-
FUL/2017/0422, is to be considered VERY SOON and the current design completely ignores the essential provision of Drop-off/Pick-up points.

The main entrance to the nursery will be behind the bollards on the brow of the hill near the 'Ash-path' (Abbey Road). Parents of very young children will have no choice but to park on the hill leading down to the Academy.
Picture the scene, if you will.:
There is NO ROADSIDE PAVEMENT.
Option 1...Your child climbs out of the car to be faced by a steep, wooded embankment. Not ideal, I think you'd agree!
Option 2...Your child climbs out of the car into an oncoming flow of traffic. Not something that ever figured in your basic Road Safety training!

The Whitley Residents & Neighbourhood Watch Association is calling upon all parents and any other concerned Whitleyans to do either or both of the following :-
  • Make your protest official by OBJECTING to the current design here and INSISTING that it be amended to provide safe drop-off/pick-up points. Comments must be received by MONDAY, APRIL 3rd. at the LATEST
  • Attend the W.R.& N.W.A. extraordinary general meeting on:-    WEDNESDAY, MARCH 29th. in the COMMUNITY CENTRE, The Avenue, Whitley.   Lasting from 7-8pm. Dealing with only this item.
For more information read Doug’s full email.
A brochure detailing the nursery plans can be viewed here

Inconsiderate Parking in Glover Street
Roger is continually being contacted by residents of Glover Street about people parking too close to their property. One resident informed us that the driver had to stand on her wall to get into her car!!

To make matters worse the residents of Glover Street have now received letters from Waste Services saying that they can’t gain access to Glover Street to empty the bins due to the parked cars and have asked residents not to park there on a Tuesday when it’s collection day.

Roger has contacted Waste Services on behalf of the residents explaining that it’s not the residents causing this problem.

Broken Fence on Leaf Lane
Residents continue to contact Roger with respect to the damaged fence on Leaf Lane that was reported early last year.

Roger has now been advised that the repair work will take place next week, hopefully Thursday.

Bins Left Out on Quinton Park Again
Residents have informed Roger that some flat owners are again leaving their bins out.

Response from Simon Jones, Environmental Case Officer:
With regards to the above I will visit the area next week and inspect which bins have been left out and take the appropriate action. If a property has been warned previously then further enforcement action could be take.

Parking Petition for John Grace Street
Roger and the petition organiser have requested that the petition should be heard.

Response from Martin Wilkinson, Senior Officer - Traffic Management:
Further to your emails, I will inform Governance Services that you wish a Cabinet Member report to be heard in response to the above petition.

If you have additional information that you would like us to take into consideration when preparing the report, please forward it to me by post or email. You will both also have the opportunity to speak at the meeting at which the report is heard.

The parking survey referred to in the Determination Letter was conducted in May 2016 as part of the review of the existing Cheylesmore Residents’ Parking Scheme.

At the end of last year more double yellow lines were painted along Quarryfield Lane.
Possibly John Grace Street & St Christians have both been adversely affected by displaced vehicles from here.

New Tiverton School Update - Friday 24th March
From the "New Tiverton Delivery Team" for Coventry City Council which consists of Council Officers, the designers and also the builders:
Works to the foundations have been hampered by the wet weather.  They will be completed early next week with some additional concrete pours on Monday and Tuesday. Completion of the block work under build and under-slab drainage will also be early next week.  On Monday the floor slabs will begin to be installed. There will be a crane on site for the floor slabs to be unloaded and moved into place.
On Tuesday the builder’s site welfare cabins will be delivered and installed behind the site office house.
In summary, there will be some large deliveries next week, the site team will endeavour to keep any disruption on local roads to a minimum.
Thank you for your co-operation.

Leaf Lane Slip Road

From Hazel Hill, local resident & neighbourhood watch coordinator:
Dear Roger
Have just taken a walk up the slip road to Whitley Common. The stream has been cleared at long last (Thursday ) and looks absolutely wonderful as you can see from the photos. Just needs some steps down to the footpath which goes through to Park Paling. Have been told that kingfishers can be seen along there.
The grass on the common has also been cut and looks a picture. Just the part that is the subject of my petition to go.

Hazel continues to press officers to complete the work on the common that should have been done 2 years ago when the bridge was completed. Thanks Hazel.

Heritage Action Zone
Coventry has been chosen as one of the first 10 Heritage Action Zones.
This new project will use Coventry’s outstanding heritage as a catalyst to regenerate the city centre and will tackle issues around education, jobs, health and housing.
The Coventry Heritage Action Zone will improve the city centre by doing up shop fronts, encouraging a greater range of retail businesses and bringing back into use abandoned upper floors of historic buildings as accommodation. It will also provide educational opportunities through traditional building skills and crafts apprenticeships.
