Our popular Post Graduate Awards Luncheon will be held at Wharerata hosted by the GWM Charitable Trust Board

2017 marks 30 years since these awards were first distributed to post-graduate women students studying at Massey Manawatu's Campus.  This initiative recognised that most post-graduate students could not take on paid work over the summer as they were often engaged with their research project.

Over the three decades, approximately 240 women have been supported by this scholarship to a total of just on $1 million.

Please join us in celebrating this wonderful achievement.
RSVP: Rowena on rowena.bruce@clear.net.nz by 9 June.

March 2 Panel Discussion Women in STEM Careers

This was a very interesting, informative evening with lots of serious information and light-hearted banter shared. Thank you to Dr Nicola Schreurs, who is active in both Zonta Club of Manawatu and GWM, for chairing this panel so capably.

A number of senior secondary school students attended.  One teacher wrote:

It was an inspiring evening. It is not often that we and our students get to hear how successful STEM women got from secondary school to where they are now. Their stories were fascinating and inspiring.  The students are still buzzing and many of your panelists have agreed to be contacted and to come into speak to our students.

At this stage in their STEM careers, our students are often “at sea” and not sure of where they might study, where they might go and what they might do. Hearing from inspirational women who enjoy what they do, and who are positive about their fields and the opportunities gave them hope for their futures. For me, learning that many barriers have been broken, and that obstacles that used to be present for women in STEM have gone was reassuring as I encourage young women into these fields. The panelists and the MC were inspiring and thought provoking. The evening has lead to many discussions.

Thanks so much for organising this event and including our students and staff in your guest list.

March 11 Friendship Bridge Outing to Gretta's holiday home overlooking Foxton Estuary

Over 25 Massey post graduate internal students, their partners and children as well as GWM members enjoyed a really relaxed time, walking along the estuary and  taking in the scenery and bird life (yes, Godwits there getting ready to return to the Arctic Circle).   The food was amazing.  There are now 40 members of the Friendship Bridge FaceBook page and these women and their families really appreciate  our friendship and support.
Thank you very much Gretta for your relaxed hospitality in such a wonderful setting.

Gown Room News

We are now into the main capping season!
Our Academic Dress Hire staff Pauline, Yume, Peng and Maria have been very busy with cappings - firstly UCoL and  EIT, followed by Massey Albany, Manawatu and Wellington.  The Albany graduation is 26-28 April; Palmerston North 8-11 May; and Wellington 25-26 May.  As well as the graduation ceremonies in each centre, there are two celebrations held in each to honour Maori and Pasifika graduates.  At these ceremonies, the graduands often wear both their academic regalia and traditional cloaks. The UCoL and EIT include ceremonies on multiple campuses plus there are smaller tertiary institutions also hiring regalia for their graduation ceremonies.  Thank you to Pauline and your team for all your work to make this a happy celebratory occasion for all.

GWI delivers oral statement at the 34th session of the Human Rights Council
On 10 March, GWI Executive Director Stacy Dry Lara delivered Graduate Women International’s (GWI’s) oral statement at the 34th session of the Human Rights Council.  The statement highlighted the indispensable role of education in contributing to building a culture of peace. GWI emphasised that the human right to education enables many other rights; it enables girls and women to develop the necessary skills and competencies needed for peacebuilding efforts. GWI made numerous recommendations in its statement. In particular, GWI urged all stakeholders to promote and facilitate equal opportunities for women in leadership, peacekeeping and decision making.  The statement is available to view from this link: http://www.graduatewomen.org/gwi-delivers-oral-statement-at-the-34th-session-of-the-human-rights-council/

GWI Manifesto on Education for All is accepted to OHCHR study
What began as a panel discussion in June 2015 at the 29th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) became HRC resolution 32/20 on Realizing the equal enjoyment of the right to education by every girl in June 2016. This means that the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) shall prepare a report on the realization of the equal enjoyment of the right to education by every girl to be submitted for the consideration of the Human Rights Council at its thirty-fifth session in June 2017.
To this end, the OHCHR is gathering information from United Nations Member States, the United Nations Children’s Fund, other relevant United Nations bodies and agencies, relevant special procedure mandate holders, regional organizations and human rights bodies, national human rights institutions, and civil society, including children themselves. GWI has an ongoing relationship with the OHCHR and recently, with the help of Geneva UN Representative Nina Joyce, GWI submitted its Education for All manifesto for consideration in the study and it has been placed on the OHCHR website. Guidance for Developing Gender-Responsive Education Sector Plans
The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and the UN Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI) have launched a set of guidelines on how to improve education and learning in line with Sustainability Development Goals 4 and 5. These guidelines identify tools, resources and information to support planners and practitioners in systematically undertaking gender analysis and developing gender-responsive strategies during the Education Sector Planning Process. To support gender equality in education we need to transform the way education systems function, and put in place gender-sensitive policies, plans and learning environments. GWI advocates for gender equality in education to provide equal opportunities for all. To learn more, visit UNGEI’s resource centre.
