Welcome to the first update on the Opportunity Area Programme for the North Yorkshire Coast.

We will use these emails to update you on the latest work across Scarborough, Whitby and Filey and to say more about how you can get involved. This edition includes information on next week's Phonics Roadshow, as well as investment in careers and enterprise support. There is a lot more to come. 

We will also share news on what others are doing to support young people to get on. To get us started, there's the PCSO who set up a local boxing club in Whitby for young people, the award-winning Scarborough University Technical College building and how the Totally Socially long weekend will use the power of communities to change things.

 

Over the last few weeks we've been out speaking to lots of you about the programme and where we are now the general election is over. We've spoken to the Tourism Advisory Board, the Esk Valley Teaching Alliance, the leadership team of North Yorkshire County Council's Children and Young People Service and the Heads and Principles of Secondary Schools and Post 16 Colleges. Throughout this, we've been discussing good work to build on as well as where the programme goes next, focussing on opportunities through partnerships.
  

Our next task is to set up the Partnership Board and the groups working alongside it. We will also be announcing the Chair of the Board very shortly. More on this next time.

Exciting events and opportunities for collaboration are being created through the Opportunity Area Programme

Funding Update

 

The Careers & Enterprise Company has allocated £1 million to the first six Opportunity Areas, including the North Yorkshire Coast, to invest in high quality careers and enterprise activities within secondary schools and post 16 colleges. This funding aims to ensure that young people have multiple opportunities to learn from employers through the course of their education.

 

All eligible schools have been approached by Andrew Davies, the Enterprise and Employability Co-ordinator. He can be contacted here for more information.

National News
The Social Mobility Foundation and the Social Mobility Commission, in partnership with the City of London Corporation, launched the Social Mobility Index. The Index identified the Top 50 UK employers who have taken the most action to improve social mobility in the workplace. Justine Greening spoke at the launch of the index.
The Social Mobility Commission launched an assessment of government policies over the last 20 years to increase social mobility in Britain. The report found that government policies to improve social mobility have failed to deliver enough progress and calls on the current and future governments to learn lessons from these mistakes and successes.
