Leaf Lane Fence Repaired
After months of chasing by a local resident, with support from Roger, the fence on Leaf Lane has been repaired.

Residents Parking Scheme
Many months ago Roger submitted petitions from Glover Street, Lichfield Road and Benedictine Road where residents asked to be included in the Residents’ Parking Scheme because the displaced vehicles were causes many issues in their roads.

Roger raised this question with Caron Archer, Senior Engineer Traffic Management:
The review printed in March 2016, indicated that the three streets already mentioned wanted to be included, with figures over 80% for all three. I just wondered, might it be possible to use this response as an indication that residents wanted to join?

Response from Caron Archer:
I have placed an extract of the report you refer to below, in the table it shows (in 2016) that the response rate from Glover Street was 48% (more than double the 2014 response rate) and of these responses 82% wanted to be included in the scheme, there is a note below the table which indicates this is ‘evidence to justify consulting with the residents on the introduction of a residents parking scheme’. However the criteria for a scheme is 60% of the properties in favour; none of the streets achieved a response rate of 60%, so whilst it is a good indication, we need greater support to take a scheme forward.

Questionnaires for Glover Street, Lichfield Road and Benedictine Road
Roger has been informed that households in Glover Street, Lichfield Road and Benedictine Road have received their questionnaires asking if they would like to be included in the Cheylesmore Residents Parking scheme.

The scheme will only be implemented in a road if 60% of the household return their questionnaire stating that they agree.

Please note:
  • A pre-printed envelope has been included with the survey
  • This is a Business Reply Envelope
  • Only if this envelope is used will it be free to return your questionnaire
Yellow lines for Lichfield/ Glover and Benedictine/ The Hiron
Roger continues to ask when the yellow lines will be painted for both Lichfield/ Glover and Benedictine/ The Hiron.

Response from Caron Archer, Senior Engineer Traffic Management:
We will be sealing the order shortly; the 7 day call in period following consideration of the objections should end today, 27th March. We then have to undertake the remaining part of the process to seal the order and advertise an operational date which will be around 17th April. We will be issuing the instructions to the depot for the lining, and as soon as they confirm when they can undertake the works I will send you an update.

Whitley Residents EGM
Last week 18 people, including Roger, attended the EGM to discuss the Whitley Abbey Primary School Nursery planning application. Everyone agreed that this application was greatly lacking in that there was no provision of Drop-off/ Pick-up points.
Local residents wondered when the traffic survey had been done as currently the area is always grid-locked at school start & end times.
This the planning application:- FUL/2017/0422 and place where objections can be recorded.

Begging at Daventry Road Shops
Message from Police Sergeant Antony Ashton 1290:
A number of complaints have been received regarding a male and female begging at various locations outside shops and banks along Daventry Road. We have now identified the pair concerned, one male in a high-viz top and a female on crutches, the begging is reportedly taking place daily. I wish to reassure the Community we have now identified exactly their identities and can confirm they are working/ associating together. Both have been advised to cease this activity forthwith and I request the following support from the local Community if you encounter either of them.

Please do not give any money if requested to do so, the reason that this location is being targeted is because of the amount of money they are raising on a daily basis from generous people who believe they are doing the right thing.

Please report any sightings or encounters to me directly via email to
binleyandwillenhall@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk in order I can escalate my response to dealing with the matter if necessary.

Blondvil Street Sign
Roger was contacted by a resident who stated that Blondvil Street (Ulverscroft Road end) needed a new sign as the old one had been hit by a car.

The request has been logged with the Highways Inspector

Hillfray Drive Parking Restrictions
In our 10th January 2016 update, we detailed the actions to be taken following the Cabinet Meeting where Roger submitted the petition from the residents requesting action to be taken to guarantee that their refuse was always collected.

One of the recommendations from Cabinet had been to consider the placement of double yellow lines in a limited and specific way to prevent vehicles parking in the problem areas which should have taken place last year.

After much chasing Roger received this response from Martin Wilkinson, Senior Officer - Traffic Management:
Hill Fray Drive has been added to the Waiting Restriction Request List and double yellow lines at the junction with Ashington Grove will be advertised as part of the next review, which is due to take place in April or May. These waiting restrictions will be subject to the usual legal process for Traffic Regulation Orders, including a 21-day objection period. If the restrictions are implemented, any further measures could only be considered once the double yellow lines have had time to take effect.

Cheylesmore Library Volunteers
The next volunteers meeting is on Monday 3rd April at Cheylesmore Community Centre. We will be looking at the 113 logos designed by Howes Primary School & deciding which we would like to adopt as our logo.

If you are interested in volunteering then please email: cheylesmore.ward@gmail.com.
The more volunteers that we have then the longer the Library opening hours can be.

If you have any ideas about what you’d like to see at the library then please email us. It’s important that everyone takes ownership of this valuable local asset for the benefit of the local community.

Fenside/ Charminster Stream Clearance
In our 12th February update it was stated that the clearance would take place in March. Roger was again contacted by the concerned resident who stated that nothing had been done. Upon chasing Roger received a response from Harvey Speed, Drainage & Flood Risk Engineer. Here is an excerpt:
I have been out to inspect the watercourses and observed that some litter picking is required on both the Council’s park land (between Charminster Drive and Dawlish Drive) and also on Whitefriars’ land (between Charminster Drive and Stonebridge Highway). I also note that some clearance of vegetation is required by the culvert inlet which passes under Stonebridge Highway.

I will arrange for our Parks team to clear the woodland and watercourse of any litter. We do not propose to clear any natural vegetation from the watercourse in the woodland at this stage, as doing so will increase flows further downstream towards the houses at Fenside Avenue, therefore increasing the risk of flooding. The woodland ponds help to slow flows and provide water quality benefits.

I will arrange for the culvert inlet under the A45 to be cleared to ensure the watercourse does not back-up here and overtop towards the properties.

Barclays Cheylesmore Branch to Close
Roger received this from Paula Knowles, Deputy Community Banking Director:
On Friday 30th June 2017, we will be closing our branch in Cheylesmore, Coventry. Our records show a falling level of transactions at the branch with a 10% in the last year alone. On average more than 61% of our customers are already using other branches, and this figure is even higher for our business customers.

This closure means our nearest branch will be at High Street, Coventry approximately one mile away. Everyday transactions, typically carried out over branch counters (including paying in a cheque or depositing cash), can also be completed at the Post Office located 201 Daventry Road.

In terms of what the change means in practical terms, customers that currently use the branch will not need to take any action as all account details, sort code, account number, direct debits will remain the same. If a customer is registered for Barclays Mobile Banking, Online Banking and Telephone Banking they are also exactly the same, and customers can carry on using existing cards, PIN and chequebooks as normal.

Letters to customers regarding this matter will be arriving with customers from Friday 31st March 2017

Upcoming Works or Road Closures in our Area
London Road (near jct Deasy Rd), 2nd April - Lane Closure. Reason New cable install for University supply by Western Power Distribution

People's Lottery Scam
A thoughtful resident sent us this:
I have today received a letter purportedly from The People's Lottery stating that I had been randomly selected from the Electoral Roll and had won £350,000.
It is obviously a scam so I have forwarded it to Scamnesty at Trading Standards by free post CV681.
The letter has an address in Oxford St, London and asks for personal details.
You may wish to warn readers in case there are more "lucky" winners in our area.
