From the Chapter President

From national membership survey data one of the key activities expected of the Institute is to promote the value of Architecture and good design.

Not a surprising expectation, but I think they are two different things.

The value of good design is about better outcomes through successful design. Some outcomes can be empirically quantified and some can remain less defined but should still be understood and valued. Health and workplace are two fields where improved design solutions can be validated by data which supports improved patient recovery and improved culture and productivity. Sustainability outcomes can be measured and assessed. We know this data exists and yet being able to communicate it simply and broadly seems to evade us. I think there is a role for the Institute here.

The other value of good design is less tangible. It is about beauty, and delight and the things that engage and uplift, foster and support the human spirit. Our awards programme speaks to some of these elements and we must find better ways of communicating this value more broadly. The human spirit exists also in correctional services, aged care facilities and the small business on an arterial road, and while these seldom make for awards entries, we must still champion the contribution of good design there.

However architecture is a large and complex profession and we are not simply design consultants.

Promoting the value of architecture is about promoting the many other things we do as well, and perhaps being less willing to hand them away...

Working with D&C contracts for STEM Projects
5-6:30 pm Wed 5 April
100 Flinder St

Further to our recent emails, ACA and the Australian Institute of Architects have organised a session with Grant Mitchell of Minter Ellison to discuss the proposed AS4300 Design and Construct contracts which we understand will be implemented for most of the STEM works projects in South Australia.
For our members not familiar with being novated to a builder or seeking to understand these contracts better, this session will provide a professional legal overview of the potential contract risks, matters where you may need to request more information and items where you may need to check your liabilities or insurances or seek your own contract advice before signing the novation deed.
The session is free and open to all architects working on STEM projects

This year’s City of Adelaide Prize nominees once again showcase design outcomes that celebrate positive experiences and activation of places within Adelaide.

The projects vary in scale and medium yet all demonstrate innovation and creativity in design.

Presented by the Adelaide City Council since 1997, the prize recognises projects that enliven the city, engage with the community and make it a great place to live, work and play.

The prize is proudly presented in partnership with the Australian Institute of Architects, and supported by AILA, PIA and Guildhouse.

Vote for your favourite project from this year’s nominations and you could win a copy of The Pool; Architecture, Culture and Identity in Australia.

Position Vacant

Totalspace Design is a small architecture and interior design company located at the western end of Waymouth Street.
We need to expand our team with an architect who has at least 5 years experience and has the ability to take small projects on independently as well as working with others on larger projects. All our staff are involved in all aspects of projects, so the successful applicant will need to have contract administration experience as well as design and documentation skills in AutoCAD.
We are currently working on three STEM projects, and a number of secure facility projects, in addition to some commercial and residential projects.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to be heavily involved in all aspects of these projects.
Our office supports a good work life balance with flexible working hours that can fit around a young family. All our senior staff have juggled family and work for many years and understand the pressures of doing so. If you are the right person, we would be happy to look at a work regime that fits around you and your family’s lifestyle, with the potential for a shorter working week being open for negotiation.
It’s also important that you love dogs, as we have an office hound who expects attention from all our staff.
If you wish to discuss this opportunity please contact Sarah on 0418891815 or Mary on 0421456126, and send your resume to spaddick@totalspacedesign.com.au
We are looking for someone to start immediately, so if you are interested please get in touch straight away.
