Mikhail Lermontov TRIP IS FULL!

24th, 25th and 26th of September
The MS Mikhail Lermontov rests where she sank, lying on her starboard side.  One of the biggest dive-able ship wrecks in the world and one of the best. The dives can be as challenging as you want to make them, ranging from easy 12 to 18m dives around the wreck, to decompression dives to depths of 36m. It is possible to swim inside the ship with the correct training.  Penetration while remaining in sight of the light requires a Wreck Specialty course and anything further inside requires Advanced Wreck training.

Rena/Tiaoma/Aldermans

18th, 19th and 20th of February
Off the coast of Mt Mauganui lies the wrecks of the Rena and the Tiaoma.  At first an environmental tragedy, the Rena wreck was accidentally run aground on the Astrolabe Reef in October 2011. This trip we aim to dive the two reefs and also some of the prime dives sites at Mayor Island and the Alderman Islands. There will be something for everyone.
Other Dive Trips coming up...
  • Deep diving Taupo
  • Poor Knights
  • Truk (Chuuk) Lagoon - Nov/Dec 2017

"There's nothing wrong with enjoying looking at the surface of the ocean itself, except that when you finally see what goes on underwater you realise that you've been missing the whole point of the ocean." - Dave Barry

Max's Column

Max is our Dive Crew's resident spy, always on the lookout for any oops moments you might have.  Check out what he has spotted this month..
  • Huge welcome to Bette Fances Love, born 1st July 2016, daughter of Megan and George. Weight at birth 7.3 lbs/3.3 kgs. All three are thriving.
  • Wendy and Tony are now proud grandparents.
  • Yvonne reached the magic age. Congratulations.
  • Great to catch up with Duncan Moonlight and family, yes another Moonlight has been created.
  • Also Steve Clark popped in for a chat and coffee. Some of you may remember Steve as an Instructor with NZSA at Kilbirnie.
  • Darren and Emma are now NZ Residents. Congratulations to you both.
  • Claudia disappeared overseas for a while to California )that’s work?). Back in time for the Lermontov.
  • Peter spotted a spotted black grouper in Island Bay during an after-work dive.
  • Rachel and her partner dived Vanuatu reefs and the President Coolidge....
  • .....Great to have Egan in to sing on an Open Water Diver course.
  • Tony, Kevin & Chris got back from Vanuatu where water temperature was 26 degrees C.
  • Tony bravely (in his drysuit and plenty of undergarments) dived in Wellington’s 9 degrees C.
  • In Vanuatu one of Kevins sensor wires snapped.
  • We immediately set up and operating theatre in the resort workshop and our surgeon Chris began a delicate operation.
  • Once gowns, masks, lights, gloves, operating table, assistants and soldering iron were in place the procedure began.
  • Kevin held the wires, passed instruments to the surgeon and mopped Chris’s brow,
  • Tony rested  in the observation bleaches - a nearby Wrangler front seat.
  • The operation was a complete success, the patient recovered and went diving!
  • We stayed at the ‘Deco Stop’. The staff are among the most helpful and friendly I have found. Wonderful place to stay.
  • Wayne continues with his KISS Classic CCR.
  • He and Tony went surfing one Saturday – exciting.
  • Was that Tony assisting Peter  and Max on a Rescue course, bobbing around like a genuine victim??
  • Matt had done a wonderful job on Saturday.
  • Is it true? Darren & Emma are going hard-core sidemount?
  • The Mikhail Lermontov trip is full and all divers ready to rumble. Three days fantastic diving to look forward to.
  • Rather than just mutter about diving the Rena, we have booked a three day trip to dive that wreck and other fantastic locations. Details in the body of this newsletter.
  • Fancy more adventure? Join us in Truk Lagoon Nov/Dec next year.
  • The bravery of some wet-suit divers imagining the warmth while doing their Open Water Diver & Rescue training was astounding.....
  • ......Great efforts by Kim, Corey, Judith, James and Max during August.
  • Strangely enough there has been quite of rise in interest in drysuits. You can dive them all year round.
  • Did you know the water temp early August was 9 degrees C. Now it is up to 12 degrees C. Summer is on the way.
  • Happy Birthday to: Angus, Moritz, Zac, Aaron, Amber, Amelia, Jared, Sarah, Andrew, Caitlin, William, Joe, Kimberly, Duncan, Campbell, Kyleen, Yvonne, Daniel, Nick, Brenda and Alastair.
