How to use a digital central heating programmer
|
|
Decent central heating controls will help you heat your home more efficiently and lead to lower energy bills. It’s well worth learning how to use them all. You normally have three main controls:
- Programmer or timer – use this to schedule your heating on and off times.
- Room thermostat – use this to set the temperature of your home; around 18-21 degrees centigrade.
- Radiator thermostats – use these to control the temperature of rooms.

“Those bills ... they’re all gobbledygook!”
|
|
|
Confused, confounded, perplexed? Understanding your energy bills are an all too familiar problem we encounter here at CSE. That’s why we’ve created a simple guide to help you get to grips with all the jargon.
There are three things to check your bills for:
- That you’re being billed for the right amount.
- That you’re not building up any debt.
- If there’s a cheaper tariff you can move to (your bill will show this).

Can you manage at home in a power cut?
|
|
|
If you're at risk from a powercut - e.g. if you're elderly, dependent on a stair lift or medical equipment that needs electricity - then you should sign up to the Priority Services Register (PSR). This gives you
- Advanced notice of planned interruptions to your electricity supply.
- Advice on how to be prepared for a power cut, what to do if one happens and, if necessary, a cold weather crisis pack.
- A direct number to call to get straight through to the network operator in the event of an unplanned power cut.
- Special help, if needed, from the British Red Cross.
We're working with Western Power Distribution (they're the people who run the electricity network in the Midlands, South Wales and the South West) to sign people up to their PSR.
If you live in their area, and any of these below apply to you, you can sign up on the form below.
- You receive a state pension.
- You rely on electricity for medical reasons or for mobility equipment.
- You have a hearing or visual impairment.
- You have a disability or long term health condition.
